i had that problem w/ it for like 10 years, so i understand even if i'm no longer actively annoyed by it. used to also hate "try again" for a long time.

i still kind of hate "try again" but "hate" is too strong a word. don't really get why it's so loved tbh.

I mourn the loss of this gifted woman, her music means so much to me.

weird i dunno i was like 10 when this song came out but it was just the biggest thing, everyone liked it. even now i can't think of a legit criticism against it. nb it's not even in my top 3 or anything but it's still nice

also overlooked of her songs: loose rap. though timbaland didn't produce it, was written by static major. one of my favorites.

yeah loose rap is nice but if we're talking non-hits from the self-titled it's all about "it's whatever" - that song slays me no matter how many times i play it

xxp the singles from one in a million were my introduction to her and i loved those. i pretty much hated late-90s r&b production for a long time tho, always sounded very dry and cold compared to the mid-90s sound i grew up with and still wanted and those two aaliyah singles epitomized that. it's taken me until quite recently to come around to that era of r&b in general.

"Are You That Somebody" because I've never met another song that still possesses all its original power from when I first heard it, at age 8, to now.

Like most things are compromised in some way by time and overplay. But not that song.

tbh 'more than a woman' kinda sounded like zelda music when i first heard it :-/

voted "Are You That Somebody?" because that was the one that really made me pay attention, but "If Your Girl Only Knew" was my second choice. Sad it only got one vote.

i was looking at the airplay numbers and seriously had no idea what was going on

"one in a million" and "4 page letter" peaked at #7 and #59 on the airplay chart, respectively. "hot like fire" did not place on that chart.

how, if at all, would we view her albums differently if "i care 4 u" had made it onto "one in a million" as intended

Well, 'One in a Million' would be significantly more awesome than it already is, but I think there would be enough left on the s/t for it to remain pretty damn good.

yeah what alex said, though i think "i care 4 u" would actually stick out a bit on OIAM and not in a good way - it seems to fit in with the s/t a lot more

i mean the reason the s/t has more of a classic rep than OIAM isn't that OIAM isn't as good, at its best, it's cuz there's basically no filler or anything less than great on the s/t. also, my views are coloured by "try again" being on international copies of the s/t

i guess this should go in the 'aaliyah' poll thread but i guess her label did a short 'documentary' (mostly just an interview) about the process of making the album & some of the songs
