It's reminding me of a slightly more credible Jem now :(
Not so good.

You see, backlash even before the record is out!

someone let this mitya out! (mitya), Thursday, 27 April 2006 20:18 (twenty years ago)

It's better than Jem (rofl @ that recommendation), but I'm more keeping a cheek on the fence that I am backlashing ;)

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 27 April 2006 20:25 (twenty years ago)

i thought this was gonna be an e-street team thread. she's the featured artist on myspace right now.

it probably is

She is, I think, unstoppable.

I think she's fab, btw.

lilly allen makes me wanna puke... she's a fucking dick.. her myspace profile looks like an add for go airlines.,

endoftheline, Thursday, 27 April 2006 23:00 (twenty years ago)

She's absolutely awesome. Whether she's 100% authentic or totally fabricated, I'm still impressed. Her mixtape was really sweet and quite clever I though.

("thought")

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 28 April 2006 00:40 (twenty years ago)

I love that mix too, not looking forward to reading even more rubbish about the "myspace effect" though, although the Keith Allen connection might wise some people up to the fact that she's not exactly lacking for industry connections. Or access to her dad's record collection...

fandango (fandango), Friday, 28 April 2006 00:49 (twenty years ago)

She's playing Notting Hill Arts Club on the fourth of May and the three following Thursdays. I might go along. If any other ILXors moght, then give me an email, as I can't imagine any of the pitifully small circle of Londoners I've met thus far will be up for it:

live: Lily Allen (pictured), Big Roe, Ashok
decks: Lily Allen

Tonight Lily Allen is starting her Yoyo May residency. For an (almost) 21 year-old artist, she has been getting around somewhat! Freshly pictured for Vogue Magazine her music is sweet, fun and bringing together a whole host of influences. Lily is rumoured to be on Top of the Pops later this summer, so do come and see her close up while you still can before she goes Number 1. Especially since these are her first ever live appearances! Can't get any better now, can it....

Every Thursday, 6pm-2am, £5
NO TICKET PRE-SALES PLEASE COME DOWN EARLY

You'll Never Put a Better Bit of Butter On Your Knife (Dada), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:17 (twenty years ago)

LDN = damn catchy

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

She's spammed here before, and I'm sure this is her brother or cousin or something, but whatever. I listened (so the spam worked), I thought it was ok. Not my thing. The original tunes were catchy, but the "mixtape" on her site was garbage -- no mixing skills whatsoever.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 20:34 (twenty years ago)

By the way, calling an artist no one's ever heard of "this summer's biggest hit," his not the most effective way of cloaking your spam.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 20:35 (twenty years ago)

the mixing on the mixtape is pretty bad. but the song selection's nice enough.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 21:01 (twenty years ago)

She's absolutely awesome. Whether she's 100% authentic or totally fabricated, I'm still impressed. Her mixtape was really sweet and quite clever I though.

I like that we've set this dichotomy up early.

deeej, Tuesday, 2 May 2006 21:09 (twenty years ago)

What if she's 75% authentic but 25% fabricated, like she's got a cyborg arm?

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 03:15 (twenty years ago)

Anybody got a tracklist for the mixtape (which I like fine; it's sort of like the mixtapes I make: bunch of songs I like)? This is what I get so far:

(1) Lily Allen "LDN," (2) Dizzee Rascal "Fix Up, Look Sharp," (3) some woman who isn't the S.O.S. band or Deborah Cox or Shabba Ranks or Rebel Princess doing a fetching reggae version of "Just Be Good To Me," (4) Lily Allen doing another of her songs, (5) Ludacris "The Potion," (6) Some Wu Tang–related thing (ODB? Clinton Sparks?), (7) some dancehall guy, (8) another dancehall guy, (9) Montana Slim? "My Swiss Moonlight Lullaby"? (10) Creedence Clearwater Revival "Born on the Bayou," (11) Lee Dorsey? "Get Out My Life Woman," (12) Rod Stewart/Faces "Stay With Me," (13) Squeeze? "Up the Junction"? (14) a Lily Allen original, (15) some grimish thing, (16) Specials "Friday Night, Saturday Morning," (17) some funky dubby thing, (18) some sweet French Europop thing, (19) Janet Kay? "Silly Games," (20) another Lily Allen original, (21) some junglish dancehall thing.

