artists that were on VH1's 1998 "Greatest Artists of All Time" list but not the 2010 list

I'm most surprised that the Jackson 5 were not in the list this time. Michael Jackson's fans always seem to come out in force for these kind of lists and especially since he died I would have expected them and him solo to both be top ten.

As for my favourite on the list that would be either Devo or The Four Tops. It's a shame that all the Motown artists seem to have been forgotten this time round, I imagine Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder would be the only Motown artists representing this time round.

no worries, pimp ship

:)

it's pretty bullshit that CCR got dumped, and Paul Simon dropped off the list twice. Grateful Dead isn't that surprising in retrospect but it still feels weird. also kinda sad that Whitney/Mariah/Alicia Keys/Beyonce/Mary J. have completely supplanted Diana Ross.

some dude, Friday, 10 September 2010 14:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Is there any jazz or blues left in the list?

Bobby Rivers must be pissed.

Olde Executioner 8hundo (Eazy), Friday, 10 September 2010 14:35 (fourteen years ago) link

I voted for Coltrane, and I suspect many will vote for him or Miles Davis, but after seeing the list, it's clear that there were probably specific instructions not to vote for jazz. This is a pop/rock list.

Indexed, Friday, 10 September 2010 14:38 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, i don't know if there were instructions but obviously the voter base was younger this time and a little less concerned with token picks outside the popular music canon. a few times they showed famous musicians' ballots with Frank Sinatra on them, so i was a little surprised he wasn't on the list but in retrospect it makes sense.

some dude, Friday, 10 September 2010 14:45 (fourteen years ago) link

I voted for CCR

I think the 00s list should be LEAST deserving? Or maybe most? Idk but that's more interesting to me than favorite

I was gonna try and not get aggro over this list by then I was watching and they had pink Floyd almost 50 spots better than biggie

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 September 2010 17:20 (fourteen years ago) link

fuck taking off miles and trane.

a hoy hoy, Friday, 10 September 2010 17:26 (fourteen years ago) link

well i already did the other poll as favorites. maybe i can do a least deserving later.

imo all the hip hop acts on the spot got as high as they could possibly go, higher than would've expected.

some dude, Friday, 10 September 2010 17:27 (fourteen years ago) link

100 Alicia Keys
99 Hall & Oates
98 Depeche Mode
97 Pretenders
96 Journey

I picked Buddy Holly because he's personal all-time desert island shit for me, but any of these really:

Sam Cooke
Bo Diddley
The Jackson Five
Smokey Robinson
Gladys Knight & The Pips
The Temptations
The Four Tops
Diana Ross & The Supremes

teledyldonix, Friday, 10 September 2010 22:55 (fourteen years ago) link

The elimination of all pre-rock and jazz artists is pretty annoying, but I suppose inevitable. And the downfall of Clapton, the Eagles, Crosby Still & Nash, Sting (!), James Taylor, the Allman Brothers & Stevie Ray Vaughan is worth celebrating. And as much as I love/like the Four Tops, Paul Simon, Sex Pistols, CCR, Roy Orbison, B.B. King, the Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, Rod Stewart, Devo, Carole King, Tom Waits, Traffic and Gladys Knight, they almost certainly wouldn't make my list of the 100 greatest artist, so I can't complain too much. And I'll give them a pass on the Jackson 5 omission given Michael Jackson's #2 placement. And Iggy Pop wasn't really omitted at all. That leaves me feeling varying degrees of resentment and outrage over the ouster of Buddy Holly, the Byrds (especially considering REM did place), Sam Cooke, Smokey Robinson, Bo Diddley, T. Rex. the Temptations, and Fats Domino. As influential all those figures have been, Sam Cooke strikes me as the most extraordinary figure on that list, a performer who irrevecably changed the course of popular music, something I don't think anyone would claim about Journey or Alice Keys. Not only that, but he's amazingly great. So yeah, that's the exclusion that most surprises and annoys me the most.

a cankle of rads (Gukbe), Saturday, 11 September 2010 00:52 (fourteen years ago) link

*irrevocably* and, oh yes, *Alicia.* And I forgot to list Diana Ross and the Supremes as being among the most dismaying omissions. I mean, I love love love the Pretenders, but it would be nuts to suggest that Chrissie Hynde was more important than Diana Ross.

MumblestheRevelator, Saturday, 11 September 2010 00:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Bo Diddley, the Byrds, CCR, the Dead, Sam Cooke & the Allmans seem like the biggest omissions to me.

the byrds & ccr rank among my favorite arteests of all time, so ymmv.

Dropped like eight Motown artists from the chart and put Justin Timberlake in at #66.

Bo Diddley. Full stop.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 11 September 2010 12:45 (fourteen years ago) link

I feel like if I were going to try to be objective about it and make it more a matter of most important artists, I'd have to go with Miles, but I really don't care for his music. So I will take Coltrane, though Paul Simon, Diana Ross, and Gladys Knight are all tempting.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 11 September 2010 16:04 (fourteen years ago) link

I like Tapestry a lot but I'm always surprised to see best-of lists with Carole King, because it's really just that one album that's she's known for as a performer, & that album is good but doesn't justify in itself inclusion on such a list. You could vote for her based on her songwriting but then why not include other songwriters and like, Phil Spector or Berry Gordy?

Euler, Saturday, 11 September 2010 16:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Tom Waits. Zappa, Paul Simon runners up.

Not surprised 80% of posts are Davis worship.

Seriously. MILES FUCKING DAVIS. CC FUCKING R. I don't even like the Grateful Dead but if you make a Top 100 and don't drop them in a token spot you are high. Fuck this list. I didn't even look at both lists but seriously you dropped the Temptations? Fuck you/die/etc. Even for a VH1 crowd...*puke*
