polls are very much an ILE & ILM thing as you need a lot of people for them. A separate board would be all discussion led.

think u know where i stand

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:36 (fifteen years ago)

Whatever it is, I'm against it.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

well i wish more would post here rather than just lurk, why do you lurkers not post here?

Well I for one don't post much in general on ILX because I don't have the time - I waste enough already reading it without getting into actual discussions. Specifically I don't post on Rolling Metal because, like I said, I am something of a metal dilettante and I have only become an active listener in the last couple of years. I really have no idea about what is going on in the scene, what is being released etc - Rolling Metal/ILM is the only resource I use for metal, except for the rare occasions when the Wire has an article on it. If Rolling Metal says go listen to this band I do; if a band isn't mentioned on here, then I probably will never get to hear them - so no pressure guys!

When I have posted, everyone seems very friendly. The idea that someone would be intimidated by a message board does not compute for me.

ps no to the 3 month trial as well.

ears are wounds, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

count me as a "no" as well. sorry, dude.

original bgm, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

What about an I Love Satan board that just coincidently has a ton of metal threads on it? eh???

Randolph Carter (Viceroy), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

no need for a separate board imo. personally prefer Rolling Metal + bookmark to keeping track of a whole new board.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

i vote yes on an I Love Satan board, however.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

I vote no on I Love Satin. Got to draw the line somewhere.

So, back to the topic - anyone picking up new stuff today? I'm intrigued by the Opeth live DVD/CD set (though not sure if I want the cds or not) and Dawnbringer looks promising based on the one song I heard.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

gonna pick up the torche. know nothing of dawnbringer beyond mentions here--what kind of stuff is it?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

Ok, looks like nobody seems to be much into the idea. I think at least a trial run of an I Love Metal board is a good idea. I would post a lot in it, and I don't post much in this thread because like I said, you are all very nice and way more easygoing than others on this board -- the point is the lightning quick very deep discussion of things that don't even come out for months loses a lot of people who would otherwise love to chat about metal.

Randolph Carter (Viceroy), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

There is a Dawnbringer song you can stream at the Profound Lore site - I'm crap at descriptions. The song is called Swing Hard

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:30 (fifteen years ago)

do you all think a dedicated board would get more posters beyond the regulars on here since this thread is offputting to some for all the reasons previously discussed? Or would that be a bad thing everyone just likes the thread exactly as it is now with no noobs?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:33 (fifteen years ago)

Viceroy, just start a discussion here on whatever; there are always people talking across one another, like a group of friends at a dinner table. Often times, bringing something up that's been abandoned by critics upthread gets them to post impressions of living with the album for months and what's changed. Adrien does that pretty regularly (when he's not out touring the old country like he is now).

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:34 (fifteen years ago)

I vote no. Seems unnecessary. I'm always happy to discuss a record I've had for a few months when I'm not crazy busy like I have been recently.

New Cradle of Filth is actually quite good. Still has some Filth-as-usual, but they play around with enough unusual classical melodies to make it worthwhile.

sounds like Dream Theater (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:36 (fifteen years ago)

plenty of noobs come to this thread and it's not really that intimidating. besides which, it's not like the discussion is suffering for lack of new blood. this thread does a great job of being metal central. if an album/band/event merits further discussion, I, or anybody, can start a thread about that album/band/event. starting a new board just seems really pointless to me

aerosmith: live at gunpoint (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:37 (fifteen years ago)

pfunk that's bullshit man no one here ever said they wanted to exclude anyone.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

dont you find it annoying though that you need to wade through crap on stuff like dummy burger or cradle of filth just to find one post on an album (and its always a promo/new album) and the discussions moved on, then if you try to restart it, others just ignore it and talk about more new promos. This thread should be more than just for journos

xpS HAH

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

there are always people talking across one another, like a group of friends at a dinner table.

this is a perfect encapsulation of what's good about this thread

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:40 (fifteen years ago)

FYI: If you only find one post there wasn't a discussion at any point.

xpost

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:40 (fifteen years ago)

dude I don't know how thin-skinned a person has to be to find this thread intimidating but that person should also probably avoid perilous daily expeditions like going to the curb to get the newspaper - never know if somebody'll say something mean to you while you're out there.

Herman are you just gonna ignore the evidence that the things that bother you about this thread *don't bother many other people, if any*? you're here evangelizing for an imagined cause that's more "Herman's complaints about the metal thread"

aerosmith: live at gunpoint (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

sometimes you dont get a discussion as a bunch of promos come out and something might get ignored.
xps

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

smithy, iirc its not just me, viceroy has made complaints and mte and unperson also liked the idea of a board, so it's not just me.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:43 (fifteen years ago)

so then.....start the discussion! if ppl want to talk about it, they will.

i'm pretty sure i said this to you when we were arguing about polls or something but dude you can't *make* people do things.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

I was a noob back in 05/06 and just started reading the rolling thread and asking questions - I had dropped metal for about 15 years so was hopelessly lost. Aero, Adrien, Scott, Unperson and the everyone else answered my silly questions, gave me lists of things to check out and have been the most convivial guides to music I've ever met. As I said before, it's like a table of friends, and as more people show up we all make room. It's like we're the metal Olive Garden.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:45 (fifteen years ago)

Stop spamming the thread. As someone very intelligently pointed out up thread, the rap guys don't seem to have any difficulty starting new threads for every artist/song/individual beat that catches their fancy. If you don't want to read about Cradle of Filth, ignore those posts. It's pretty simple.

sounds like Dream Theater (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:47 (fifteen years ago)

spamming? ffs

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:49 (fifteen years ago)

you brought it up, we discussed it, there was a vote, ppl voted against a board, we're still discussing it--what else has to happen here?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:50 (fifteen years ago)

This thread is just fine for general metal discussion, and I've seen plenty of new threads on ILM about the "bigger" metal releases in any given year. No need for a separate board. I'm not a journalist, I buy shit on its release date on CD (lolz) or, in many cases, even later if I decide to wait for something to come in used -- and I'm not opposed to bringing up an album that's been out for a while to revive discussion. If anything, as someone mentioned above, it lets those who've had the album for longer give their more developed/informed opinions a second airing.

yeah "bigger"

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

J3ff how does the new Filth compare, say, to Midian - or in my mind, the "last good COF album."

there was a good cof? lol

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

cad, thats fine, its not gonna happen, i just resent being accused of "spamming" by jeff just because he doesn't like the subject.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

It's not as good as Midian, which is my personal favorite because it was the first thing of theirs I heard and because it's got the catchiest songs they've ever done. The new one hangs together nicely as an album, though, and if there aren't any obvious "singles," it at least feels like they've jarred themselves out of the rut they've been in for the past decade. I'd say it's comparable to Cruelty and the Beast -- beyond the fact that both are concept albums about evil women.

This bit of ILM is significantly more welcoming than most of the other genre threads, IMO.

It was boring to my ears but I can see how a few old men would enjoy it.

Randolph Carter (Viceroy), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

ilxor, those type of image "zings" that ruin the rest of ilm really should not be welcome here, seriously FUCK THAT SHIT

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 17:00 (fifteen years ago)

pfunk, since a board doesn't look likely, then the only thing you can do is start more metal polls to get more discussion on separate bands outside of this thread.

Randolph Carter (Viceroy), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

or you could, like, start threads about those bands

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

I won't post image zings if we can stop talking about a new board and get back to metal. Deal?

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 17:03 (fifteen years ago)

I just wanna clarify - I was open to the idea of a metal-only zone 'cause it would keep me from getting lured into bullshit discussions with empty-headed zeroes about pop music. I'm just as happy to post here, and start a thread specifically for a new album if I feel it merits one. The structure of the rolling thread doesn't bother me.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

bullshit discussions with empty-headed zeroes

can we pleeeeeeeeease make this the board descrip for all of ilx

p.m.s.b. (pre-mall smoke bomb) (zorn_bond.mp3), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

just snagged the new Torche and Swans -- completely forgot that the Dawnbringer was coming out today

Torche record clocks in at 21:47. There's a sticker on plastic wrap that includes the quote: "'It's a bunch of radio rock bullshit.' - Rick Smith (Torche Drummer)" which I thought was pretty funny
