extreme drunken driving

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

how come it's the Canadian Press that got that bone-chilling straight-on jailhouse photo?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I just woke up... Where's Glen?

Lurlene (Dave225), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
should i go see glen campbell next friday? like performing live?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 23 July 2005 05:50 (twenty years ago)

Yes.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Saturday, 23 July 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Seconded. I don't think you will regret it. Not sure what his voice is like these days, but he's one of the best pickers out there.

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 24 July 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

ok!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 24 July 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

New album album of covers, Meet Glen Campbell. Hmmmn.
Tracklisting:

1. 'Jesus' (Velvet Underground)
2. 'All I Want Is You' (U2)
3. 'Times Like These' (Foo Fighters)
4. 'Grow Old With Me' (John Lennon)
5. 'Angel Dream' (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers)
6. 'Sadly Beautiful' (The Replacements)
7. 'Sing' (Travis)
8. 'These Days' (Jackson Browne)
9. 'Walls (Circus)' (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers)
10. 'Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)' (Green Day)

etc, Thursday, 1 May 2008 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

I like the idea of him doing 'Walls'. The tracklist doesn't make me cringe...but what's his voice like these days?

VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 1 May 2008 04:44 (eighteen years ago)

VU+Lennon+Replacements songs = thumbs up
"Times Like These"+"Sing"+Green Day song = who the hell suggested these?

Z S, Thursday, 1 May 2008 04:48 (eighteen years ago)

I'm v.curious about the Green Day cover - attempts to picture it in my head end up with more of a Johnny Cash vibe - is this his answer to all those latterday Cash records, or has he/other country veterans already done that?

etc, Thursday, 1 May 2008 05:13 (eighteen years ago)

Really looking forward to hearing "These Days".

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 1 May 2008 06:45 (eighteen years ago)

Oh my God. This is going to be incredible! I am so down with this. Sadly Beautiful is the one I want to hear first.

I always knew he should get the Johnny Cash treatment. When does this come out?

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 1 May 2008 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

this sounds like it could be really good but I hate that fuckin Green Day song so so bad

J0hn D., Thursday, 1 May 2008 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

this sounds pretty awful, but then again i'm totally sick of these kinds of albums.

omar little, Thursday, 1 May 2008 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

Glen Campbell was in True Grit???

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Thursday, 1 May 2008 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

three months pass...

3 songs are streaming at the glencampbellshow.com

Without doubt, the single most anticipated record of the summer, perhaps the decade. It's got the potential to bring the music industry to its knees, people! Kneel before Glen campbell.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 1 August 2008 05:46 (seventeen years ago)

Glen is back, baby. Yes.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 1 August 2008 05:49 (seventeen years ago)

Listening to it now! He´s giving it the Johnny Cash treatment, with all these covers. Except it doesn´t sound sparse like Cash, it´s rocky and jingle-jangly. Had much rather seen him do new songs of his own, but hey, it's really nice to hear his voice again.

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 1 August 2008 10:51 (seventeen years ago)

Thankfully, based on the streaming tracks this is nothing at all like the "Johnny Cash treatment." There's nothing ironic about it, he's not imposing himself on these songs, they're more just like straight-up covers which is kinda nice.

Except these three songs are lame to begin with.

Hadrian VIII, Friday, 1 August 2008 13:34 (seventeen years ago)

There are some more interesting songs on the new record that aren't streaming. Sadly Beautiful by the Replacements and Velvet Underground Jesus are two.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

His version of Jackson Browne's (& Nico's) "These Days" is easily the best thing I've heard all year. "Jesus" is perhaps the 2nd best thing I've heard all year. The rest of the LP is less giant-killing, but still pretty impressive. His voice is still a thing of great power & beauty.

harveyw, Friday, 1 August 2008 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

he actually does U2 pretty well, too. a return to the Al DeLoryisms of yore, right down to cinematic sweep of strings and some terse Glen guitar solos where all he does is play the melody. Not so hot on the Westerberg tune and of course that fucking Green Day song is the "Send in the Clowns" of, yeecchh. Pretty good record.

whisperineddhurt, Friday, 1 August 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

this album is too Middle of the Road too be really good,( but it could be worse, too)

