they're not getting attention cuz of rape + drug abuse jokes, they're getting attention cuz they're funny + inventive + good.

― scott seward, Saturday, 4 September 2010 19:55 (fifteen years ago)
my question was how Lil B was gonna still the light back -- hes pretty WILD & CRAZY cooking things but that cant really compete with the gimmick of bloody music videos where u remove your fingernail on tape
― the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Saturday, 4 September 2010 19:56 (fifteen years ago)
*STEAL the light back
lil b's appeal is totally different than ofwgkta's

generally, i dont have an opinion on these dudes yet
except that domo is 'not my thing' & noz saying its better than wiz khalifa is really eye-roll-y
― the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)
pretty sure different musicians have successfully shared similar audiences for a long time

― unfinested display names I have loved (The Reverend), Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:10 (fifteen years ago)
idk dude im just getting a SHINY NEW TOY vibe from the way everyone's suddenly blindly jumping from one gimmick rap act to the next
**fwiw saying they are gimmicky is not a judgment of quality but they are undeniably gimmicky**

lil b is gimmicky
odd future are gimmicky -- they're classic skater punks who happen to rap
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)
but youre kidding yourself if u dont think SHOCK RAP isnt part of the appeal
it's an aspect of what they're doing but not the reason for the attention. if a bunch of talentless fucks were rhyming about the same shit they wouldn't get much traction with me. I'm pretty jaded.
― (e_3) (Edward III), Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

**rolls eyes** i think we can both agree that if talentless fucks were rhyming about the same shit theyd get less attention, and if talented dudes like them were rapping about doing their taxes it would be really boring xxp
― the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:13 (fifteen years ago)
er, odd future are NOT gimmicky

rap is gimmicky, discuss

no, i am not. i made a pretty simple joke abt how lil b was going to have to do some work to get the attention of the internet rap nerd posse that has jumped to the next new thing before he even got another record out. acting as if these two acts were totally unrelated & why would they be in competition etc. etc. is disingenuous.
you asked why. i said they have the same audiences and are both gimmicky. then we went down this rabbithole where you guys were denying that shock humor might just qualify as 'a gimmick' -- especially ridic considering its been a gimmick that has been used for years

no but that wasnt the content of every song iirc?
i mean of course it was a gimmick to them too
― the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)
i would much rather that people lie a lot. cuz most people's lives are rilly boring.
― scott seward, Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)
i agreed with you that they are gimmicky! wtf are you talking about
― unfinested display names I have loved (The Reverend), Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)
skot otm
and i agreed that they and lil b have the same audience, too
― unfinested display names I have loved (The Reverend), Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:23 (fifteen years ago)
brotha lynch hung is a dude for whom its not a gimmick simply because hes done so many variations on it -- obv authenticity isnt the only thing involved here -- i mean dude made a career out of different kinds of shock humor. but theres a depth to his stories & the ***purposefulness*** to them that keeps it from being a gimmick
im not saying these dudes are stuck as gimmicks or something. or that thats all their is to their music. i just admitted ive barely listened to much of it. but thats undeniably a part of the appeal, when everyone's going around quoting the MOST SHOCKING LYRICS to each other w/out talking about anything else
― the embrace of waka flocka is v pertinent (deej), Saturday, 4 September 2010 20:24 (fifteen years ago)
then rev& i are in agreement -- j0rdan said they werent gimmicky
