haha - "these days"

seriously - to matt groening, cameron crowe, gilbert gottfried or whoever the fuck is editing the 'best music writing of 2004' anthology this paragraph:
Here's a low point though, because I never talk about the low points. I woke up hungover Sunday morning with no memory of Saturday night past 11 (what/who I did), and then I came close to screaming and crying because I thought I was in the room alone. It took me a full five minutes or so to realize that Julian was just in the shower and not in another bed somewhere with another girl(s). Took me only about 5 seconds after that to realize I was about to be sick, so I stumbled to the bathroom and managed to get to the toilet and threw up until I was puking bile. Jules standing there in the shower looking down at me and looking dead said "if only I could hide it as well as you do." Then for different reasons I came close to a breakdown and suddenly hated him more than I'd ever hated anything, but he said head up, baby, this shit isn't new to you anymore, you never do anything you don't intend to. So I got over it, as one does, then a smile and a kiss and a fuck and a song and back to normal.

is easily the best thing i've read on the strokes and if that fucking ilx thread on the strokes can make the cut (nevermind the usual awful 60% of whatever makes the cut) then this is a must.

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

That paragraph is straight out of 'The Rules of Attraction'. It's fascinating and only surprising in how boring their lives seem. She is hot, but she also seems like a bit of a recovering goth, as opposed to being a blank 16 yo russian model which is more what I would expect from the lead singer of the strokes, as opposed to dealing with some looney chick who maintains a blog about their relationship.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

babygirl if you read this: we are not laffing at you, we are not laffing with you. we are merely laying your head on our shoulder, stroking (ha!) your hair and whispering 'and then what happened?' and 'everything's gonna be alright', and then slowly nudging your head toward our crotch.

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

today the part of cinniblount will be played by chris carrabba

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

man someone needs to email this link to vincent gallo with the addendum "go get 'em tiger!"

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if Ned only doesn't think this girl is attractive because of the Strokes connection?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

blount wants to rescue her!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Are we going to do that thing where every ILX thread turns into an extended discussion of whether or not various girls are hot? My earlier jokes rely on my belief that she's not particularly hotter than thousands of other girls wandering around Manhattan. Whatever. She seems very normal and not particularly deserving of ridicule, pity, congratulation, or anything much at all.

And I'm not even just saying that because she's sure to track the link over and post on here. I'm saying it because I remember the shameful responses to my "electronic newsletter" during that three magical weeks I spent with Miki from Lush.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, though, the thread is funny but the spirit is mean. Let her be young and free (and moderately hot and/or wealthy and/or compliant).

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing is deserving of ridicule as such...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"This shit with Julian is starting to get to me, I'll admit that. I look at it this way, though. When you're drinking skim milk, it makes you feel like you're doing something good for yourself, even though it doesn't taste that great. What you really want is a nice big ice cream sundae. I'm the ice cream sundae, with whipped cream and a fucking cherry on top. The man has close to zero will power when it comes to anything that's not his music, so I can tell you that he's not going to keep drinking the skim milk without going for the ice cream a lot. Everyone knows the reality of the situation, we just don't talk about it. It's kind of tough, but I'm hanging in there with him. If I think about it, I hate him, but I can't stop this. I don't know. He's manipulating me and I'm happily playing along. It's all good. I'm fucked, but whatever. It's been fun; it's still going to be fun. It's now just REALLY FUCKED UP.

Pretend you're not fucking me, pretend you didn't fall in love with me, I DON'T CARE!! Make it look like you're settling down and going for the safe bet; pretend you feel better about youself. I'll still be around. I'll still let you bang the shit out of me every day of the week, then you can think about how fucked up you are and hate yourself for what you're doing! You're using me, I'm using you.

That's all I can say."

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

wait wait what?

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if Ned only doesn't think this girl is attractive because of the Strokes connection?

No, seriously, I don't find her attractive.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean if anything, based on what little I know of both, she seems like Gear's roommate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"I'm going crazy now; my first love got dumped for ANDY FUCKING RODDICK."

