Well the two main reasons for me hating "Side Effects" are a) the music and b) the lyrics.
― Eric H., Saturday, 12 April 2008 03:03 (eighteen years ago)
Didn't really like this on 1st spin... all the songs seemed too generic... But it's grown on me a lot in the last 3 hours.. Can't get enough of Loving you long time and side effects is kinda stunning.
― Christyles, Saturday, 12 April 2008 14:38 (eighteen years ago)
like a druuug
― Surmounter, Saturday, 12 April 2008 14:55 (eighteen years ago)
"I Stay In Love" is breathtaking. It wouldn't sound out of place on Music Box or Daydream.
― The Brainwasher, Saturday, 12 April 2008 20:21 (eighteen years ago)
i know! it's so funny that she's gone back with the sound a little, i like it
― Surmounter, Saturday, 12 April 2008 20:34 (eighteen years ago)
I don't know if it's the production or what but I Stay in Love sounds like a chris brown ballad to me... Or maybe it's cos he's been doing mariah ballads... Anyway i love her voice in this one
― Christyles, Saturday, 12 April 2008 20:47 (eighteen years ago)
I just fell in love with Thanks for Nothing...
― Christyles, Saturday, 12 April 2008 21:20 (eighteen years ago)
I should stop listening to this now..
― Christyles, Saturday, 12 April 2008 21:21 (eighteen years ago)
Thanks For Nothing is so good. sounds old school and the vox are greeeat
― Surmounter, Saturday, 12 April 2008 21:26 (eighteen years ago)
so what else is gonna get to no. 1? Lovin La Long Time, I'm That Chick, Side Effects?
― Surmounter, Saturday, 12 April 2008 21:29 (eighteen years ago)
I'm hoping for LYLT to be released as a single soon... It would be cruel not to share it's saccharine goodness with the rest of the world. Plus it's the best track on the album IMO.
― Christyles, Saturday, 12 April 2008 21:42 (eighteen years ago)
it would be cruel -- and it's sOOOOOOO SUMMERY
― Surmounter, Saturday, 12 April 2008 21:44 (eighteen years ago)
I don't know why they're making "Bye Bye" the next single, there are so many better songs on the album.
― The Brainwasher, Saturday, 12 April 2008 21:45 (eighteen years ago)
what??? BYE BYE? very strange. i mean it's not bad but come on
― Surmounter, Saturday, 12 April 2008 21:46 (eighteen years ago)
Summery, breezy and deliriously good.

out today! can't wait. so, more and more, i'm finding this whole thing wonderful. you know how there's that 2nd phase of songs to hit you? Mine are: Cruise Control, O.O.C., For The Record and Thanx For Nothin.
There's something SO 90s about some of these, and i absolutely love it.
Oh and I love how Touch My Body is instantly catchy but it's also totally a grower in that i appreciate it differently every time i hear it!
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 00:17 (eighteen years ago)
I haven't warmed to "Touch My Body."
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 00:43 (eighteen years ago)
Good call on "Thanx for Nothin'" and "For the Record". I doubt either will be singles but they are among my favorites, especially the former.
Elsewhere I'm a little disappointed so far. I think Emancipation of Mimi actually works great as an album--I love just about every track. I know I shouldn't be surprised that a Mariah album has filler, but there are some real clunkers here. I haven't been able to sit through "I Stay in Love" or "Side Effects" more than once and I'm never compelled to bother with the last 2 tracks either. "Last Kiss" and "Love Story" are decent but I would've preferred another track or 2 like "I'm That Chick" instead.
I could see "I'm That Chick" going to number one for sure and maybe "Lovin' You Long Time" too. Otherwise we might have to wait for the inevitable re-release-with-new-hit-single-that-isn't-included-here (ala "Don't Forget About Us") before she breaks the Beatles' record.
― lou, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 02:27 (eighteen years ago)
i love how much crazy she brings to my radio w/ "touch my body"
today, all day, i can't stop saying "I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN" -- my girlfriend is about to kill me.
all b/c of mariah!
