hey aldo what do you think of the new Envy ? They never disappoint, do they.

First opinion of Envy is always that they are as incredible as something that is incredible. They normally tail down to just awesome by play 3 or 4 but I haven't got there yet. Otherwise business as usual, one of my favourite bands. Wish more people loved them.

Envy are a Japanese band that started on the periphery of scream but have emerged into this post-rock-hardcore behemoth of overwhelming scope - listening to the split with Thursday and Abyssal, for instance, you'd scarcely believe they were the same band.

They may well also be in the top 5 loudest bands I've ever seen, and that list includes Swans touring Children Of God.

There's a new Triptykon EP coming out 10/25. It includes two new studio tracks, an alternate recording of "Crucifixus" and live versions of Celtic Frost's "Circle of the Tyrants" and "Dethroned Emperor," with Darkthrone's Nocturno Culto on lead vocals. So yeah, you need it. And they're touring the US with Yakuza!

There's a new Envy? Sweet, must check that out. They were great when I saw 'em at ATP a couple of years ago. They don't tour outside of Japan very often, do they?

The Dawnbringer is great. I talked about it a week or so ago on Twitter based on a download (from the label; if it's leaked, I don't know about it). Very NWOBHM but with a LOT of other good stuff thrown in, not purist retro-ism at all. If you like Iron Maiden circa 1981, you'll love it; if you like Pharaoh (modern-day Midwestern power metal), you'll love it, too. Just a really, really solid metal album.

This album cover raises many questions. Primarily, why does the werewolf have a scythe? Doesn't that defeat the point of being a werewolf? Also, why is it riding a horse? Don't werewolves eat horses? It's kind of one of the things they do. Many mysterious mysteries.

My guess would be that the chap's not a lycanthrope but a horse riding demon with a wolf's head, who's come about the reaping.

PMSB: The level of vitriol that's been directed at me on various RnB/hip hop threads over there is unreal. And ironically all by dudes who DIDN'T see PE or RUN DMC live in the 80s or buy 'Illmatic', '36 Chambers', 'Doggystyle', 'Straight Outta Compton' etc when they came out.

Yeah I was spinning metal vinyl last year and a bunch of kids came in begging for hip hop. I had a Street Jams comp on my iPhone and ended up laying down some Twilight 22 and Herbie Hancock for them. They looked baffled and asked for Kanye. None of them had ever even heard of Herbie Hancock. So I told them to fuck off and started playing Morbid Angel again.

I never find Rolling Metal hard to follow, except when I go away for a couple days and dudes write 713 messages about whether it's hard to follow or not.

Meanwhile, back in metal, I don't see a lot of shows any more, so I'm very excited to be seeing both Triptykon/1349/Yakuza and Dimmu Borgir/Enslaved/Blood Red Throne in the next two months. The new Enslaved is magnificent, and I thought the new Dimmu Borgir sounded pretty good on first listen.

Tarja's new solo album is at least OK, but I think Nightwish survived her departure in much better musical shape than she did. Not sure there's a great future in being the Pia Zadora of gothic metal.

New Tristania album just kinda left me puzzled. Not sure what they're going for any more. The Mortemia record is predictable, but at least it knows what it's about.

Also really liking this Russian funeral-doom band Ea, of whom I'd never heard before a couple hours ago. Au Ellai is the latest (3rd) album; I haven't heard the first two yet. Apparently the lyrics are in a "dead" language, whatever that means. Not that you would know if nobody told you.

Reiterate BUY rating on Iron Maiden, Mandrake, Sahg, Kvelertak and Valborg. Tentative BUY after one listen for the Amorphis recorded-old-stuff comp Magic & Mayhem.

Also, that squirrels-on-the-tower song is great.

Dead languages are a real thing. Some languages that are about to die are described as moribund. Dead = there are no living native speakers of that language. I'm not sure what language those songs are in, but it's a real thing. I mean, if anyone cares.

No, I understand what a dead language is, I'm just puzzled at how you could write lyrics in it but have it remain dead.

I mean, obviously you could just put together words whose translations have been lost, but then I don't think you're really "in" that language.

Latin is a dead language that is spoken (and sung) all the time, but there are no populations where that language is still spoken regularly.

listened to that neurosis live at roadburn thing. it's pretty good but there are no surprises. leans heavily on the last few albums (iirc, I think "the doorway" times of grace is the oldest thing they play) and everything is played pretty straight.

So what does everyone think of the new/old Soundgarden track/video?

The "new" Soundgarden song is okay. Don't much care for the video, just 'cause it has nothing to do with Soundgarden; it might as well be a fan-made YouTube thing where the song is synched to anime footage. I'm actually thinking I might buy the 2CD/1DVD version of this compilation, as it's a very well-chosen selection of songs.

Listening to the new Opeth 3CD live thing now. I haven't listened to Blackwater Park in a while, and hearing it performed live is reminding me why. There are some really nice passages, but some real draggy parts, too, and the songs don't stick in my head at all - they're pretty much the opposite of catchy. It's more like, "Wow, that's a cool riff" while it's happening, but then as soon as it's over, it's gone.

Ha ha ha! I love the Cathedral album but I can sort of see why people have a problem with the vocals... my friend compared him to your drunk Scottish uncle at a wedding getting everyone to shut up so he could do a turn...

It more reminds me of something off a slightly psychedelic, weird British horror film from the late 60s or a film starring David McCallum or Leonard Nimoy or something.

I guess that's one reason why I really like them though... they're very English without being like Skrewdriver, Blur or Chas and Dave.

Top 5 of 2010 so far: Ludicra, Cathedral, Enslaved, Wolvserpent, Agalloch.

Great year for brave and progressive metal.

only heard a couple tracks from the Cathedral. Sounded odd and good. Vocals reminded me of something Canterbury or krautrock, maybe? It was something very specific and I couldn't place it: Gong? Guru Guru?

SO who has thoughts on the Blind Guardian? Haven't really loved anything past Somewhere Far Beyond, but that poem was glorious and I'd give the thing a shot if more people dug it.

And really, any other modern power metal that's interesting would be nice to hear. The more NWoBHM/Manillia Road/Cirith Ungol sounding stuff is what I'm looking for, although I like lol Lost Horizon and the first Avantasia, so I'm not completely averse to that Euro sounding stuff. Love Hammers of Misfortune, too.

Power-metalwise, I think Gamma Ray are my only 2010 endorsement, but I there's a DragonForce live album, so that's like extended eligibility for whatever's on it...

Going to order that Realmbuilder album tomorrow. That looks like my kinda thing. Dawnbringer, too.

I have one Gamma Ray somewhere, a space themed one. Don't recall be all that into it, maybe it'll click for me some day.
