you could still have this thread, and leave the sub-board for threads on individual bands & albums.

unrelated but you guys should totally get a football board. not because football threads "clog up ile" or whatever, i just think you all would have a lot of fun with it

ilh and ilnfl are the two best boards on the site

for the same reason you wouldn't like a metal board. but threads on niche stuff not clogging up the main board makes sense. It works for other sub-boards.

i kind of understand that for ile, but why exactly does ilm need to stay "unclogged?"

dunno, im not one of the ones who complain about new answers being clogged up. but then again I dont use site new answers.

Just got to hear the Christian Mistress record - holy hell is that great! Rhythm section had me bobbing along, and Christine Davis' delivery is emotional and real, perfect pitch be damned. Great, great listen. Thanks to all on here that have repeatedly brought it up.

I would visit an I Love Metal board. It would keep me from getting caught up in annoying discussions about contemporary hip-hop and other things I shouldn't really be wasting my time thinking about.

This thread (and the people on it) = 90% of the reason I check this site.

The other 10% is the Rush threads, right?

I wouldn't mind a separate board - I have less and less interest in the general discussions as the years go by - but I don't see it as a necessity.

rolling threads/big bands/existing threads would still exist on ILM. Board would be for smaller bands/albums or even rolling BM, Rolling Doom, Rolling grind, Rolling Shite Metallica Album, etc etc

in all seriousness though, there's no I Love Rap board or no I Love Dance Music board -- I just think we'd be setting a precedent that's not worth setting. ILM is ILX's music board, and that's how it will probably remain

who cares about other boards though? hehe.

we're pretty much independent from the rest of ILM anyway, no?

let me put it this way: are there posters holding back on posting things to this thread for fear of flooding it? like, if there were a Rolling Grindcore thread on a separate metal board, would there be enough people posting to that thread? and would there be enough people posting to all the other separate metal threads that would inevitably arise too? it's not like the number of posters on ILM invested in metal is huge afaict

I hold back posting on this thread for fear of posting "old news" or whatever...

As in, I may find out about an album months after its been released and love it and want to talk about but the threads moved on...

discussion gets lost on a lot of bands in this thread. If you don't discuss it when someone has the promo its very easily lost.

And yes, people just wont start threads for smaller albums,genres,labels for fear of flooding.

Even a trial for 3 months to see how it went would be good.

and yes, if you wanna discuss old bands/albums this thread isnt really for it.

you could all design a metal css stylesheet for it!

Why not just have a Rolling Metal Pre- [whatever the year is] Thread? Talk about what you like with like minded folks who probably have something to share. Or just bring it up here anyways - I asked for some tips as to where to start with Hammers of Misfortune and I got a bunch of opinions and help.

I haven't heard any slams on people bringing up stuff later in the year either; I expect another discussion about Enslaved when that drops even though a number of critics have already said their bit, and I hope someone else listens to the Christian Mistress I mentioned earlier if they haven't and brings it up again.

it wouldnt just be metal, it would be heavy rock too. All the Glam Metal fans would have fun on it too. The hardcore punks as well. It would cater to all sub-genres of metal that doesn't really get discussed by the general ilm posters (ie 99% of them)

EZ , as i said, this rolling thread could still remain on here. That wouldn't change, but a separate board for other stuff would be better I think. We're pretty much a community of our own anyway.

I know - just think that the rolling threads let one band remind someone of another album and then the conversation goes there and then somewhere else, jumping, spinning, digressing and enlightening. If I could discover old stuff the same way and not have to read 40 six-post threads I'd love it.

rolling threads just get so unwieldy and it would be nice to have all the info one one band on one thread, so it can be searched for future reference, like i said, most of us dont get promos. I think some ilxors are put off as this thread can be mostly music crits sometimes.

Let me put it this way; If this were a rolling dr. who thread (not the one that actually exists, a hypothetical one) it would consist of long discussions about one off-characters, what else they did in British TV land -- how they played a similar character in an episode of Blake's 7 and then landed a part on a sitcom where it seemed like an odd fit. There'd be bitter divides over what to call the front bottom part of a Dalek (a grill, a skirt?), and what Terry Nation's real intentions were for the pepper-pot villains. There wouldn't just be talk of old episode plots, but detailed biographical discussion of the writer of the episode, what else he wrote during his career as a TV writer, his venomous relationship with Barry Letts and how he just reused all his plots later in underwhelming NA target paperbacks (and anyway stole them from Douglas Adams to begin with!). There wouldn't just be people talking about the cheesy old alien costumes, but discussion of the blokes in the costumes and how they were also key grips for the 12th-15th seasons and once also played one of the bionic tribesmen in "Four to Doomsday."

Now if you are someone who has seen some of the new series and maybe, just maybe, caught Genesis of the Daleks on dvd and want to talk about your new favorite show... does such an environment seem very inviting to you? Even if everyone is really awesome and polite, you still might feel kinda dumb and out of place - no?

Haha, great example and one that probably applies to me. I can only think of four, maybe five people that would care or discuss that much detail and tbh we don't do it here because there are other places on the internet for it. Good God, the Doctor Who thread that follows the series argues every year about what constitutes a SPOILER and what doesn't FFS!

As others have said, I think balkanizing ILM is a bad idea. There's lots of good advice of here for people that come looking and the only time I lose the place with it is if I'm away from a computer for > 1 week (although iPhone is now helping with that). Keep it the way it is, I come here a much for the people as anything else. And no, I probably wouldn't post that much to the Rolling Grindcore thread on the hypothetical board.

I'll go one step further - I Love Cooking. Seemed like a great idea at the time, now no discussion about cooking on the main board (food, yes, but it's not the same thing) and apart from the Rolling Cooking thread the place is a desert.

yeah this is a ridic idea and I really don't know why it's even being talked about, all the arguments for it appear to be largely based on devil's advocacy?

not that I read them but I have visited the Hellride forums and they have sub-boards for every last nebulous genre of metal/heavy rock within their remit - surprise surprise it's chock full of aspie douchebags

I'm just a lurker so my opinion probably counts for less, but I think it is a really bad idea to split off every genre into its own little board. Where do you stop for one thing? And as someone who is a bit of dilettante when it comes to sampling a broad spectrum of music, I can't understand why you would want to ghettoize music taste like that.

I vote retain rolling metal thread, no need for further Balkanization of ILX.

Also- congrats Nate, looking forward to listening to the sampler!
