''Julio in "can dish it out but can't take it" SHOCKAH!!!''

I deal in facts. you deal in myths.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Going back to the ULU show in 1990, Colm's drumming was fucking breathtaking. And in such heat. The walls were literally melting. I think that Sonic Boom supported in solo guise - the usual indie liggers of the day were propping up the bar (hello Miki!).

Robert Moore (treble), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Snowpony, I think. 'Snowplough' is a million times better, though.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Shields has been christened "Bagpuss" by the Primal Scream clan. Anyone know the origin of this? A friend of mine always said that MBV gave off the appearance of being unwashed and slightly smelly.

Robert Moore (treble), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio I gotta say:

free jazz/improv has a small but committed audience. ppl who are into indie go into management.

seems roughly equal to "I will spin it positively for the subculture I like, and negatively for the one I don't" - if indie is "dead," then free jazz has decomposed. I happen to like both so whateveh, but I just wanted to say.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I like both too (well, not everything, its a case by case basis). I was just playing around.

(but actually, indie is not that much of a 'subculture' anymore whereas 60s jazz and free improv (there is a distinction here btw), despite being older, has more of that, but that doesn't matter)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

colm still plays with hope sandoval and if i'm not completely mistaken he and she are married and both live in berkeley.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

they live near berkeley in kensington.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Hope Sandoval was hanging with William Reid, or is that mouldy old corn?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, this thread is turning into paparazzi press!

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Charlie, yer gossip is about ten years out of date!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 07:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

With all the MBV dropping on ILM and the gaze thing and the fact that Kevin did several songs on Lost In Translation I would hope so. I hope so.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Kevin Shields and Ned Raggett are slowly merging into one being:

Curt1s, Curt1s - be careful what you wish for!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

That joke has been made several times now on many threads! First by me I think. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

He loves cheese.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

A'right then, Ned. You've recorded you 'Ecstasy & Wine' now, obviously. When is yer 'Isn't anything' due?

About Me:
You may have heard of my band, My Bloody Valentine. Many critics have written about us in very flowery terms. I don't think I understood what they were saying in those reviews half the time. That guy from Phish loves me guitar sounds though. Do me a favor and buy my Lost in Translation soundtrack. Island Records isn't helping me out much these days. Also kids, don't forget to buy our box set that's coming out in early '04.

Who I Want to Meet:
Great recording effects designers, more film directors, those with good weed, record labels who understand my fondness for expensive food and all of the time I like to spend in and out of the studio. Just remember... I NO LONGER DO REMIXES!

do you people really think he has time for anything else¿
surely he has found his true calling.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 29 April 2005 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

WHOA.

"The Coral Sea 0 Text: Patti Smith Music: Patti Smith, Kevin Shields, Cat Power (Queen Elizabeth Hall, 22 June)"

I am so FUCKING there.

box.of.rox, Friday, 29 April 2005 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Now furiously googling for cheap flights to London.

box.of.rox, Friday, 29 April 2005 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure whatever it is, it'll be good. :-) Pity I'll miss it by two weeks!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

what is this exactly?

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It's this thing.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

you would sit through the whole of horses to see kevin shields eat some pie? that's dedication.

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll have to ask him about this if I can get him on the phone soon -- supposed to talk for the "Loveless" book I hope to finish in two weeks.

Ohh shit should I start a thread here trawling for questions here for Mr. Shields, or is that redundant?

I tried trawling through here for ideas for the book a year ago and it all just seemed so redundant to type "Loveless" in the search engine, since almost every single thread came up! Hah.

What I REALLY need is help tracking down any of the people who worked on the album (esp. any of the 57 engineers) now that I got my "high quality" (hah) VOIP on and can make free phone calls to the UK...

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost
What on earth do you mean, "sit through"? I fucking LOVE Horses. All the more reason.

box.of.rox, Friday, 29 April 2005 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ohh shit should I start a thread here trawling for questions here for Mr. Shields, or is that redundant?" - The most obvious questions seem so sadly unanswerable..

I'm greatly interested in your book, Michael. Do you have a title for it?

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ohh sorry to assume everyone knows I'm doing this, hah -- first Mr. Keenan was supposed to do it then he had to bail, and I've taken a few months more than I was supposed to to write the thing -- but somehow that's all fitting given the topic, right? That's what I tell myself anyway!

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

you've spoken to mcgee already?

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope, put mutltiple requests in but never heard back! I dunno if he doesn't want to talk or maybe my contact info is bogus? I'll keep trying.

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

You asked for it. You've dreamed of it. Now finally, together, for one night only: Steve Earle and Patti Smith (Royal Festival Hall, 19)!!!!

john'n'chicago, Friday, 29 April 2005 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"horses" is a peice of shit

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean "piece"? In any case, I do not agree, obviously.

Glad to hear that the 33-1/3 book on Loveless is well under way -- been waiting for that one. Sorry, can't think of any good questions off the top of my head, only idiotic/boring ones.

box.of.rox, Friday, 29 April 2005 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Question one: To Here Knows When...HOW?

Question two: Really?

The Father of Honky-Crunk (Matt Chesnut), Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah...piece

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahahah XD this killed me. Let me try that again: Ned, would you happen to have a longer review of the book? Is your little blurb the whole of your review of just a piece of it?