Ghost On The Canvas sees Campbell capping his brilliant career with one of his most moving and energized works to date, a powerfully emotional song cycle that sees him accompanied by a truly dazzling line-up of songwriters and musicians. Among the tunesmiths contributing original songs to the collection are such modern luminaries as Paul Westerberg, Jakob Dylan, Robert Pollard, and Teddy Thompson, backed by a roster of players that includes Chris Isaak, Dick Dale, Billy Corgan, Brian Setzer, Rick Nielsen, Roger Manning, and The Dandy Warhols. The album is produced by Julian Raymond, who also co-wrote a number of new songs with Campbell.

curmudgeon, Monday, 22 August 2011 18:38 (fourteen years ago)

Jakob Dylan is a modern luminary? I always look forward to new Glen Campbell though.

¯\(°_o)/¯ (Nicole), Monday, 22 August 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

That's from an e-mailed publicist's press sheet

curmudgeon, Monday, 22 August 2011 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

I figured as much, Jakob Dylan really sticks out like a sore thumb here.

I never knew he was in the Beach Boys, but I've never claimed to know much about Glen Campbell or the Beach Boys.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 06:01 (fourteen years ago)

Guys, this album is pretty fucking good.

thank got forks showed up (forksclovetofu), Friday, 2 September 2011 04:31 (fourteen years ago)

It's a goodbye album and it's real emotionally charged.

thank got forks showed up (forksclovetofu), Friday, 2 September 2011 04:31 (fourteen years ago)

really? i'd kind of written it off along with everything GC has done since he sobered up.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Friday, 2 September 2011 04:33 (fourteen years ago)

maybe i'm an old softie but i just gave it a quick spotify listen and i thought it was lovely and am looking forward to listening again.

thank got forks showed up (forksclovetofu), Friday, 2 September 2011 04:35 (fourteen years ago)

Meet Glen Campbell was also really great. especially his version of These Days

Jamie_ATP, Friday, 2 September 2011 09:24 (fourteen years ago)

i think his voice sounds not-good lately.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:05 (fourteen years ago)

that "ghost on the canvas" track has been playlisted pretty heavily over the last few weeks on R2, and you know, it never fails to make me have one of those 'ooooh this is good .. moments

mark e, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 07:55 (fourteen years ago)

I was surprised by this, I really like and it is very emotionally charged with his mind slipping away from him. Will this have a vinyl release? I don't really buy cds much these days?

JacobSanders, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 08:01 (fourteen years ago)

three months pass...

so is anyone catching the farewell tour? there are shows scheduled through MAY. kinda makes me queasy.

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 17:33 (fourteen years ago)

Caught him in London I was very happy to see him again, but he has definitely deteriorated since even 2 years ago which was the last time I saw him. Not in voice or guitar playing quality, but there are some awkward moments where he'll forget if he's played a track already or repeat a joke.... he's being backed by his kids though who keep him on track, but that just adds to the sadness even more.

and Glen Campbell is fucking sad music already. all things combined it was ULTRA SAD MIDDLE AGED MEN AND ME CLOSE TO TEARS THROUGHOUT.

setlist for this tour is a variation on this:

Gentle on My Mind
Galveston
By the Time I Get to Phoenix
Try a Little Kindness
Walls
Where's the Playground Susie
Dreams of the Everyday Housewife
It's Only Make Believe
True Grit
Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream)
Dueling Banjos
Rollin' in My Sweet Baby's Arms
The Moon's a Harsh Mistress
Southern Nights
In My Arms
Wichita Lineman
Rhinestone Cowboy

ENCORE

It's Your Amazing Grace
A Better Place

when he started The Moon's A Harsh Mistress a guy below me let out a moan that was 45% pleasure 55% pain of the SADNESS. but yeah, you'll regret it if you don't go. it's Glen Motherfucking Campbell.

Jamie_ATP, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 17:48 (fourteen years ago)

this was near to my top ten for the year.
i'd love to see him live and i'm afraid i've waited too long. calling ticketmaster now.

walking liquidity crisis (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

no...
eternal regret

Thug Luftwaffle (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 8 January 2012 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

Yup.

