Heh, it's not v exciting Mr M. About 75% of it is indie stuff from the nineties and the rest is hardly earth shattering. I have historically been a bit shit about buying dance stuff, the initial enthusiastic Kompakt overindulgence notwithstanding.

"Take the Speicher split with Voigt & Voigt that had Vision 04 and Was Du Willst on it. Now, Vision 03 was a 10 minute epic, so you assume that the 10 minute epic labelled Was Du Willst must actually be Vision 04. BUT NO. "

I should've stuck with my assumption (see the Kompakt thread for more mislabelling woes).

after listening to the "girls" remix (and "I look into mid air"), I can't really blame anyone for thinking he was tom middleton. They remind me a lot of the jedi knigths, only with more...balls

randy mamola, Saturday, 16 October 2004 14:12 (nineteen years ago) link

latest hilarious rumour is that rex the dog is actually mark moore aka s'express. which might make sense of the mute connection (rhythm king label etc..) i sincerely hope this is true.

jwd, Sunday, 17 October 2004 07:47 (nineteen years ago) link

took me a while to come round, but that prodigy mix has finally sold me on rex.

Mil (Mil), Sunday, 17 October 2004 13:01 (nineteen years ago) link

The 'Heartbeats' remix is the best of the bunch so far. So lovely.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Sunday, 17 October 2004 21:18 (nineteen years ago) link

oooh ! http://www.rexthedog.net the clips don't seem to work though

Pud McPud, Monday, 18 October 2004 15:48 (nineteen years ago) link

"A guy in a magazine said this remix is disappointing and 'too much like Jan Hammer'. We do not understand this, to sound like Jan Hammer can only be a positive ?"

I love her/him/them.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:04 (nineteen years ago) link

The clips work for me. The grammar seems a bit awkward which made me suspect that maybe Rex the Dog is German after all but maybe it's a faux-naif Kompakt-aping thing.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 18 October 2004 23:40 (nineteen years ago) link

The overly juvenille nature almost reminds of a prank Aphex Twin would pull.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 18 October 2004 23:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Hm - the summaries seem kind of phoney; a bit crass if this guy's English, I gotta say.

Which made me think - is Rex the Dog named after Inspector Rex? You know, that laughable Austrian detective drama starring a crime fighting dog? I'm sure that show is a huge export from Europe, and for most English speaking people is the only experience of Germanic television. There's actually been a few running jokes with my friends about Kommisar Rex, while German/Austrian mates remain horrified that it's actually broadcast here in Australia.

Again, this makes me think it's kind of a pisstake - not the music, so much as how it's presented as a 'Kompakt' release.

The English is obviously a pisstake...

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:12 (nineteen years ago) link

I believe the person who said Rex The Dog is Mark Moore is correct.

Pistola, Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:47 (nineteen years ago) link

That makes quite a lot of sense to me too.

However I'm also hearing a lot of Kohncke in that Client remix, weirdly.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 21 October 2004 05:01 (nineteen years ago) link

From the website:

"Depeche Mode: Photographic

The song Photographic is from Depeche Mode's first album Speak And Spell which was first released in 1981 when we were children."

Mark Moore wasn't a child in '81 ergo can't be him. It has to be somebody in their late 20s/early 30s...

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 21 October 2004 05:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think the website is to be trusted at all in this regard.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 21 October 2004 05:24 (nineteen years ago) link

i know this is a long shot but i was thinking it might be Jake Williams

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 21 October 2004 13:02 (nineteen years ago) link

I am wondering, did people go crazy trying to find out who Luomo was back when no one knew it was V Delay? Surely there must have been some hype and mystery before Vocalcity came out.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 21 October 2004 13:59 (nineteen years ago) link

It's me, fuckers.

Courtney Love, Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:02 (nineteen years ago) link

I have it on good faith it's Oakenfold.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I saw a guy in Plymouth yesterday wearing a green t-shirt with "Rex The Dog?" in black writing on it.