Paul, yeah, I've noticed that - since there's been so little news lately, it's been a lot of shitposting. I'm also surprised there's no mention of the book because that sub is chock full of devoted Kevin fanbois and fangirls (as mentioned earlier - along the lines of "does anyone know where I can buy Kevin's holey jumper")

Milica Bogdanović, Friday, 24 October 2025 19:26 (seven months ago)

Is your little blurb the whole of your review

yes, that's what Ned was saying

sleeve, Friday, 24 October 2025 19:35 (seven months ago)

and more to the point, they are not the same - they are mutually exclusive

sleeve, Friday, 24 October 2025 19:36 (seven months ago)

Both indie bookstores I checked with have it listed with a December 2, 2025 pub date here in the States. Maybe it's quiet because that subreddit is more US based?

better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 24 October 2025 19:52 (seven months ago)

could’ve read the whole damn book by now ffs

brimstead, Friday, 24 October 2025 19:54 (seven months ago)

bored by endless ecstasy (anagram), Wednesday, 19 November 2025 02:02 (six months ago)

The original venue was supposed to be a little 250 capacity club... guess that was a fever-dream.

henry s, Wednesday, 19 November 2025 22:58 (six months ago)

reportedly no new material premiered but there was a live debut

ufo, Thursday, 20 November 2025 05:37 (six months ago)

There's no new material because the two albums that were meant to be released in 2016 and have been being "finished off" ever since don't exist. Still can't wait to see them in Manchester next week :)

that mustardless plate (Bill A), Thursday, 20 November 2025 13:00 (six months ago)

Shame they changed the location. The National Stadium is a truly terrible venue

Number None, Thursday, 20 November 2025 16:02 (six months ago)

Shame they changed the location. The National Stadium is a truly terrible venue

Was it supposed to be somewhere else? I completely missed it, but I’m seeing them on Saturday.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Thursday, 20 November 2025 17:32 (six months ago)

Well that's the word on the street

It seemed to sell out pretty much as soon as the email went out but then a load more tickets ended up getting released

Sounds like there were issues getting into the venue and with the sound too

Number None, Thursday, 20 November 2025 18:16 (six months ago)

Doesn’t surprise me. It was built for boxing, not for music, despite the decades of gigs that have been there.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Thursday, 20 November 2025 18:35 (six months ago)

would love to see "off your face" footage 🥵

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 20 November 2025 19:33 (six months ago)

Off Your Face is such a great song I almost regret not getting tickets for next week, but I want to protect my hearing.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Friday, 21 November 2025 20:00 (six months ago)

was gonna say bring a change of jorts for when kevin hits that brown note but the word is that they've turned it down to around 120 db during the noise wall

Milica Bogdanović, Tuesday, 2 December 2025 00:12 (six months ago)

Yeah, in that Pitchfork article it talked about listening without earplugs and I cannot imagine that when I saw them during the last big tour.

Cow_Art, Tuesday, 2 December 2025 00:17 (six months ago)

I didn't wear earplugs the times I saw them in the early 90's (I was young and dumb) but they probably weren't as loud then. I hope?

henry s, Tuesday, 2 December 2025 13:24 (six months ago)

I didn’t notice anyone without earplugs when I saw them. I briefly took mine out a few times just to get a sense of what it was like and it was like a majestic reciprocating saw screaming in and out of my eardrums. When I saw Swans I didn’t wear earplugs and regretted it, I think it did some damage. It wasn’t anywhere near MBV.

I brought a noise freak friend who wasn’t familiar with them. He worked in a metal grinding shop. He was irritated that he HAD to wear earplugs when he normally wouldn’t.

Cow_Art, Tuesday, 2 December 2025 13:50 (six months ago)

four months pass...

"Loveless" has been missing from many (all?) streaming services for months ...

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 12 April 2026 19:49 (one month ago)

I noticed that too when a playlist I had skipped over a track. Not surprisingly, fans have uploaded all the tracks on YouTube, but still puzzling.

birdistheword, Sunday, 12 April 2026 20:47 (one month ago)

Kevin's gonna roll out his own version of PONO

Serfin' USA (sleeve), Sunday, 12 April 2026 20:47 (one month ago)

They're all still on Spotify for me (in NZ)

nate woolls, Sunday, 12 April 2026 22:19 (one month ago)

On Tidal in the UK at least.

Dan Worsley, Sunday, 12 April 2026 22:33 (one month ago)

I guess it's merely a (territorial) rights issue than a sign of something happening with the back catalog.

birdistheword, Sunday, 12 April 2026 23:55 (one month ago)

Makes me ponder exactly how long Loveless (Shields Version) would take to record.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 13 April 2026 16:19 (one month ago)

There's probably one pedal that does it all now, lol. A friend of mine plays guitar in various cover bands, and on St. Patrick's Day they had a U2 gig. He was going to figure out the confluence of effects to get the guitar sound of "Mysterious Ways," but then he found a pedal with a pre-set called something like "Mysterious" that was more or less exactly that song's settings.

Deb's gear setup:

Intently watching her play "Off Your Face" a couple months ago from several meters away makes me hard to believe that's not her favorite song to play.