By the way, calling an artist no one's ever heard of "this summer's biggest hit" is not the most effective way of cloaking your spam.

Frank Kogan, this summer's biggest hit. (I've been spamming here daily.)

(And more people have heard of her than have heard of me. She's getting 30,000 plays a day on her Myspace page.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 05:41 (twenty years ago)

"(3) some woman who isn't the S.O.S. band or Deborah Cox or Shabba Ranks or Rebel Princess doing a fetching reggae version of "Just Be Good To Me,""

I haven't listened to the mix-tape, but perhaps this would be the Beats International version?

If she used the Smith & Mighty Remix of the same I would instantly agree to carry her children.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 05:58 (twenty years ago)

it's beats international, but i don't think it's a remix, just the single edit. the odb track is "pop shots." the french tune is vanessa paradis, "joe le taxi" (great song title, damn) which i think means i need to hear more vanessa paradis.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 06:25 (twenty years ago)

weirdly i received a mailout from EMI a few weeks back which mentioned Lily (she's on Regal imprint) - saying 'someone you are going to hear a lot more of in the next few months' - to which i glossed over and moved on.

now i find myself downloading the mixtape and wishing i had responded to the email to get a chance on the ultra limited 7".

pah.

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 07:17 (twenty years ago)

I don't. I find the mixtape link not working, that's what I do.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 07:23 (twenty years ago)

also - anyone see the Mark Ronson link in her myspace - this style of mixtape has markings of him all over it .. is he involved ?

xpost - mark - weird - i just grabbed it without any problems a few minutes ago ..

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 07:37 (twenty years ago)

so... is Ronson her Diplo then?

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 07:41 (twenty years ago)

ah ha - tis confirmed in her blog @ myspace ..
"so , I've been working with mark ronson on the album for the last week "
things become more clear ..
have to admit, i am loving this.

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 07:48 (twenty years ago)

Without looking, I don't think Ronson's involved in the mixtape. I think they discovered each other fairly recently; he's only just now become one of her Myspace friends, though she did fly to NY so that she could DJ a club night with him (I think she was going to be in the U.S. anyway, he wasn't the only reason for the flight). I like it when people I've heard of show up as people's Myspace friends. Skye Sweetnam got a fellow named "Angry Samoan" early on, and recently got M.I.A.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 11:31 (twenty years ago)

Beats International would seem right for "Just Be Good to Me" (in fact, I might once have owned that track; I remember a dub version called "Just Be Dub to Me"). Vanessa Paradis once made an LP that I consider a candidate for "Worst Album Ever Made" (it had a Velvets cover - "I'm Waiting for My Man," iirc - which was one of the less moribund tracks), but I've heard good tracks by her since then.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 11:36 (twenty years ago)

She's the Jonah Goldberg of pop.

The Mercury Krueger (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 11:56 (twenty years ago)

I've not heard of Jonah Goldberg; he would be the Lily Allen of what?

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 12:47 (twenty years ago)

ah so she's this year's MIA! I am interested in hearing her again.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 12:51 (twenty years ago)

She needs to dress a lot more poorly to catch up to MIA.

The Mercury Krueger (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 13:04 (twenty years ago)

she was a guest on mark ronson's radio show on east village radio a couple of weeks ago. doesn't appear to be available as on demand download/listen anymore though. playlist here.

i think she's great...

(jg) ((jg)), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 14:27 (twenty years ago)

Tim: I would instantly agree to carry her children.

more than a few of us are going to feel like we've found a soulmate. dawning realisation over the past week: she is THAT good

Janet Kay, Ragga Twins, Ian Dury, Lily Allen...

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 14:30 (twenty years ago)

finally suss'd she reminds me of Polystyrene

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 14:38 (twenty years ago)

frank, the beats intl track is actually called "dub be good to me" (norman cook, so clever). i love that tune, have a cassingle of it somewhere. and yeah i'd never been too interested in v.paradis, but then i'd never heard any of her early french stuff either.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 17:04 (twenty years ago)

at least one of the grimish things is More Fire Crew - Oi! I think the junglish track at the end is this http://www.discogs.com/release/157316 but I might be wrong (don't have the mix to hand right now) and it could be that bloke who caused a lot of fuss with that other hiccupy "in-in-credible" pop/jungle tune when it all kicked off (by claiming he invented the whole genre hehe).