Going to give this last album a listen. From the description it sounds like it is going to be something like the Arthur Alexander comeback album.

Fanfare for the History Mayne (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 8 January 2012 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

Freedom, Friday, 11 August 2017 08:31 (eight years ago)

re the AC interview, Glen Campbell's Goodtime Seder woulda been a nice special.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 11 August 2017 14:21 (eight years ago)

re his bio, someone was just telling me how he was apparently older than a lot of the other wrecking crew guys. He had been part of his family band for so many years and was just playing in other pick up bands in Phoenix before somebody invited him out LA, or convinced him to go west.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 August 2017 14:36 (eight years ago)

Wait, switch that around. He was one of the younger members of The Wrecking Crew, but even then he had still spent all these years as a child guitar prodigy just playing in bands in Arizona and wherever before going session. Maybe it's in the Blaine book, but I guess Tommy would get all the technical stuff, because he was a legendary reader, but Glen would get the more rock and roll guitar stuff.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 August 2017 14:40 (eight years ago)

He didn't make it till he was over 30.

Tonight I Cut My Temple Teeth (Tom D.), Friday, 11 August 2017 14:42 (eight years ago)

Maybe it's in the Blaine book, but I guess Tommy would get all the technical stuff, because he was a legendary reader, but Glen would get the more rock and roll guitar stuff.

Think I read that as well. Also the Motown version, in which Joe Messina got the technical stuff- sight reading, doubling lines with Jamerson- whereas Robert White would play soulful intros with his thumb and Eddie Willis would play the wilder stuff.

Barkis Garvey (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 August 2017 14:52 (eight years ago)

Same with Jimmy Page. I forget the name of the other, older guitarist, but between the two of them they handled tons of London sessions. The older guy would often get the jazzier technical stuff, Jimmy Page would get the rockier stuff, and whichever one wasn't handling electric would play acoustic. Though sometimes they would swap electric/acoustic duties, just for kicks.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 August 2017 15:13 (eight years ago)

Big Jim Sullivan? Jimmy P was known as Little Jim.

Keep hearing about the great Roger Miller stories he had, but as far as I know not one actual story has surfaced.

Weird Jimmy Webb comparing him to Paul McCartney.

Finally saw the documentary... some of the editing annoyed me, cutting into songs for the talking heads, but obviously it's an honest tearjerker.

Big fan of his voice and guitar playing of course, but some hits just never gelled with me. Now I am giving them another chance.

Al Green Explores Your Mind Gardens (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 2 February 2024 17:50 (two years ago)

Such as
“Dreams of the Everyday Housewife”

Al Green Explores Your Mind Gardens (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 2 February 2024 17:50 (two years ago)

Or
“True Grit”

Al Green Explores Your Mind Gardens (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 2 February 2024 17:50 (two years ago)

The latter is pretty good and was a number one country hit in Canada.

Al Green Explores Your Mind Gardens (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 2 February 2024 17:53 (two years ago)

Even
“Gentle on My Mind”

Al Green Explores Your Mind Gardens (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 2 February 2024 17:54 (two years ago)

This last being the theme of the Goodtime Hour, I must have heard it dozens of times if not hundreds but usually kind of tuned it out.

Al Green Explores Your Mind Gardens (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 2 February 2024 17:55 (two years ago)

Even something like
“Rhinestone Cowboy”

Al Green Explores Your Mind Gardens (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 2 February 2024 18:00 (two years ago)

Which I previously dismissed as some kind of novelty song.

Al Green Explores Your Mind Gardens (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 2 February 2024 18:01 (two years ago)

Or
“Southern Nights”
despite Allen Toussaint

Al Green Explores Your Mind Gardens (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 2 February 2024 18:02 (two years ago)

I will probably get dinged for not liking these songs all along.

Al Green Explores Your Mind Gardens (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 2 February 2024 18:03 (two years ago)

And I am still working on
“Honey, Come Back”

Al Green Explores Your Mind Gardens (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 2 February 2024 18:03 (two years ago)

Which was a pretty big hit and written by Jimmy Webb! Who knew?
