J3ff how does the new Filth compare, say, to Midian - or in my mind, the "last good COF album."
― Randolph Carter (Viceroy), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:52 (fifteen years ago)
there was a good cof? lol
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:53 (fifteen years ago)
cad, thats fine, its not gonna happen, i just resent being accused of "spamming" by jeff just because he doesn't like the subject.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:55 (fifteen years ago)
It's not as good as Midian, which is my personal favorite because it was the first thing of theirs I heard and because it's got the catchiest songs they've ever done. The new one hangs together nicely as an album, though, and if there aren't any obvious "singles," it at least feels like they've jarred themselves out of the rut they've been in for the past decade. I'd say it's comparable to Cruelty and the Beast -- beyond the fact that both are concept albums about evil women.

This bit of ILM is significantly more welcoming than most of the other genre threads, IMO.

It was boring to my ears but I can see how a few old men would enjoy it.
― Randolph Carter (Viceroy), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)
ilxor, those type of image "zings" that ruin the rest of ilm really should not be welcome here, seriously FUCK THAT SHIT
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 17:00 (fifteen years ago)
pfunk, since a board doesn't look likely, then the only thing you can do is start more metal polls to get more discussion on separate bands outside of this thread.
― Randolph Carter (Viceroy), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)
or you could, like, start threads about those bands
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)
I won't post image zings if we can stop talking about a new board and get back to metal. Deal?
― ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 17:03 (fifteen years ago)
I just wanna clarify - I was open to the idea of a metal-only zone 'cause it would keep me from getting lured into bullshit discussions with empty-headed zeroes about pop music. I'm just as happy to post here, and start a thread specifically for a new album if I feel it merits one. The structure of the rolling thread doesn't bother me.

just snagged the new Torche and Swans -- completely forgot that the Dawnbringer was coming out today
Torche record clocks in at 21:47. There's a sticker on plastic wrap that includes the quote: "'It's a bunch of radio rock bullshit.' - Rick Smith (Torche Drummer)" which I thought was pretty funny

i normally listen to pharaoh sanders all day on thanksgiving, but maybe day after thanksgiving will be annual agalloch day. i got the vinyl box set for my birthday (!!) so i am excited to listen to all of them all day as i avoid going outside/any area where there will be "shopping"

hey aldo what do you think of the new Envy ? They never disappoint, do they.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 20:03 (fifteen years ago)
First opinion of Envy is always that they are as incredible as something that is incredible. They normally tail down to just awesome by play 3 or 4 but I haven't got there yet. Otherwise business as usual, one of my favourite bands. Wish more people loved them.
― It would have been better with burger sauce (aldo), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 20:38 (fifteen years ago)
I thought they were an emo band or something? is this the same envy?
― original bgm, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 20:47 (fifteen years ago)
Envy are a Japanese band that started on the periphery of scream but have emerged into this post-rock-hardcore behemoth of overwhelming scope - listening to the split with Thursday and Abyssal, for instance, you'd scarcely believe they were the same band.
They may well also be in the top 5 loudest bands I've ever seen, and that list includes Swans touring Children Of God.
― It would have been better with burger sauce (aldo), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

There's a new Triptykon EP coming out 10/25. It includes two new studio tracks, an alternate recording of "Crucifixus" and live versions of Celtic Frost's "Circle of the Tyrants" and "Dethroned Emperor," with Darkthrone's Nocturno Culto on lead vocals. So yeah, you need it. And they're touring the US with Yakuza!

Now you're just rubbing it in. Have you had a chance to throw the Dawnbringer in the cd player (saw you tweeted it showed up today)? Still curious and probably buying it, but the more impressions the better.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 22:46 (fifteen years ago)
There's a new Envy? Sweet, must check that out. They were great when I saw 'em at ATP a couple of years ago. They don't tour outside of Japan very often, do they?
― wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 23:08 (fifteen years ago)
The Dawnbringer is great. I talked about it a week or so ago on Twitter based on a download (from the label; if it's leaked, I don't know about it). Very NWOBHM but with a LOT of other good stuff thrown in, not purist retro-ism at all. If you like Iron Maiden circa 1981, you'll love it; if you like Pharaoh (modern-day Midwestern power metal), you'll love it, too. Just a really, really solid metal album.

This album cover raises many questions. Primarily, why does the werewolf have a scythe? Doesn't that defeat the point of being a werewolf? Also, why is it riding a horse? Don't werewolves eat horses? It's kind of one of the things they do. Many mysterious mysteries.

My guess would be that the chap's not a lycanthrope but a horse riding demon with a wolf's head, who's come about the reaping.

PMSB: The level of vitriol that's been directed at me on various RnB/hip hop threads over there is unreal. And ironically all by dudes who DIDN'T see PE or RUN DMC live in the 80s or buy 'Illmatic', '36 Chambers', 'Doggystyle', 'Straight Outta Compton' etc when they came out.
I'm far too white for those white dudes.
I'm not sure what the equivalent is... I might start posting here entirely in the style of Manowar lyrics and being an utter cunt to anyone who doesn't own at least three Celtic Frost and Tank albums and see how that goes down.
Anyway that's enough congratulatory talk from me but, y'know, \m/
