isn't Dave Pajo in Interpol now? Is he on the album? Good move if so.

the tune is space, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 16:48 (thirteen years ago) link

skimming Wikipedia . . .

Carlos D. played bass on the record:

It was announced that Interpol's fourth album will be self-titled and will be released sometime in mid-September.[14] It will be bassist Carlos D.'s last effort with Interpol.

On Pajo:

In early June 2010, the musicians who will play with Interpol on live dates were announced to be David Pajo (formerly of Slint and many other bands) on bass and Brandon Curtis of The Secret Machines on keyboards and vocals.

The album art for their first two records was appropriate and functional, but art for the past two records seriously veers into some smh territory.

Point well-taken. A perfect parallel to the music (w/r/t the Our Love to Admire and this new one) itself, I think.

To be fair, the last two have had some gems. I wish more of their recent output would mimic the closing tracks on the new one, and a handful from the one before. All of the good qualities of post-Antics Interpol and what few there are of Banks' (or Julian Plenti, whatever the hell he wants to be called) solo material.

A little embarrassed, but, yes, I did. Had to check it out when I heard Matador was back in the picture. There're a couple of good ones on it, if you can imagine.

was way better than Our Love To Admire, but nowhere near as good as the first two Interpol records

I actually really like this one, which is more than I can really say for Antics or the last one. Personally, I'd rate them about like this:

Turn On the Bright Lights - 9.3 (still one of my favorite albums of last decade, questionable lyrics and all)
Antics - 7.2 (was a huge disappointment at the time, but it has grown on me a bit)
Our Love to Admire - 6.8 (this never really clicked with me at all)
Interpol - 8.0ish (still early goings, don't see it really climbing a whole lot higher though)

d00d, I actually really like the first two Interpol records! there was a period from, like, fall 2008 to the beginning of 2009 where that's what I listened to the most

markers, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 04:15 (thirteen years ago) link

then I listened to Our Love To Admire, didn't like it -- did like the Banks solo record, but it doesn't touch either of the first two Interpol LPs. looks like this one isn't gonna be that great, but we'll see

markers, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 04:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I think there's a certain downhill trend:

Turn On the Bright Lights - 9,0
Antics - 8,4 (definitely a grower, but after it clicked it's magical)
Our Love to Admire - 7,7 (a few standout tracks and sometimes a bit dull, but still great)
Interpol - 7,0 - (first half is more than promising, second half is pedestrian, expect the great closing track)

zeus, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 07:49 (thirteen years ago) link

really really dug both their first two albums as well. and I love their lyrics.

i liked antics better than bright lights, less straight up early 00s post-punk revival and more interesting and catchy melodies imo

man, no review? thinking of going to buy the record today -- maybe

markers, Friday, 10 September 2010 16:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I've listened once and it's not a record that I immediately love or hate. Mood is consistent throughout, no songs really jumped out at me as THE SINGLE or THE BEST SONG. Overall it's not offensively bad, but a bit of a snooze.

Might get around to listening to this, only because I recently was reminded that a few songs from Turn Off The Bright Lights were "quite good". Then I'll be let down and have to punch my balls or something.

Pfork gave Interpol s/t album a well-deserved 10.0 Best New Music as well as Best Album of 2010 since it obviously has no competition.