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

er that was an xpost... nabisco you had me for a sec with that miki berenyi thing

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't mock her at all. honestly she sounds sweet and swept up by a life that sounds pretty fucking fun to me (at least the good parts). i'm surprised that she's willing to air it all in public. i wonder if jules knows...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

That last excerpt got me: I think I've had that relationship!

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Less glamorous, though.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

she's pretty mediocre looking, and are we sure this isn't some strange twisted fantasy webpage? I haven't delved too deeply into it...

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

"I'm the ice cream sundae, with whipped cream and a fucking cherry on top"

That last excerpt got me: I think I've had that relationship!

-- nabisco (--...), August 25th, 2004. (later)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

(No, to further the milk metaphor, it was like I was lactose intolerant, and the milk was like "drink me!" and I was like no, no, really, I shouldn't, it'll make me feel bad, but the milk was like "c'mon, c'mon have a drink," and then I would, and then it'd be like "I will never drink milk again" and the milk would be like "yeah, sure, whatever" and so on like that.)

notbisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah she seems sweet and smart (going to columbia soon, maybe ally'll meet her) and her relationship (regardless of the proper nouns) sound better than 80% of the relationships i've been in (95% of which were better than the alternative) so more power to her.

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm excited for her too. I think she's having fun. She's in for heartbreak at some point, but it seems like she's fully aware of that.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Going to Columbia, you say?

notbisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

and are we sure this isn't some strange twisted fantasy webpage?

To clarify I was talking about ILX

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i mean odds are she'd be in for heartbreak at some point anyhow, better a stroke than some dude in her dorm. odds are this'll circumvent a jamband phase at the very least.

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait wait -- she just graduated from high school?

Also, fact-wise: are there any pictures on there that actually include her and any strokes? Sorta suspect.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Cause I mean geez, just cause yr dad gets on 14-year-old South American models doesn't mean you get a free pass.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

that's what I'm saying xpost

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah she seems sweet and smart

She does? I'm being honest here, I don't sense that at all, and that's actually the big reason I don't see her as attractive much.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

apart from julians singing, i never got the velvets comparisons. as stated above, i always thought of them as being late 70s/early 80s in sound, and just as much, in production.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Well if she's really "Barely Legal" (ho! ho! ho!) then she's probably a little sharper than most. I don't know about "sweet," unless the whole "trying to be all glammy-adult-drama and sorta failing" thing = cute and adorable.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

ned why do you even post in strokes threads anymore? haven't you already used up all the "ehs" you can muster for them??

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Sort of like how when I threaten to kick people's asses they all go, "Aww, yr so cute!"

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Except for Miki from Lush, she understood my power.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a certain sweet irony to her fave bball player being steve nash

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

and a friend of hers is friends with byron leftwich!!! girl is hooked up!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

she's like jville royalty from what i can figure; what's with all the golf photos though?

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

http://espn.go.com/i/magazine/new/steve_nash_cartoon.jpg

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

was miki the one with the orange hair?

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Red hair, yup.

haven't you already used up all the "ehs" you can muster for them??

You didn't revive the thread to talk about the band. ;-) (I clicked because Spencer and I and others were yakking a bit on the tracks poll thread and I thought it might have something to do with that.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm being honest here, I don't sense that at all, and that's actually the big reason I don't see her as attractive much.

Ned, I should have specified above that my question about her attractiveness was only skin deep. That's why I asked it, because I thought you were being a bit harsh about the way she looked. I don't think you can honestly say that if she posted a pic to an ILE "so what do you look like thread", and you didn't know who she was, that you wouldn't complement her.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

You gotta pick a harder venue than that, Spencer.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(Sorry, I'm not going to post on this thread anymore, everything comes out mean and skeezy.)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I kiss you all, including Julian and his barely-legal high school sundae.

mahirsco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

haha - not at all, I really appreciate your comments upthread, I think we're all falling into a bit of a paternalistic trap with this.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer, I'm serious -- she looks unremarkable. *shrug* There ya go.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)