― Mike McGooney-gal, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 03:30 (eighteen years ago)
hahaha
lou, you're crazy re: side effects! i totally agree though, that there needs to be another 1 or 2 I'm That Chicks (was just saying so to my boyfriend actually). BUT, side effects is like my fav track i think. for me the fillers are Last Kiss, I Stay In Love and Love Story but the thing is, for fillers, they're good! and i think the BIGGER point is that almost every mariah album has a few schmaltzy fillers. i think the moral of the story is we were totally spoiled by Mimi.
but yes i definitely see those 2 in particular going to no. 1 -- I'm That Chick and Lovin Ya Long Time, which i hope stays there for fucking weeks.
the last 2 tracks i find good, just sweet -- very Billy Joel/Music Box, IMO.
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 12:40 (eighteen years ago)
I Stay In Love is actually a GREAT filler. it's weird though it's still sort of a filler for me, maybe cuz it's just kind of saccharine.
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 12:41 (eighteen years ago)
Alright, I'll revisit "Side Effects" if you insist. :)
I wasn't expecting this but I have to say that (for now at least) Discipline > E=MC^2
And Love/Hate >>>>>>>>>>>> everything else.
― lou, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 12:50 (eighteen years ago)
ooh i'll have to get!
dude i don't know if I Stay In Love With you is filler anymore. it sounds goood
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 15:00 (eighteen years ago)
Times review is pretty shortsighted. doesn't go into what's great. the main criticisms are the processed sound of the some of the tracks, and the compression of her voice.
my take: i like the processed stuff -- sound effects is different for mariah, b.c it's usually more natural/RnB, while this is more pop/processed/whatever, and i think with her voice it works really interestingly!
and damn just because she's not singing like an opera stor doesn't mean her voice is out of it. the review barely touched on all the great tracks on this album. really hardly at all. bogus. i'm upset.

seriously
― Surmounter, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:10 (eighteen years ago)
Nice write-up. I was just thinking yesterday that Mariah must smoke weed.
There really are a lot "We Belong Together" rewrites (which is actually what I was hoping for). None of them really pack as strong of a punch as the original but, taken together, they leave me just as satisfied.
My initial disappointments are mostly fading fast. This album is consuming me!
― lou, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:20 (eighteen years ago)
otm, all of it
― Surmounter, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:20 (eighteen years ago)
(ur post, not the write-up, but that was pretty otm too)
― Surmounter, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:22 (eighteen years ago)
I'm That Chick is really hilarious, esp. when you realize how stoned it sounds... i mean the way she says "man" in that mexican accent
HA
― Surmounter, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:26 (eighteen years ago)
imagine how much mariah giggles when she is stoned
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:26 (eighteen years ago)
i know, i love the thought of it
― Surmounter, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:33 (eighteen years ago)
I have to say, when she sings "What we got is still somethin' somethin'" in "Last Kiss" it really sounds like she forgot the lyrics to her own song.
― lou, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:49 (eighteen years ago)
maybe she did! sometimes i forget and then just end up keeping the mistake :/
― Surmounter, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:51 (eighteen years ago)
I like more than my fair share of dumb pop. I'm sort of confused as to why Mariah has been one major exception to the rule for me, Glitter soundtrack aside.
― Eric H., Thursday, 17 April 2008 21:04 (eighteen years ago)
eric, darlin, just cuz it's pop doesn't mean it's dumb!!
2nd, i love that you don't like mariah but you love the Glitter soundtrack! i've actually never heard it, except for the I didn't mean to turn you on cover, which is fab
― Surmounter, Thursday, 17 April 2008 21:07 (eighteen years ago)
No, it's because it's Mariah that it's dumb, and I mean that in a purely taxonomical sense, not critical.
I should've said Glitter and her greatest hits disc. Maybe my problem with most Mariah albums is that there are non-singles on them. (Totally disagree with Rich on the notion that this disc is front-to-back a collection of jiffy-pop singles.)
― Eric H., Thursday, 17 April 2008 21:13 (eighteen years ago)
i'm not totally inclined to agree with that either but i get his point -- i think he was responding to a lot of reviews calling the album too "formulaic"
you know how sometimes ppl latch onto one observation about a new release? that's it
― Surmounter, Thursday, 17 April 2008 21:15 (eighteen years ago)
Would it help if I said I like E=MC2 less than I did upon first listen?
― Eric H., Thursday, 17 April 2008 21:23 (eighteen years ago)
did you like MIMI?
― Surmounter, Thursday, 17 April 2008 21:24 (eighteen years ago)
Not particularly. I'm really mostly a fan of the three-album stretch from Butterfly through Glitter.
― Eric H., Friday, 18 April 2008 02:40 (eighteen years ago)
