Meaning I just think it's silly that Gary Gersh thought, "Oh gee, I'll do something really nice for Joe, I'll name my label after him." The label could be major, indie, bedroom, world-dominant, with a major distribution deal, or without, I would still think it's silly, esp. so close to his death.

And Joe Strummer's legacy is the music he made with the Clash, his politics, and his late-period stuff w/ the Mescaleros.

So I saw 'em last night here in Mtl. Great show. They were terrific--really high energy, very smiley, mr. dancer/saxophone&cowbell fancy-pantser very endearing. Sounds like they played more or less the same set as everywhere else, with a couple minor changes ("Louie Louie" instead of "Rock & Roll Part 2"). The crowd was very excitable and dancy, I was jumping up and down at the front of the stage. A wicked night out, one of the best concerts I've been to in a while (part of this must be attributed to a lot of friends being there & me getting some great news early in the night). Erlend Oye opened, and he was very winning.

1) Q & Not U did this better on "Kiss Distinctly American."

I still wanna know about the alternate 'HOJL' I downloaded though. Hopefully, it's the album version but probably not.

That cover is cool, lots better than the Playgroup one too. It's got the 'moved-on-up-ness' of Discovery's cover in relation to Homework's-and mo' props for using their actual faces.

three weeks pass...

I caught the band at Fopp on Earlham St. last night. They were an hour late but it was more or less worth it. They played 'Out Of The Races', 'Sister Saviour' and 'HOJL' then signed copies of the single (me: the 12", the 7" and a poster the staff gave me for free). For the first time in ever, I actually got nevous-chatty talking to a band. WTF up with that? I even forgot to ask them about the damn mp3! They are all pretty cool though, I would've tried to blag my way to the boat party tonight but the queue etc.

Trevor Jackson was also there and I told him I found an old Brotherhood 12" in a quid bin. "Always sad when they end up there", he said, probably fuming inside. I told him I'd been listening to Playgroup a lot over the weekend (I was trying to figure out where that duff reggae number fit into the scheme of things and I was mostly listening to 'Bring It On', 'Medicine Man' and 'Too Much'). "You're a madman", he told me before leaving.

I saw the Rapture at Tribal Gathering's big acid house warehouse thing in Manchester on Saturday and they blew my mind. They were in a small backroom with graffiti everywhere and sweat dripping off the roof playing to a crowd which was really jumped up, not least after the DJ before them played Go and then Hardtrance Experience.

Anyway they really gave it everything and seemed to enjoy it so much, the singer was screaming and then stage dived, it really felt like a seminal moment of the year, I enjoyed them as much as anything else this year, and I am firmly a dance fan.

Sister Saviour is a dementedly good record.

they should be on top of the pops, daytime radio 1, radio 2, the works, let nothing hold them back!

Thing is, we need a band like the Rapture to be popular in the hope that pop will pay attention to an entire genre besides hip hop and r'n'b (as far as I could tell for example, dancehall blowing up this year actually amounts to Sean Paul and 'Diwali' blowing up) and because I want the DFA to achieve their 'engagement with pop culture' dreams.

Pete, I was hoping to find out if anyone here would go but I found out too late for a message. I was the only black person there if that helps. And yeah, they are grebt indoors.

I don't get it!

The non-remix version I heard had tinnier higher pitched percussion after the "shakedooooown" part, that's as much difference as I noted.

I am enjoying the Cosmos remix alot, it's not better than the original and there's not alot of point to remixing HOTJL but it's still cool.

Hey lauren, think I remember you too. I'm away from the mp3 right now, people, but gygax seems to be closest to an ID. Basically, this version is 5.58 mins long, the guitar riffs that sound a little like rave synth stabs form the intro then carry on as a drumbeat (actual, not programmed) comes in 4 or 8 bars later (can't really remember) then the other elements (cowbell, bass riff etc) come in-I think the new intro and a slightly different mix are what makes this a new one. I think the housey breakbeat is either fairly muted or doesn't appear b/c I can't fully remember it being there.

I wasn't so into the remixes-I think Geist just about covered it all, though Middleton gave a good stab.
