Her presence would have forced the excision of several blah Buckingham and Nicks songs.

^^^^^ sorely missed on the otherwise excellent Say You Will.

Made more cruel by her audible presence in a lot of the Buckingham songs on that record.

I always get confused and think Stevie is the man and Lindsay is the woman.

Christine. Her material is always underrated on ILM in all the pre-poll results banter but usually finishes at/near the top.

if I made a fleetwood mac pox stevie would probably do the best, but voted buck

iatee, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, i just wanna spread it around a little, so i voted for bob welch, because FUTURE GAMES is a really important song to remember here. i could have easily voted for peter green, mick fleetwood, christine mcvie, lindsey buckingham, or stevie nicks, though.

69, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 18:32 (fifteen years ago)

my brain says lindsey, my heart says stevie, my gut says the two guys who the band is named for. i think the rhythm section elevated this weird collective of smart singer-songwriters into something much more than a weird collective of smart singer-songwriters.

Mick and John really do deserve some credit for keeping the thing going. Seems like there were a few different periods where they could have hung it up, but they didn't.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 18:35 (fifteen years ago)

If this poll had a right answer the band would be way less interesting.

SYNTAX ERROR (remy bean), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 01:17 (fifteen years ago)

Well, Welch was in charge for my favorite album of theirs (M2M) and Kirwan was in charge for my second favorite (BT). Probably have to go with Kirwan, as he seems kind of crucial in helping them bridge the gap from blues to...other stuff.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 01:18 (fifteen years ago)

Peter Green... but only just over Christine

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 10:46 (fifteen years ago)

This is the closest I have got to 'credits', I'm certain that it's Danny Kirwain who did the majority of OhWellPart2, but remained uncredited.

― Mark G, Monday, 20 September 2010 15:48 (1 week ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

Funnily enough, over the weekend "Oh Well" was on TOTP2, and you can see it's Danny Kirwain taking the majority of the solos on Part1 as well!

Mark G, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 11:11 (fifteen years ago)

Her presence would have forced the excision of several blah Buckingham and Nicks songs.

I bet Say You Will is one of those albums where everyone says "oh there's filler" but everyone means different songs.

lindsey obviously

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 12:37 (fifteen years ago)

well I love Stevie's songs in FM, but don't have time for her solo stuff...and Peter Green is a great guitar player, but I never liked Then Play On...fuck it, I'm voting John McVie.

Dirt to Iron Man: "Suck it" (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 13:26 (fifteen years ago)

I'm expecting John to get short-changed here. There seems to be no particular reason to pick him. You dig the r&b roots rhythm section? Vote for Mick, he's a bit more showy. Enjoy the melodic, driving chug? Vote for Lindsey's rhythm playing. Intrigued by the emotional turmoil? Go for any of the others. Want to pay tribute to the early days? Got to be Peter Green. Etc etc. John seems to be best at hiding baldness and having a red nose.

John is very much responsible for making Dreams one of the greatest songs ever!

not what I meant; I meant second most responsible after Stevie...his basslines play a huge part in that song imo.

also Ismael OTM about The Chain.

drown sandwich (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

I guess I'll go for Christine McVie, because she wrote most of the best songs on "Tango In The Night".

Dave Mason has made the best music, but that was with Traffic in 1967 and I would say that doesn't count.

If they were to ask me I would probably be very delighted … but it hasn't happened so we'll have to wait and see.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 23 November 2013 13:03 (twelve years ago)

Her remarks were made in a Guardian interview with her and Nicks to be published later this year. During the interview, in which they discuss their friendship, their decadent 1970s lifestyle and experiences of sexism in the music industry.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 23 November 2013 13:16 (twelve years ago)

That's great for her and fans, but it's kind of a shame she waited until they had to cancel their tour because John has cancer. Hopefully the band comes out at the end intact. This is one farewell reunion I'd be really excited about.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 23 November 2013 13:39 (twelve years ago)

Could it be whispers about her rejoining brought on McVie's cancer?

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 23 November 2013 13:43 (twelve years ago)

^ha I felt that one coming.

While we wait for that Guardian interview, this silly little video is a pretty good document of their friendship and "decadent 1970s lifestyle":

Christine
So smooth...

calstars, Monday, 17 August 2020 19:01 (five years ago)

Christine is the beating heart of the band, which is why I adore Tango in the Night and her contributions to it so much

beamish13, Monday, 17 August 2020 19:17 (five years ago)

Peter Green will always be my favorite (and even then, I think Danny Kirwan may even edge him out as their best guitarist). Lindsey Buckingham is also close behind (and IMHO, he's also had the best solo career of any member by a good margin).

But Christine is amazing. After they blew up commercially to gargantuan proportions, I think she and Buckingham probably wrote the best material, but she also wrote the best tunes after Peter Green left and before Buckingham & Nicks came on board - almost single-handedly, she made that stretch of time worth hearing. You can make a great LP out of the dozen best cuts she sung and wrote during those years. "Spare Me a Little...," "Remember Me," "Dissatisfied," "Did You Ever Love Me," "Why," "Heroes Are Hard to Find," "Come a Little Bit Closer," "Show Me a Smile," "The Way I Feel," etc.

brimstead, Monday, 27 May 2024 14:11 (two years ago)

That is a ranking I mostly agree with. I would put “crystal” and “sisters of the moon” high up in the SOLID category
