ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Thursday, 26 August 2010 22:34 (fifteen years ago)

Man, that band looks like it needs some exercise.

Ground Zero Mostel (Hurting 2), Friday, 27 August 2010 00:26 (fifteen years ago)

are there any indie bands who've forgone the oblig staging of (completely unremarkable singer) foremost, other members aligned due to some coefficient of instrument played/stature/idiosyncracy?

nakhchivan, Friday, 27 August 2010 01:08 (fifteen years ago)

I thought it had long been standard to deemphasize the charismatic singer/frontman in the photo as a kind of fuck you to celebrity. Maybe that was more true in my college days though.

Ground Zero Mostel (Hurting 2), Friday, 27 August 2010 01:33 (fifteen years ago)

Like Fugazi photos often have Joe Lally, the most introverted band member, in front or at least sharing the front.

true but that was a reaction to a long established protocol for diffidently conveyed hierachy, which now seems to have been restored

They all look vaguely embarrassed to be there.

wow, that's some serious moon face he's got there

B-Boy Bualadh Bos (ecuador_with_a_c), Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

saw decemberists pic on a rare visit to pfk and thought of starting/reviving a 'terrible looking indie band' thread, so yeah

nakhchivan, Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

'how do we get the requisite emphasis on lead singer/songwriter without it seeming ~too~ obviously hierarchical?'
'is that srsly necessary? that's some serious moon face he's got there'
'yeah i dunno,.....just get him to hold some, like, candy canes, or a broken ragdoll'
'flowers it is'

Elevator conversation yesterday, circa 5pm:

Guy from neighboring office: so what are you listening to
Me: Mobb Deep. Because it's cold and rainy.
Guy: Ever heard of the Decembrists?
Me: um, yeah I know who they are. They're from Portland.
Guy: Well, I used to manage them.
Me: Really? Why did they fire you?
Guy: Well, I let them go. This is back when they were a jam band.

I tried to steer the conversation to general music industry malaise type stuff rather than admit that I fucking hate this ludicrous band

will anyone rep for'em? (dpn't look at me)

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

*jumps into line of fire* i liked the first couple of albums! maybe even the first three! i don't recall. and moonfaced smugness aside i don't suppose i have anything much against them now, although i haven't listened to them in a few years, or their last couple of albums.

also, if you covered over the two on the right in that there photo, i could imagine it being a photo of a band i'd like.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

or there last couple of albums at all, i should say.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

"The Crane Wife" is pretty awesome, to my recollection. Other than that they're pretty dire, although I embarrasedly admit I liked their goofier first couple albums a fair bit during the middle of the last decade.

a confident, off-duty spy (staggerlee), Thursday, 9 December 2010 20:10 (fifteen years ago)

yep, crane wife...fantastic...rest of their output...craptacular.

Yeah, there's an ass for that. (chrisv2010), Thursday, 9 December 2010 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

Saw them at a festival last year while they were touring for their last album, the rock opera. It was like watching a high-school production of "The Black Rider" made into a comedy. There was something very Rushmore about it.

Apropos bit from M Perpetua's tumblr thingy today:

But just in recent memory, one thing that comes to mind is how the Decemberists went from being considered a fairly hip band in the early to mid 00s to being deeply uncool right now. But you know, I think the Decemberists were always deeply uncool and just lucked out in their cultural moment, things just went back to a natural balance and they have the modest, unapologetically dorky cult audience they deserve, a la They Might Be Giants. I think something the Decemberists and Arrested Development have in common is that their music and their fans exemplify a stereotype no one wants to be associated with — effete, wimpy, affected, unsexy. Overly “public radio,” you know? The music is weighed down by cultural baggage.

I still think Picaresque is a great album. It bothers me, though, that they made a whole EP about the Táin, without even bothering to find out how to pronounce the title. Also, in Táin stakes, they're no Horslips. But I digress.

B-Boy Bualadh Bos (ecuador_with_a_c), Thursday, 9 December 2010 23:38 (fifteen years ago)

all music is weighted with cultural baggage. I could care less about their fans or their stereotype - the songwriting (especially the lyrics) is just atrocious.

doctor probably told him he should wear transition lenses and still wants to be "eccentric" or "kooky" is my guess.

To be fair, one of his many activities is designing eyewear.
