That remix of Can's Future Days was pretty neat too.
Just curious: but wasn't Domina a remix of E2-E4? I read somewhere that Maurizio's remix was rejected at the time by Gottsching. True?

"mind of a machine" - the bass is much fatter on the new version, and it gets down to business much quicker (most of the new versions do). on the new disc, it maintains the pace instead of building tension. speaking of "the pace", it could definitely work as a slow tech-house stomper a la rob hood's "the pace". i sort of miss the electric guitar, but apart from that (and the thicker bass) he pretty much left it alone, although those crazy synth sweeps pop out quite a bit more.
"science fiction" - 95 version was the sound of the funky (909) drummer over the first stirrings of "at les" and echoes of "please stand by" and "ladies and gentlemen". great breakdown 2/3 of the way through and when it comes back ... those strings! the guitar!! it's like vangelis vs george duke!! this one is WAY different in the new version ... much more "techno". about 10 seconds in he drops the jetstream synth squelches all over the place, puts crazy phasing on the high-hats and snares and turns the bassline into a moroder-esque midrange percolator. here the breakdown isn't so much a breakdown as it is a sudden turn into extremely funky stripped-down groove territory. the new version KILLS the 95 version, as great as the early version was.
"a wonderful life" - well, you can't fuck with perfection. 95 version rules the school, ye fules, obviously. the new version is louder and has more stereo fx. it's also got more of a buildup, sort of climaxes where the first one starts. it's really heartbreaking, more poignant and dramatic, where the earlier version is just placid and beautiful ... i prefer the simplicity of the original but the new one's nice too.
so far 2/3 for the 95 version!!!
"technology" - funny, this time the drama synths are bigger in the original. in the new version, the synths seem a bit subtler, the beats are slightly tricked up and have more space to breathe. one for the 05 version, though the 95 is a close contender. it just makes more sense. four epics in a row is a bit suffocating - short and sweet is the order of the day on the new version and i think it makes sense (esp for a remix/remaster project where lots of consumers are already going to have the earlier version and in a post-p2p world where anybody can get an mp3 of the 95 versions...)
"they were" - the only track on the original that didn't really work for me. i just don't like pseudo-orchestral vibe all that much ... theo parrish and rob hood have both attempted stuff like this and it never works for me. the new version adds a bit of chatter to the drums and some new synth work. it still doesn't really work for me but at least takes the emphasis off those synth swoops and puts it on the chord progression and those great shivery 909 snares so it's much more listenable. also he adds a breakdown which gives that great wobbly bassline a moment to shine, when he overlays the martial snare on top it's a redeeming moment for the track. 05 version is a huge improvement.
"landcruising" - the old version is brilliant, but so short! the new version is almost twice as long and sounds much much better thanks to the remaster. that gorgeous sparkly starlit piano line comes floating out of the speakers in the new one and just floats in the air. totally magical remastering job.
― vahid (vahid), Sunday, 11 December 2005 05:12 (eighteen years ago) link
"one day soon" - ok, this version is INSANE. i forget how the original sounded in 97 when i first got my hands on "landcruising" but now it just sounds like whatever, kraftwerk-italo-eno nostalgia piece. the new version runs everything through that crazy fuzzy sucking-down-the-drain filter we first saw on urban tribe's album, adds fat bass explosions halfway through, and adds new strings to the end. gorgeous!
"home entertainment" - the first version is pretty similar to the original, just a bit more going on in the way of development and dynamics. the freestyle/electro feel in the beat is a bit more explicit in the new version. the "caya dub" is a beatless exercise in vainquer-type ebb-and-flow. oh yeah, there's also a remix of "technology" called "technoloambient" that explores similar territory.
the new track, "sparkle" steals synths from something else he did ... off the top of my head, i don't remember what ... it rides along on a paperclip-people type mellow house beat, cool mellow synths and some funky bongo beats. kind of like what you imagine a CC remix of 90s larry heard would sound like. nice stuff.

There are tons of mixes. Some are quite good actually, although I never liked Pacou too much as a producer. Not that it's bad what he does, just a bit too puristic for me. And I have to admit "No Computers Involved" was the last Pacou record I really listened too. I seeing the title I was instantly prejudiced.
