The best ever bass line is "M Train" by Pylon. Check out "Tension" by The Minutemen. For Raeggae, "Tsen Chung Pen" by U Brown or "555 Dub Street" bu Augustus Pablo

John Walter, Sunday, 8 June 2003 00:48 (twenty-three years ago)

'tribal dawn' - on Mick Karn's 'titles' and Japan's 'sons of pioneers'.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 8 June 2003 06:34 (twenty-three years ago)

A rock answer.

Was "Peaches" by the Stranglers mentioned on this thread (I can't be arsed, but it didn't leap out in a cursory scan)?

David A. (Davant), Sunday, 8 June 2003 07:04 (twenty-three years ago)

(hint: if you don't feel like reading a thread but you wanna see if something's been mentioned, use the Ctrl+F shortcut to search the page)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 8 June 2003 07:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Elvis Presley, "Burnin' Love"
The Who, "The Real Me"

Chris Clark (Chris Clark), Sunday, 8 June 2003 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Sneaker Pimps, "Spin Spin Sugar" (Armand Van Helden rmx)

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Sunday, 8 June 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

JMJ & Richie - Case Closed
Bay B Kane - Quarter to Doom

DigitalDjigit, Sunday, 8 June 2003 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I really want to find the mix of 'We're Ready' that's just the trumpet sample for about 2 minutes then that pulverising bassline alone with some subtle little high hat ticks. It's at the start of the Slimzee mix from Richie Vibe Vee's 1Xtra show - does anyone know it?

ss, Sunday, 8 June 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

another one bites the dust

ron (ron), Sunday, 8 June 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

(Come Up and See Me) Make Me Smile - Duran Duran (b side of The Reflex)

darren (darren), Sunday, 8 June 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

no mention yet of Kevin 'Reese' Saunderson - "Just Another Chance" ?
or Dillinja?

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 8 June 2003 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread should be made up entirely of UKG from the last 2 years.
I'd like to submit Danny Weed's 'Creeper' as best cello -> dirty sub bass segue ever. Who needs a beat when the bass is THIS good?

ss, Sunday, 8 June 2003 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Droppin' Science - Vol.s 2 thru 5

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 8 June 2003 17:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael Henderson "Calypso Frelimo"

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 8 June 2003 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Vincent J Alvis feat Freddi Funkstone - "Body Killin'" (original)

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 8 June 2003 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

hydra - grover washington jr
let's get it on - smif n wessun
war zone - black moon
it is good - burning spear - especially the part where the chorus breaks back into the verse

maybe not 'bassline' but 'bass part':
changeling - dj shadow
airbag - radiohead

which are very similar to me in terms of how the bass is working

ron (ron), Sunday, 8 June 2003 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

wiley seriously has the most fucked up "basslines"...they don't sound the least bit "natural", i can't possibly figure out how you'd "play" them, and they sound like nothing else i've ever heard really

(this post brought to you by scare quotes, inc.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 8 June 2003 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

summertime rolls

ron (ron), Sunday, 8 June 2003 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

gaz (gaz), Monday, 9 June 2003 02:08 (twenty-three years ago)

um, i didn't read them all, but if nobody said "John Wayne Was A Nazi" by MDC than i will say it.

scott seward, Monday, 9 June 2003 02:12 (twenty-three years ago)

"Mind Your Own Business," Delta 5
"Rock On," David Essex
"Vampire," Black Uhuru

All of which are great, but none of which are as great as the greatest bass line of all time, which is "Da Funk."

scott woods (s woods), Monday, 9 June 2003 02:14 (twenty-three years ago)

young marble giants - wurlitzer jukebox

lots of octaving and a freakout in the chorus

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 9 June 2003 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Walking On The Moon by The Police

Daniel (dancity), Monday, 9 June 2003 07:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Darren mentions In Trance As Mission. I remember humming that bassline to myself in the queue for drinks at a cricket match once and the bloke behind me says: Is that In Trance As Mission by Simple Minds? You can imagine the surprised yelping and gasping that ensued.

If nothing else, this anecdote certainly illustrates the distinctive nature of that bassline.

Daniel (dancity), Monday, 9 June 2003 07:10 (twenty-three years ago)

United Grooves Crew ft. God's Gift - Mic Tribute (UGC Remix)
Diana Rakeem (sp?) - Sweeter Than Wine
Richie Boy & DJ Klasse - Madness in the Street
88.3 - Wishing on a Star (Aphrodite Mix)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 9 June 2003 11:50 (twenty-three years ago)

kjlsfd, Monday, 12 January 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"Lucretia My Reflection" -- The Sisters of Mercy
"Ceremony" -- New Order

rainman (rainman), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Best Macca bassline = the break-it-down in "...Monkey".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ceremony" -- New Order

I believe you are mistaking the bass for the guitar (or I'm calling you out on an uninspired choice). Great song nonetheless.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't believe no one said "the trooper" by iron maiden.

sean marvin (williamtell), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"Mrs. Gredenko" by Police
"Down on the Corner" by Creedence Clearwater Revival
"Statues" by Husker Du
"Come As You Are" by Nirvana*
"Orion" by Metallica
"Here Comes Your Man" by Pixies
"Lovely Day" by Bill Withers
"Couldn't Get It Right" by Climax Blues Band
"Jump Into the Fire" by Nilsson

There are so, so many R&B and Disco songs that still amaze me. Too many to list. It's amazing that as bass-oriented Dance songs are, the bass players aren't internationally idolized like their Metal guitar-playing counterparts.

* Actually, just add every song from Bleach to this list.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 12 January 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"Come As You Are" by Nirvana
Oh, no .. everybody duck.. Here comes Alex ....

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 12 January 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Coffee and TV by Blur must be mentioned (I know Mr. James has already been mentioned, but he's really one of the best young rock bassists around)

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 12 January 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

'Young'?! wtf? Did he pay you for that?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 12 January 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

1. how the hell does it take to #26 to get to "good times"? what kind of joke is that. after all, it's the bassline that launched a 1,000 other basslines.

2. i'll submit gq's "disco nights" to the thread as well.

seanp (seanp), Monday, 12 January 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Guns of Brixton - The Clash
Mountain Song - Jane's Addiction
Rescue Me - Fontella Bass
bass part from the coda of "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 12 January 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Chic "Everybody Dance"
Yes "Heart of the Sunrise’
Beatles, "Hey Bulldog"
New Order "Transmission"
Freda Payne, "Band of Gold"
Assorted songs by Morphine

Ian Grey (Ian_G), Monday, 12 January 2004 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

My current fav Morphine bassline is "Rope On Fire".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 12 January 2004 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"'Young'?! wtf? Did he pay you for that?"
I only used that word because compared to some of the older veterans of the bass, (for example, Sir Paul, who technically still is "around") he IS considered young.

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 12 January 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)
