i was trying to open a dialog there. :(

it is a little bit messy (mostly toward the end), but its strengths overcome that imo. what is the sample? it sounds familiar but i can't place it.
― markers garvey (The Reverend), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:55 (thirteen years ago) link
the sample really puts me in a good mood.
― markers garvey (The Reverend), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:56 (thirteen years ago) link
i think it's really sonically unpleasant w/ barely a hook
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:57 (thirteen years ago) link
ahhh, i love the sonics. the hook is kinda bare but works?
― markers garvey (The Reverend), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:59 (thirteen years ago) link
oh shit, it's "video killed the radio star" haha
― markers garvey (The Reverend), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:00 (thirteen years ago) link
it also bothers me that on "omg" usher just sounds like a will body double & on this joint nicki is just playing the role of fergie -- there's no collaboration... it's just grafting other pop stars onto black eyed peas songs -- with usher it felt a bit more okay because he had already showed that he was just gonna jump on whatever trend could keep his career alive, but with nicki i feel like there should be more of a meeting of a minds than what this is
also her rap verse shouldn't be buried after 3 mins of will.i.am
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:01 (thirteen years ago) link
that factor is way more depressing on "omg" probably because usher can do way more than he does and it feels like he's really limiting himself. i don't feel like nikki ends up as subsumed, but i don't think "check it out" sounds that much like a bep song. really, it's more in line with will's last solo album, which i liked most of.
i don't really care how this fits into nikki's career arc tho.
― markers garvey (The Reverend), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:06 (thirteen years ago) link
in fact i like it more for will than for nikki.
― markers garvey (The Reverend), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:07 (thirteen years ago) link
the will.i.am bits on this are even worse than...the rest of it, which is pretty bad, apart from nicki's rap, which arrives way too late in the day to rescue it
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 10:53 (thirteen years ago) link
fuck all the talk about having threesomes w/ cassie & amber rose, i think the most subversive thing nicki's ever said on record is "i'm with a bad bitch/ he's with his friends" because she says it so casually that it's almost hard to notice
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:39 (thirteen years ago) link
also i'm still trying to figure out the ratio of gross crassness: hilarious brilliance of "and we be doin donuts while we wave in the 380/ we give a lot of money to the babies out in haiti"
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:40 (thirteen years ago) link
^^yeah agree
― lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:41 (thirteen years ago) link
with the bad bitch line, but also the haiti one
from a straight rhyming perspective tho i've gotta give it up for "wave in the 380" & "babies out in haiti"
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:42 (thirteen years ago) link
thirded.

and pretty sure the "bad bitch" and "he" aren't to be taken as the same person, sorry guys

"roman's revenge" is my #1 radio jam right now -- hardest diss track in forever too
― J0rdan S., Friday, 14 January 2011 17:43 (thirteen years ago) link
I've been listening to it for three days straight – my new office jam. Last semester I used to get the editor pumped with "B.M.F."
― Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 14 January 2011 17:45 (thirteen years ago) link
i heard it for the first time today and that beat is too garbage for me to even wanna listen to the rapping
― some dude, Friday, 14 January 2011 18:56 (thirteen years ago) link
oh for god's sake
― Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 14 January 2011 18:57 (thirteen years ago) link
okay THIS is the song that she was recording on her MTV documentary that made me go "wait, WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-?"
― Indolence Mission (DJP), Friday, 14 January 2011 19:03 (thirteen years ago) link
who's it a diss against?
― dayo, Saturday, 15 January 2011 00:54 (thirteen years ago) link
Kim, but there's only like 2 lines that are even slightly more pointed than a billion Nicki songs randomly dissing nameless female rappers, "hardest diss track in forever" is pretty ridic
― some dude, Saturday, 15 January 2011 01:10 (thirteen years ago) link
lol, I wonder if the diss track is dead in today's rap
really wish somebody would make a nicki-only edit of this. love nicki's parts but hate hate hate em's parts. two peas and a tripod?? ugh, the payoff is so not worth it.
MAAAAAANNINGMANNING ELI

yea this placed in my ilx ballot, its a jam
obv that em line is hideous but the rest is the 1st time ive been able to tolerate him in ages
― johnny crunch, Saturday, 15 January 2011 02:56 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah it's kind of crazy how much he sounds like old school Shady
― some dude, Saturday, 15 January 2011 03:08 (thirteen years ago) link
the "two peas and a tripod" line doesn't bother me as much cuz there's actually a 'story' that builds up to it
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 January 2011 03:10 (thirteen years ago) link
Roman's Revenge would have made my Pazz and Jop were it a single in 2010.
Nicki raps like everything I hate about 2011 and Eminem raps like everything I love about 1999. Pretty much best verse of 2010 next to Earl's rap over "Drop" and Roc Marci's "Raw Deal"
eye-em-oh
― I Lost A COGHdrop in His Pato (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 15 January 2011 03:15 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah but the story feels so contrived, seems like he did it just to use the punchline, opposite of old school shady - putting the cart before the horse as it were xp
― dayo, Saturday, 15 January 2011 03:16 (thirteen years ago) link
there's not much that separates ems verse on roman's revenge from his verses on love the way you lie
― dayo, Saturday, 15 January 2011 03:22 (thirteen years ago) link
also it sounds like eminem show-era eminem, which was an eminem who had already used up his vitriol on the MMLP
sorry I'm gonna start talking about em now

i'm not gonna call it the "best verse of 2010" (smh) but there's a definite focus that recalls early em

fuck you kevin k3ller, werent you like jackin it to Avalanches records when Em was doing his best material?

whiney when you call even a good eminem verse the best verse of 2010 (or even an ok jay-z song the best rap song of 2009) do you really expect ppl here to not shake their heads at how boring and old that makes you seem
― some dude, Saturday, 15 January 2011 03:52 (thirteen years ago) link
you're right, gucci mane's "my car orange like an orange" raps are much more impressive than this, carry on, ILX

ehh early em was a lot more playful, w/ good punchlines that had lots of creative metaphors (like form like voltron and blast you w my shoulder missiles to pick one I was just listening too)
this nu-em still has the obsession w rhymes and the sound of words but largely drops that kind of lyrical playfulness

like whatever, some dude, it's not like i'm not banging Mouse On The Track and Roachy Gigz and Odd Future all fuckin day either, its just that i don't throw away my old toys when i'm done playing with them.
And also, Em's rap on this is incredible and I'm not gonna stand idly by while someone growing his first pube on ILX shakes his head at me

i don't really listen to any of the people you referred to and i'm not exactly a poster boy for casting aside old rappers. i'm just saying, picking the occasional defensible nu-Em or nu-Jay track and championing it as THE BEST OF THE BEST just looks so square that even if you think you're right you should probably be ready to take some shit for it
