noz is absolutely slating the album on twitter
― i feed these skreets (tpp), Sunday, 19 September 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)
yeah he's totally right about that stretch of songs in the second half, that Nicki/Pharrell song is truly awful as is the Wyclef song

ok obv i haven't heard the album yet & reserve judgment but "i think the magic might be gone" is idiotic, mr zone 6 and jewelry selection are amazing & state vs radric davis wasn't even one of his best releases last year
― samosa gibreel, Sunday, 19 September 2010 17:08 (fifteen years ago)
State Vs Radric Davis got critically slammed by quite a few critics, too. I dunno how easy it is to gauge quality from early reviews cuz there are plenty of critics who think he sucks, just as there are plenty who think he is amazing.
― turn in yer badge (San Te), Sunday, 19 September 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)
yeah and who looks to these albums for the magic anyway? i assume it will be a pile of overproduced shit, and if there are 3 or 4 songs last time that are really good--like classical, gingerbread man, and bingo on the last one--then i'll be happy.
― Jacques_Lamure, Sunday, 19 September 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

definitely don't think noz is among the former tbh

Does that surprise you? Also... I kind of like that Pharell/Nicki collabo?
― altered boners (rennavate), Monday, 20 September 2010 18:21 (fifteen years ago)
i don't HATE it. too much pharell and not enough gucci though
― i feed these skreets (tpp), Monday, 20 September 2010 18:22 (fifteen years ago)
i think gucci sounds pretty cool over the beat
― i feed these skreets (tpp), Monday, 20 September 2010 18:23 (fifteen years ago)
Young Jeezy album pushed back, Gucci not going to have as much competition, although Lil Boosie and Ice Cube still have joints coming out.
I have Gucci on pre-order, fingers still crossed.
― turn in yer badge (San Te), Monday, 20 September 2010 18:27 (fifteen years ago)
dunno that new joint is pretty super boring. the beginning of his second verse sounded pretty sweet though.
― Jacques_Lamure, Monday, 20 September 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)
lets face it guccis great but he's falling off, even waka's doing better in the charts lately. i dont think his label is promoting him as much as they should, i mean his last 2 singles didnt even have proper videos
― chilli, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 03:59 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, it's all label fuckery. any of us in this thread could do so much better a job managing his career at this point.
gucci time as a single is the most braindead decision of all time.
― Jacques_Lamure, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 04:04 (fifteen years ago)
it prob sounds butthurt on my end to say that he's been managed terribly but he's been managed absolutely terribly
think about the fact that by far his biggest single since his renaissance -- "wasted" -- was the one that got zero label promotion & in fact when the label did try and promote the song, they replaced pretty much everyone's favorite (the plies one) with some disastrous juiceman verse that actually caused a palpable backlash from fans and radio DJs
"spotlight" was a total disaster of course, and "it's gucci time" was a step in the right direction in the sense that it was not a chick song, but it was still a really mismatched pairing
i think i said this before (maybe not) but they tried to skip to his "lollipop"/"whatever you like" without building up the "go dj"/"fireman"/"rubberband man"/"bring em out" foundation
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 September 2010 04:05 (fifteen years ago)
i mean the most braindead gucci mane decision of all time. obv godfather 3 and stuff were worse.
― Jacques_Lamure, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 04:05 (fifteen years ago)
altho he hasn't fallen off cuz his raps are still largely dope when he's not on songs with wyclef
oh hay jordan

never checked that
― if you can put a ceiling fan in your van (deej), Thursday, 23 September 2010 06:14 (fifteen years ago)
yeah it's not as bad as i was expecting either. its dumb that the album seems split between the street stuff and the pop stuff with neptunes et al. i don't mind him working with the neptunes and gucci makes an effort to adapt to it but basically these are just shit songs. i like gucci's flow on haterade but half the songs feels like pharrell's terrible hook - gucci is a genius at writing hooks i mean what the fuck is going on here? this guy is a street rapper who has had a remarkable pop sensibility right from very beginning but it really doesn't come across at all on this record.
'trap talk' is amazing. loving 'missing' and 'what's it gonna be' (in partic the hook!!!). the middle stretch of the album just seems mostly unlistenable to me right now. there's some good stuff at the end 'weirdo' in partic. can't help but think 'grown man' could have been turned from a shit song into an amazing song had you given the same material to block beataz.
basically there is some good "street gucci" on here but there is no brilliant pop crossover hit which really should be what he's going for on the major album. what a shame.

tatted up ~song peaks~
is sooooo good, one of my favourite musical instants at the moment. i find the tone of the song up to that point tenuously menacing but also just jokey detached trap talk, and then suddenly it's like he's standing up shaking you by the shoulders. perfectly complimented by the beat drop
