We've been wanting to feature this all year and were delighted to hear that dance music's man of the moment Matt Jagger will release it in the UK on the Europa label. The elements are the Police Every Breath You Take guitarline, a rap that is just the right side of cheesy, and the Beats International chorus. Does it work? We think so - and it's an engrossing listen finding out. It's an Italian production from 1997 that did very little back then but its time has come. We heard about it when it start to hog the upper reaches of Shazam's German chart. It went on to spend three weeks at #5 on the German singles chart and it should be a pan- European smash.

yeah that came out during one of my u.k. sojourns. late '89 was a good time for the pop charts there.

Her phrasing generally is spot on isn't it? She seems to know how to lift the lyrics into sounding really natural & spontaneous, comfortable even. Lily swings, which is actually pretty refreshing compared with a lot of ILM canon blitzkreig pop which tries like buggery to impress you into sensual submission yet ends up simply uptight for all the effort.

so... is the NME going to jump on the Lily bandwagon?

The perpetual return of Lily Allen is quite disheartening.

Tennis/Madeline is a fucking incredible 5-or-so minutes.
Somehow as good as everyone is saying it is.

I spent the whole album alternating between gasping and grinning. so many great melodies. astonishing production, too.

Yeah, this album is quite something. I really didn't want to miss a single lyric on here when I listened to it for the first time.

The lyric writing is so concise and crafted that the repeat choruses often undermine the effect. She could have pinkpantheressed it, let each sketch hit, then move on to the next vignette. They’re so contained in their construction that the overall effect accreting, as another facet turns to the reader, doesn’t need the breather / pause for reflection

I love this. Lily Allen always does her own best backing vocals and the production/arrangements are terrific— this kind of widescreen fun-production is the best suit for such lyrical content

This album reminds me more than a little of those videos about like railway technology where the script is done as a singsongy AI pop song, except in this case it’s Lily Allen autofiction

20 years ago, I was not paying attention when she made her entrance into pop music, but I noticed when listening to her shit 10 year ago that she resembled R Kelly in her ability to shape the vernacular into lyric form, a practice which still isn't at all common. She certainly does just so on this record…
