is it okay if i love the acid squelches -- such a dope beat
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 August 2010 00:36 (fifteen years ago)
I would go for 'that somebody' but I have a problem with the baby noises.
― Vasco da Gama, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 00:49 (fifteen years ago)

― NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 02:01 (fifteen years ago)
i had that problem w/ it for like 10 years, so i understand even if i'm no longer actively annoyed by it. used to also hate "try again" for a long time.
― bernard goony (The Reverend), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 02:28 (fifteen years ago)
i still kind of hate "try again" but "hate" is too strong a word. don't really get why it's so loved tbh.
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 02:56 (fifteen years ago)
I mourn the loss of this gifted woman, her music means so much to me.

weird i dunno i was like 10 when this song came out but it was just the biggest thing, everyone liked it. even now i can't think of a legit criticism against it. nb it's not even in my top 3 or anything but it's still nice
― max skim (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:31 (fifteen years ago)
are you that somebody vs if your girl only knew.. i voted for the first one, but it's close!
also overlooked of her songs: loose rap. though timbaland didn't produce it, was written by static major. one of my favorites.
― wears suburban hang-ups on her sleeve like some kind of corporate logo (daria-g), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:33 (fifteen years ago)
yeah loose rap is nice but if we're talking non-hits from the self-titled it's all about "it's whatever" - that song slays me no matter how many times i play it
― max skim (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:35 (fifteen years ago)
xxp the singles from one in a million were my introduction to her and i loved those. i pretty much hated late-90s r&b production for a long time tho, always sounded very dry and cold compared to the mid-90s sound i grew up with and still wanted and those two aaliyah singles epitomized that. it's taken me until quite recently to come around to that era of r&b in general.
― bernard goony (The Reverend), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:38 (fifteen years ago)
some day you'll be abt 'more than a woman'
― max skim (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:42 (fifteen years ago)
"Are You That Somebody" because I've never met another song that still possesses all its original power from when I first heard it, at age 8, to now.
― Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 05:13 (fifteen years ago)
Like most things are compromised in some way by time and overplay. But not that song.
― Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 05:14 (fifteen years ago)
tbh 'more than a woman' kinda sounded like zelda music when i first heard it :-/

think i'll vote "try again" just cuz i'm afraid it'll get overlooked vs. everything else. what a collection of songs, tho.

oops just read the thread, i didn't even know "try again" was the default. i figured that to be "are you that somebody" or something.

― horseshoe, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 02:25 (fifteen years ago)
Are You Feelin' Me? not getting one vote kinda lame.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 03:28 (fifteen years ago)
"if your girl only knew" only getting ONE vote is...surprising
"i care 4 u" so underrated ;_;
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:42 (fifteen years ago)
voted "Are You That Somebody?" because that was the one that really made me pay attention, but "If Your Girl Only Knew" was my second choice. Sad it only got one vote.

― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:35 (fifteen years ago)
how did "one in a million" & "hot like fire" & "4 page letter" not crack the hot 100 at all btw
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:38 (fifteen years ago)
remember hearing both OiaM and 4PL on hip-hop/R&B radio a lot
― for the next throbbing minutes (corey), Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:51 (fifteen years ago)
As many Hot 100 chart policies have been modified over the years, one rule always remained constant: songs were not eligible to enter the Hot 100 unless they were available to purchase as a single. However, on December 5, 1998 the Hot 100 changed from being a "singles" chart to a "songs" chart. During the 1990s, a growing trend in the music industry was to promote songs to radio without ever releasing them as singles. It was claimed by major record labels that singles were cannibalizing album sales, so they were slowly phased out.
― The Reverend, Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:53 (fifteen years ago)
ah, well that explains it
i was looking at the airplay numbers and seriously had no idea what was going on
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:54 (fifteen years ago)
"one in a million" and "4 page letter" peaked at #7 and #59 on the airplay chart, respectively. "hot like fire" did not place on that chart.
― The Reverend, Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:55 (fifteen years ago)
#1/#12/#31 on r&b airplay
― The Reverend, Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:56 (fifteen years ago)
how, if at all, would we view her albums differently if "i care 4 u" had made it onto "one in a million" as intended
― pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 08:52 (fifteen years ago)
Well, 'One in a Million' would be significantly more awesome than it already is, but I think there would be enough left on the s/t for it to remain pretty damn good.
― Alex in Montreal, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 08:54 (fifteen years ago)
well then
― pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 08:57 (fifteen years ago)
yeah what alex said, though i think "i care 4 u" would actually stick out a bit on OIAM and not in a good way - it seems to fit in with the s/t a lot more
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 09:03 (fifteen years ago)
i mean the reason the s/t has more of a classic rep than OIAM isn't that OIAM isn't as good, at its best, it's cuz there's basically no filler or anything less than great on the s/t. also, my views are coloured by "try again" being on international copies of the s/t
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 09:04 (fifteen years ago)
i guess this should go in the 'aaliyah' poll thread but i guess her label did a short 'documentary' (mostly just an interview) about the process of making the album & some of the songs
