EZ , as i said, this rolling thread could still remain on here. That wouldn't change, but a separate board for other stuff would be better I think. We're pretty much a community of our own anyway.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 03:34 (fifteen years ago)

I know - just think that the rolling threads let one band remind someone of another album and then the conversation goes there and then somewhere else, jumping, spinning, digressing and enlightening. If I could discover old stuff the same way and not have to read 40 six-post threads I'd love it.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 03:37 (fifteen years ago)

rolling threads just get so unwieldy and it would be nice to have all the info one one band on one thread, so it can be searched for future reference, like i said, most of us dont get promos. I think some ilxors are put off as this thread can be mostly music crits sometimes.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 03:42 (fifteen years ago)

Let me put it this way; If this were a rolling dr. who thread (not the one that actually exists, a hypothetical one) it would consist of long discussions about one off-characters, what else they did in British TV land -- how they played a similar character in an episode of Blake's 7 and then landed a part on a sitcom where it seemed like an odd fit. There'd be bitter divides over what to call the front bottom part of a Dalek (a grill, a skirt?), and what Terry Nation's real intentions were for the pepper-pot villains. There wouldn't just be talk of old episode plots, but detailed biographical discussion of the writer of the episode, what else he wrote during his career as a TV writer, his venomous relationship with Barry Letts and how he just reused all his plots later in underwhelming NA target paperbacks (and anyway stole them from Douglas Adams to begin with!). There wouldn't just be people talking about the cheesy old alien costumes, but discussion of the blokes in the costumes and how they were also key grips for the 12th-15th seasons and once also played one of the bionic tribesmen in "Four to Doomsday."

Now if you are someone who has seen some of the new series and maybe, just maybe, caught Genesis of the Daleks on dvd and want to talk about your new favorite show... does such an environment seem very inviting to you? Even if everyone is really awesome and polite, you still might feel kinda dumb and out of place - no?

Randolph Carter (Viceroy), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 04:25 (fifteen years ago)

Haha, great example and one that probably applies to me. I can only think of four, maybe five people that would care or discuss that much detail and tbh we don't do it here because there are other places on the internet for it. Good God, the Doctor Who thread that follows the series argues every year about what constitutes a SPOILER and what doesn't FFS!

As others have said, I think balkanizing ILM is a bad idea. There's lots of good advice of here for people that come looking and the only time I lose the place with it is if I'm away from a computer for > 1 week (although iPhone is now helping with that). Keep it the way it is, I come here a much for the people as anything else. And no, I probably wouldn't post that much to the Rolling Grindcore thread on the hypothetical board.

It would have been better with burger sauce (aldo), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 06:47 (fifteen years ago)

I'll go one step further - I Love Cooking. Seemed like a great idea at the time, now no discussion about cooking on the main board (food, yes, but it's not the same thing) and apart from the Rolling Cooking thread the place is a desert.

It would have been better with burger sauce (aldo), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 08:21 (fifteen years ago)

yeah this is a ridic idea and I really don't know why it's even being talked about, all the arguments for it appear to be largely based on devil's advocacy?

being a ringmaster's crul (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 08:43 (fifteen years ago)

not that I read them but I have visited the Hellride forums and they have sub-boards for every last nebulous genre of metal/heavy rock within their remit - surprise surprise it's chock full of aspie douchebags

being a ringmaster's crul (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 08:47 (fifteen years ago)

I'm just a lurker so my opinion probably counts for less, but I think it is a really bad idea to split off every genre into its own little board. Where do you stop for one thing? And as someone who is a bit of dilettante when it comes to sampling a broad spectrum of music, I can't understand why you would want to ghettoize music taste like that.

ears are wounds, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 10:03 (fifteen years ago)

I vote retain rolling metal thread, no need for further Balkanization of ILX.

Also- congrats Nate, looking forward to listening to the sampler!

Neil S, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 10:30 (fifteen years ago)

Just picked up the Neurosis - Live at Roadburn 2007 disc yesterday. Anyone heard this?

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 13:17 (fifteen years ago)

there are really two solutions here:

1) just post in rolling metal, we're REALLY nice and we don't care if you bring up something that was already discussed

2) if you don't want to post something in rolling metal for some reason, start a new ilm thread!

also rolling metal is really easy to navigate, no one really posts images and i expand and ctrl+f rolling metal all the time

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 13:24 (fifteen years ago)

I think keeping this rolling thread for new stuff and starting another one on ilm for older stuff is fine. but stating a new board strikes me as overly complicated and as a move that would discourage new folks from joining in, if anything.

but honestly, I often post on here about records that haven't come out over the last few years. sometimes discussion starts up, sometimes it doesn't. no big deal. I view this thread as a place for off-the-cuff discussion about metal records, not strictly 2010 ones.

original bgm, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 13:26 (fifteen years ago)

haven't heard the neurosis live disc. how is it?

xpost

original bgm, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 13:27 (fifteen years ago)

and the rolling metal thread really is filled with nice, non-judgmental people! everyone should feel free to bring up anything in the metal universe they please, imo.

original bgm, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 13:30 (fifteen years ago)

well i wish more would post here rather than just lurk, why do you lurkers not post here?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 14:01 (fifteen years ago)

haven't heard the neurosis live disc. how is it?

