rev posted something about cult-type created worlds, which i liked a lot. re: local hero (e-40, e.g.) vs. outsider (earl, etc). it's an interesting and useful observation, and one that isn't limited to rap. this distinction speaks to one's impression of "authenticity," right? the local hero derives authenticity from embodiment or representation, from speaking for a reality that is thought to exist independently. the outsider, on the other hand, presents individual experience and aesthetics as a pocket reality. in either case, what's being admired is the sense that the thing in question is somehow real.

i'm not sure i agree with that completely. the local hero certainly does trade in a certain authenticity of reality, a community reality rather than individual reality, but the outsider often works within a kind of unreality? at least there's a certain suspension of disbelief at play. like...do i think earl is even attempting to present an authentic representation of his individual reality? fuck no! obviously there's a basis in his real life, but the embellishments are plain to the naked eye. the outsider often takes more artistic license, so to say.
(i should note i didn't intend for my theory to only be applicable to rap)

haha i don't think they even say "assmilk" in "assmilk", the title is kinda gratuitous tbh, not that i mind

but the reality isn't in the stories told or the pose adopted, it's in your sense of who he is and where he's coming from underneath all that. i get this really clear sense of place & time from this shit: american teen stoner, time to kill, room in the basement, get fucked up & play video games, lolz, trees, etc. that's the reality, and to my mind, it's not all that different than what the local hero trades in.