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 17:38 (twenty years ago)

On a "Just be Good to Me" tip, be sure to keep an ear out for this record, which is one of the worst I've ever heard:

"Just Be Good To Me" by Karmah
Release: 10 July (tbc)
We've been wanting to feature this all year and were delighted to hear that dance music's man of the moment Matt Jagger will release it in the UK on the Europa label. The elements are the Police Every Breath You Take guitarline, a rap that is just the right side of cheesy, and the Beats International chorus. Does it work? We think so - and it's an engrossing listen finding out. It's an Italian production from 1997 that did very little back then but its time has come. We heard about it when it start to hog the upper reaches of Shazam's German chart. It went on to spend three weeks at #5 on the German singles chart and it should be a pan- European smash.

My mum in Feb 1988 when Vanessa Paradis was on Top of the Pops for "Joe le Taxi" (No.3 in the UK): "I bet it's just paedophiles buying this record."

("Dub Be God To Me" was No.1 in the UK in Feb 1990.)

Bloke who caused a lot of fuss = M-Beat featuring General Levy "Incredible"

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

My mum in Feb 1988 when Vanessa Paradis was on Top of the Pops for "Joe le Taxi" (No.3 in the UK): "I bet it's just paedophiles buying this record."

haha, tell it to france gall.

("Dub Be God To Me" was No.1 in the UK in Feb 1990.)

yeah that came out during one of my u.k. sojourns. late '89 was a good time for the pop charts there.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Finally got a chance to listen to some of her songs outside of that mixtape and I'm even more sure I like this a lot.

Her phrasing generally is spot on isn't it? She seems to know how to lift the lyrics into sounding really natural & spontaneous, comfortable even. Lily swings, which is actually pretty refreshing compared with a lot of ILM canon blitzkreig pop which tries like buggery to impress you into sensual submission yet ends up simply uptight for all the effort.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 4 May 2006 08:19 (twenty years ago)

xpost - thanks Raw Patrick

so... is the NME going to jump on the Lily bandwagon?

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 4 May 2006 08:45 (twenty years ago)

she is KEITH ALLEN'S DAUGHTER.

Somehow as good as everyone is saying it is.

I spent the whole album alternating between gasping and grinning. so many great melodies. astonishing production, too.

Yeah, this album is quite something. I really didn't want to miss a single lyric on here when I listened to it for the first time.

kitchen person, Tuesday, 28 October 2025 00:36 (seven months ago)

The lyric writing is so concise and crafted that the repeat choruses often undermine the effect. She could have pinkpantheressed it, let each sketch hit, then move on to the next vignette. They’re so contained in their construction that the overall effect accreting, as another facet turns to the reader, doesn’t need the breather / pause for reflection

fall of the house of urrsher (sic), Tuesday, 28 October 2025 03:48 (seven months ago)

I love this. Lily Allen always does her own best backing vocals and the production/arrangements are terrific— this kind of widescreen fun-production is the best suit for such lyrical content

mixed martial farts (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 30 October 2025 22:29 (seven months ago)

This album reminds me more than a little of those videos about like railway technology where the script is done as a singsongy AI pop song, except in this case it’s Lily Allen autofiction

Tracer Hand, Friday, 31 October 2025 13:05 (seven months ago)

20 years ago, I was not paying attention when she made her entrance into pop music, but I noticed when listening to her shit 10 year ago that she resembled R Kelly in her ability to shape the vernacular into lyric form, a practice which still isn't at all common. She certainly does just so on this record…

is there an animus towards her on the part of english people? please help us unpack this, english ilxors…

The discourse around this album on reddit is really stupid. Many people trying to legislate the morality without appreciating the human story at the heart of the album. A lot of comments like, “well she cheated on her first husband so I don’t feel bad for her,” as if the point is to take sides.