Not sure, I haven't had a chance to listen yet -- but I'll let you guys know.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 14:04 (fifteen years ago)

This bit of ILM is significantly more welcoming than most of the other genre threads, IMO.

Duran (Doran), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 14:05 (fifteen years ago)

Rolling Metal is pretty nice and awesome in general.

markers, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

Also, new Torche out today. Looking forward to it.

markers, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 14:51 (fifteen years ago)

argh there would still be a rolling metal thread here, the board would be for other stuff that doesn't get much discussion. 99% of posts here are about new albums/promos/leaks.
Viceroy already explained why some people don't join in here and its just the same old posters. He feels a board would welcome non-diehard posters other than just the usual suspects.
Why cant we just trial it until the end of the year see how it goes?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

as a lurker, i can't guarantee i'd take part on a full board, either, but i would kind of welcome some smaller discussions of specific artists/styles/eras/albums/whatever. i love this thread, but it does tend to follow a promo/leak schedule. i mean, i get promos, but i get them pretty late (i work at a weekly), and usually discussion's already passed by.

i like the idea of a trial run.

mte, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

metal's part of music, is covered under "i love music," no need for a separate board in my opinion.

aerosmith: live at gunpoint (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:08 (fifteen years ago)

but pfunk having a rolling thread here AND a subboard would be even more confusing and ppl would have no idea where to post anything

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

i actually want to know what would be getting posted on this new board that couldn't find a home on "i love music"

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

i would say, if we want to try something, try creating more metal threads on ilm first

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, there are a bunch of rap threads -- if you want to discuss some specific metal genre or artist, just do what cad said

markers, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, we have a bruno mars got arrested for cocaine possession thread, so I don't think people will protest a "specific metal band" thread or a "what's good in grindcore right now?" thread

markers, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

yeah we act like more content-filled ilm threads would be a bad thing

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:19 (fifteen years ago)

^also this - I stated, in writing, my intent to post more on the bobbins thread this year but a few weeks in people were so fucking insufferable that I could hardly be bothered looking at it after that

Heurelho Gomes & The Scene (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:21 (fifteen years ago)

look why cant we have a 3 month trial run. If the majority at the end of that want to scrap it, we do?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:24 (fifteen years ago)

Remember by creating more threads on ILM they will drop off new answers page very quickly. All I'm asking is we have a 3 month trial. If anyone wants to keep this rolling metal thread going at the sametime then thats good too.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:25 (fifteen years ago)

man, seems like you're hellbent on starting this but I just don't think most of the people on here really want it to happen.

original bgm, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:26 (fifteen years ago)

markers, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:26 (fifteen years ago)

for the record, I'd prob post on the metal board because I like metal threads. but the idea strikes me as a bit unnecessary.

original bgm, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:27 (fifteen years ago)

bit like markers above "post"

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

Herman <3 bro but admit that if you get this you will start linking to all the polls you start on I Love Metal here on the rolling metal thread. and reminder posts that the polls are closing. etc. And it will be a drag, and you will say, well if you guys would just move it over to I Love Metal, I wouldn't need to keep doing this! And it'll be just unnecessary tension. I Love Jazz, I Love Rock, I Love Pre-Baroque Polyphony...none of these are needed, because we Love Music generally speaking.

aerosmith: live at gunpoint (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:29 (fifteen years ago)

nope, i wont smithy. How about we have no polls on I Love Metal?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

Who says yes to a 3 month trial (with no polls)?
Who says no full stop?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

I'm against it.

aerosmith: live at gunpoint (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

polls are very much an ILE & ILM thing as you need a lot of people for them. A separate board would be all discussion led.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

think u know where i stand

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:36 (fifteen years ago)

Whatever it is, I'm against it.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

well i wish more would post here rather than just lurk, why do you lurkers not post here?

Well I for one don't post much in general on ILX because I don't have the time - I waste enough already reading it without getting into actual discussions. Specifically I don't post on Rolling Metal because, like I said, I am something of a metal dilettante and I have only become an active listener in the last couple of years. I really have no idea about what is going on in the scene, what is being released etc - Rolling Metal/ILM is the only resource I use for metal, except for the rare occasions when the Wire has an article on it. If Rolling Metal says go listen to this band I do; if a band isn't mentioned on here, then I probably will never get to hear them - so no pressure guys!

When I have posted, everyone seems very friendly. The idea that someone would be intimidated by a message board does not compute for me.

ps no to the 3 month trial as well.

ears are wounds, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

count me as a "no" as well. sorry, dude.

original bgm, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

What about an I Love Satan board that just coincidently has a ton of metal threads on it? eh???

Randolph Carter (Viceroy), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

no need for a separate board imo. personally prefer Rolling Metal + bookmark to keeping track of a whole new board.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

i vote yes on an I Love Satan board, however.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

I vote no on I Love Satin. Got to draw the line somewhere.

So, back to the topic - anyone picking up new stuff today? I'm intrigued by the Opeth live DVD/CD set (though not sure if I want the cds or not) and Dawnbringer looks promising based on the one song I heard.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

gonna pick up the torche. know nothing of dawnbringer beyond mentions here--what kind of stuff is it?
