no, i am not. i made a pretty simple joke abt how lil b was going to have to do some work to get the attention of the internet rap nerd posse that has jumped to the next new thing before he even got another record out. acting as if these two acts were totally unrelated & why would they be in competition etc. etc. is disingenuous.

you asked why. i said they have the same audiences and are both gimmicky. then we went down this rabbithole where you guys were denying that shock humor might just qualify as 'a gimmick' -- especially ridic considering its been a gimmick that has been used for years

were geto boys rapping from experience about necrophilia?

no but that wasnt the content of every song iirc?

the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

i mean of course it was a gimmick to them too

the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

i would much rather that people lie a lot. cuz most people's lives are rilly boring.

scott seward, Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

i agreed with you that they are gimmicky! wtf are you talking about

unfinested display names I have loved (The Reverend), Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

skot otm

unfinested display names I have loved (The Reverend), Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

and i agreed that they and lil b have the same audience, too

unfinested display names I have loved (The Reverend), Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

brotha lynch hung is a dude for whom its not a gimmick simply because hes done so many variations on it -- obv authenticity isnt the only thing involved here -- i mean dude made a career out of different kinds of shock humor. but theres a depth to his stories & the ***purposefulness*** to them that keeps it from being a gimmick

im not saying these dudes are stuck as gimmicks or something. or that thats all their is to their music. i just admitted ive barely listened to much of it. but thats undeniably a part of the appeal, when everyone's going around quoting the MOST SHOCKING LYRICS to each other w/out talking about anything else

the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:24 (fifteen years ago)

then rev& i are in agreement -- j0rdan said they werent gimmicky

the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:24 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think that they're gimmicky

J0rdan S., Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:25 (fifteen years ago)

"cially ridic considering its been a gimmick that has been used for years"

right. its just one of many sub-genres of rap. lots of people have done it. nobody has said that they have reinvented the wheel. but they are GOOD at it. that's the difference right there. not everybody is.

scott seward, Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:25 (fifteen years ago)

of course it's part of the appeal, not sure who said it wasn't

unfinested display names I have loved (The Reverend), Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

"i just admitted ive barely listened to much of it."

listen to more and come back with pie and opinion. you don't want to get all kill bill/dr. morbs up in here.

scott seward, Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:30 (fifteen years ago)

wait that should be all kill bill/momus! morbz was basterds.

scott seward, Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

scott i never talked shit about the music at all -- i just mentioned how ppl were talking about it -- theres nothing wrong w/ being gimmicky per se!! i cant believe this is a point of contention

yall are mad defensive

J0rdan S., Saturday, 4 September 2010 22:49 (fifteen years ago)

deej, this whole thing of coming into threads with contrary opinions (which is absolutely fine) and then being all "y'all are so defensive!" when ppl back up their own opinions, cut it out

unfinested display names I have loved (The Reverend), Saturday, 4 September 2010 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

i didnt have a 'contrary opinion' -- i just wasnt cheerleading

the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Saturday, 4 September 2010 22:59 (fifteen years ago)

well plus its that thing on here and elsewhere where people are like: wait, why does everyone like this stuff all of a sudden? CUZ WE LIKE IT! yeah but REALLY whats going on here? NO WE JUST REALLY LIKE IT. hmmm, what's the deal its just like this other thing and this and this. and on and on. its true that things happen fast on the web and i understand blog burnout but there isn't always a reason to be suspicious. its just fun and we like it. even if the pitchfork guy likes it!

scott seward, Saturday, 4 September 2010 23:06 (fifteen years ago)

it's an aspect of what they're doing but not the reason for the attention.

yeah imo t's a real stretch to call these guys shock-rap. yes there's deliberately omg stuff in there, but the production and energy and cadences and rhymes have a lot more going on than just "dude i can't believe he said that."

a tenth level which features a single castle (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 4 September 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)

(that was meant to say either it's a real stretach or 'tis a real stretch, whichever one sounds better)

yes 'these guys are good' is usually what inspires ppl to care about something. but thats ... always true.

but their music is 'about' being shocking. i dont see how this is rlly arguable

the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Saturday, 4 September 2010 23:18 (fifteen years ago)

o wait the pitchfork guy likes this? I'm out

(e_3) (Edward III), Saturday, 4 September 2010 23:21 (fifteen years ago)

"yes 'these guys are good' is usually what inspires ppl to care about something. but thats ... always true"

but on ilm people come up with a zillion different theories about why something gets attention or why people are falling for something and its almost like they can't believe that its because people just like it. like its mass hypnosis. instead of just, you know, word of mouth about something cool!

scott seward, Sunday, 5 September 2010 01:08 (fifteen years ago)

yeah but they have the exact same audience

from tyler's twitter: "I Have Departed Ways With Odd Future. It Was Fun While It Lasted, But I Am Now A Lone (ex) Wolf."

hoping this doesn't last, he's the core of OF

cyclops eyes over here (patsy), Sunday, 5 September 2010 08:26 (fifteen years ago)

have to wonder if he's fucking around... i mean, there really is no odd future w/o him, considering earl is gone

J0rdan S., Sunday, 5 September 2010 08:29 (fifteen years ago)

also it would be like he broke up with all of his best friends? weird

J0rdan S., Sunday, 5 September 2010 08:33 (fifteen years ago)

yeah that's what i'm going to assume until some more info comes out

I don't think lil b & of have the same audience. People @ philaflava, who are total backpackers listening to ehlzi & jay elec, are goin nuts about earl & tyler.

sisilafami, Sunday, 5 September 2010 14:58 (fifteen years ago)

I guess I could toot my own horn here. I spoke to Tyler around a month ago. Here it is:

J0rdan S., Sunday, 5 September 2010 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

not a character but... lol nevermind

show was a huge classic for young me. dude is a few years younger than me but feelin synergy w earl on this. nice to see dbz still transcending generations of nerdy kids & infiltrating rap music

samosa gibreel, Sunday, 5 September 2010 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

imo the big diff between these dudes & 'classic' horrorcore: 4chan

the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Sunday, 5 September 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

teenagers using the word "faggot" is not the work of 4chan, i assure you

the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Sunday, 5 September 2010 18:16 (fifteen years ago)

can i make it clear from the jump that bcuz i think they are 'influenced' by internet shock culture this does not mean that the music is good bad or indifferent

the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Sunday, 5 September 2010 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

i just really don't see what this has to do with 4chan
