Five for all time is too hard, in the end I sorta broke it down by decades so everyone got their fair shot:

VU - Sister Ray (to ensure it pisses off the neighbors)
Clash - Death or Glory (hard to pick but wins out for convolving fucking with nuns)
Replacements - Color Me Impressed (the best song on their best record)
Wilco - Misunderstood (for the haters)
Spaceshits - C'mon Let's Suicide (to up the guitar and lo-fi quotients a bit more, because I know that's what ILM likes best)

5 for 2005 - I absolutely cheated here, to check on dates and get song names right, in my perfect world these are the songs that'd be blarin' out of car windows on hot summer nights:
