Christine. Her material is always underrated on ILM in all the pre-poll results banter but usually finishes at/near the top.

i mean, i just wanna spread it around a little, so i voted for bob welch, because FUTURE GAMES is a really important song to remember here. i could have easily voted for peter green, mick fleetwood, christine mcvie, lindsey buckingham, or stevie nicks, though.

my brain says lindsey, my heart says stevie, my gut says the two guys who the band is named for. i think the rhythm section elevated this weird collective of smart singer-songwriters into something much more than a weird collective of smart singer-songwriters.

Mick and John really do deserve some credit for keeping the thing going. Seems like there were a few different periods where they could have hung it up, but they didn't.

If this poll had a right answer the band would be way less interesting.

Well, Welch was in charge for my favorite album of theirs (M2M) and Kirwan was in charge for my second favorite (BT). Probably have to go with Kirwan, as he seems kind of crucial in helping them bridge the gap from blues to...other stuff.

And "Dust" is possibly the single best song they ever did...

Funnily enough, over the weekend "Oh Well" was on TOTP2, and you can see it's Danny Kirwain taking the majority of the solos on Part1 as well!

Her presence would have forced the excision of several blah Buckingham and Nicks songs.

I bet Say You Will is one of those albums where everyone says "oh there's filler" but everyone means different songs.

well I love Stevie's songs in FM, but don't have time for her solo stuff...and Peter Green is a great guitar player, but I never liked Then Play On...fuck it, I'm voting John McVie.

I'm expecting John to get short-changed here. There seems to be no particular reason to pick him. You dig the r&b roots rhythm section? Vote for Mick, he's a bit more showy. Enjoy the melodic, driving chug? Vote for Lindsey's rhythm playing. Intrigued by the emotional turmoil? Go for any of the others. Want to pay tribute to the early days? Got to be Peter Green. Etc etc. John seems to be best at hiding baldness and having a red nose.

wow LB by a landslide! I voted for him, but am surprised. this poll is good, because FM were definitely a *band* comprised of separate personalities-- emphasizing one over another really does change the equation, and maybe says something about you in the process! like a facebook quiz!

Seriously, I think I like "Why did you do it" more than any other Fleetwood Mac track, including "Tusk"

Christine is the beating heart of the band, which is why I adore Tango in the Night and her contributions to it so much

Peter Green will always be my favorite (and even then, I think Danny Kirwan may even edge him out as their best guitarist). Lindsey Buckingham is also close behind (and IMHO, he's also had the best solo career of any member by a good margin).

But Christine is amazing. After they blew up commercially to gargantuan proportions, I think she and Buckingham probably wrote the best material, but she also wrote the best tunes after Peter Green left and before Buckingham & Nicks came on board - almost single-handedly, she made that stretch of time worth hearing. You can make a great LP out of the dozen best cuts she sung and wrote during those years. "Spare Me a Little...," "Remember Me," "Dissatisfied," "Did You Ever Love Me," "Why," "Heroes Are Hard to Find," "Come a Little Bit Closer," "Show Me a Smile," "The Way I Feel," etc.