At first i thought - woah cool, i'm gonna look for one of these on the internet.

but after searching everywhere and not turning anything up, maybe i saw Rex the dog?!?!

either way it was a cool shirt.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Sunday, 24 October 2004 10:23 (nineteen years ago) link

did people go crazy trying to find out who Luomo was back when no one knew it was V Delay?

Or that Vladislav Delay was actually called Sasu Ripatti? That Afrika Bambaataa is really Kevin Donovan? We want passport and fingerprints, preferably.

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 24 October 2004 12:18 (nineteen years ago) link

one month passes...
There was an 'interview' with Rex The Dog on last Friday's Annie Mac show, which you can listen to online...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/dance/anniemac/index.shtml

It's dumb, but made me laugh :p

There's also a mini-mix by Rex, containing:

Mel & Kim 'Showing Out' (Supreme)
Bangkok Impact 'Masters of the Universe' (Crème Organization)
S'Express 'Theme From S'Express' (Rhythm King)
Prodigy 'Girls' (XL Recordings)
Ellen Allien 'Trashscapes (Anthony Rother Remix)' (BPitch Control)
DJ Koze 'Brutalga Square' (Kompakt)
Mel & Kim 'Respectable' (Supreme)

Enjoy.

Pistola, Tuesday, 30 November 2004 07:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Judging by that playlist it has to be Mark McGuire of S'Express/SAW.

Edd, Tuesday, 30 November 2004 07:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I've gone off "Frequencies" quite a bit. It doesn't have the residual air of melancholy which characterises all the rest of his best work, that property which allows it to make sense that he releases 12 inches on Kompakt.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 08:37 (nineteen years ago) link

He might be Mark McGrath.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 10:33 (nineteen years ago) link

'I Look Into Mid Air' is my fave Rex track

S Express was actually Mike Morris - he also presented the football results on TVAM during those heady late 80s days

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 10:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah Mark Moore was the main guy in S Express but Mark McGuire was the engineer/techy behind the scenes guy who was also an engineer for Stock Aitken Waterman.

Edd, Friday, 3 December 2004 04:17 (nineteen years ago) link

So I don't feel like reading through this thread...its Swizz Beats, isn't it?

I think this got lost in the fire - but, you can also get the EXCELLENT mnimix from http://www.rexthedog.net/minimixupdate.htm

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 10:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Oohh, also: Rex's Night Of Shame!

http://www.rexthedog.net/kompakt_dinner.htm

"For the second time I fell asleep before [Michael Mayer] started to play. We are nearly expecting to be expelled from KOMPAKT. With the music we make we skate on difficult ice anyway. "

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 10:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Hahaha that's great. It also has the added benefit of making me feel better about not going to Fabric that night. There was no way I would have stayed up to see Mr Mayer's set either, what with having a cold and that.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 10:35 (nineteen years ago) link

that is so fucking funny

he has it on the authority of his heart, which is all that matters.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 04:32 (nineteen years ago) link

I heard it from the XFM DJ eddie temple morris.

yeah, but think about it.

they wouldnt let a guy with 2 small releases and a knife remix under his belt do a Depeche Mode remix and a prodigy ( on their make or break release) remix if it was some nobody.

so its got to be a well known ( in the industry ) person.

or at least a studio enginner that people know well..

and check out the rob da bank quote earlier.

but hey whadda I know

can anyone translate this ? it looks like it's daniel milller!

or maybe not, german was never my thing...

eek!

rover, Friday, 28 January 2005 18:28 (nineteen years ago) link

How can read it left in the comments, the secret seems to be ventilated: Allegedly puts Daniel Miller, Chef of, behind the alias "Rex The Dog", which clears mode and The Prodigy at present as Remixer for Depeche and with original TRACKS on compact powerfully. If that is actually correct, at the high age again powerfully the fires unterm ass got anyhow; -))
