Yeah, I'm with you, this is what I grew up thinking of as just Heavy Metal.
― glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:17 (fifteen years ago)
Celestiial's awesome Where Life Springs Eternal. "Ambient Metal" used to be my joke genre, but here it is
The Celestiial is a stunner. His first album from a few years back was also a corker; Scott turned me onto it at the time and I seem to remember a Decibel review as well.
I've been trying to get "Damnbient" across as a genre and this sure qualifies.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:21 (fifteen years ago)
OK, Sahg I is crushingly awesome, too. And two hours ago I was saying I hadn't discovered anything new and great for a while.
― glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:39 (fifteen years ago)
Glad to be of use.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:41 (fifteen years ago)
I saw some of the Sahg set at Roadburn but I didn't really know what I was watching.
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 09:04 (fifteen years ago)
I'm starting my morning with Sahg II now, and am still basically agape. How had I not even heard of this band? Because the name sounds like spinach, so my ears filtered it into Food before it reached my brain? Man.
Still puzzled, as I read various reviews around the net, by their being labeled "Stoner/Doom". Is this an age thing? Do people who grew up with later, faster metal as their formative introduction think slower metal must be a result of drugs?
― glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 13:17 (fifteen years ago)
well a lot of people since the early 90s reckon its only metal if its fast. Met plenty of people like that.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 14:05 (fifteen years ago)
still loving the new Blind Guardian, although I'm starting to think Tales from the Twilight World-Imagionations is the era i liked the best. but this has enough thrashy moments for me.
― funky brewster (San Te), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 14:27 (fifteen years ago)
sounds like I've gotta check out this sahg.
co-sign on the new celestiial. field recordings are a major component of the celestiial sound and it just works so freakin well.
might prefer the less metal one from a few years ago, tho.
― original bgm, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)
At this point, "stoner rock" has as much to do with drugs as "indie rock" has to do with being independent. It's just a description for the genre/sound.

The 3yo demographic's succinct assessment of Angra's Aqua: "Good." Still making up my own mind. I liked Angra a lot a long time ago, but skipped the 2 or 3 albums before this. Not sure my power-metal affections run as deep, at the moment, as they once did. Although that reminds me that I liked the new Gamma Ray album and haven't played it again recently…
― glenn mcdonald, Thursday, 26 August 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)
at one point I had Angra's first two albums on a special 2 for 1 package. I sold it. I'm really upset that I did...."Carry On" is a great tune.

Glad to see some Sahg appreciation. I'm really enjoying III right now. You could say their trajectory is similar to Grand Magus. I need to go back to the latest GM to see if I need to buy the CD at Allthatisheavy when the Sahg comes out.
― Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 26 August 2010 19:35 (fifteen years ago)
I much prefer older GM, so I think Sahg are probably better than current GM.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 26 August 2010 19:42 (fifteen years ago)
Liking new Drudkh
I like the latest Grand Magus more than the Sahg. Not hearing what others are in III - seems dull and generic. The Sword's latest is much more interesting to these ears.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 26 August 2010 19:52 (fifteen years ago)
"Ambient Metal" used to be my joke genre, but here it is"
tellin' ya, the new lustre album is the one to beat this year.
― scott seward, Thursday, 26 August 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)
I tell you, this is probably just a dumb coincidence, but it's pretty darn intriguing...Dimmu fans, does this not sound like Vortex singing?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=250iKj95l1w
― A. Begrand, Friday, 27 August 2010 01:14 (fifteen years ago)
Maybe I'm misunderstanding something here, but the video is called Dimmu Borgir featuring Vortex.
― Nate Carson, Friday, 27 August 2010 02:04 (fifteen years ago)
Ah, watching the video helped. No idea.
― Nate Carson, Friday, 27 August 2010 02:06 (fifteen years ago)
When I posted that video to my Facebook page, the Capcha text was "serfs machine." That made me laugh.
― Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Friday, 27 August 2010 02:12 (fifteen years ago)
That Lustre album did nothing for me, sadly. Today's other deletions were Netherbird, Dråpsnaat and Drudkh. But I'm liking this BXI (Boris + Ian Astbury) EP a lot.
― glenn mcdonald, Friday, 27 August 2010 02:16 (fifteen years ago)
hah, i guess the drudkh wasn't different enough for you to like it
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 27 August 2010 02:17 (fifteen years ago)
Been rocking the upcoming Dusted Angel (ex-B'Last) album today. Wow, what a great band!
― Nate Carson, Friday, 27 August 2010 09:53 (fifteen years ago)
man, this christian mistress album rules. great riffs, excellent solos, nice live band sound, and I LOVE the vocals.
― original bgm, Friday, 27 August 2010 19:20 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, I didn't like it much on first listen, but it really hooked me the second time I played it. The vocalist reminds me of the singer from Znöwhite. (That's a good thing.)
― Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Friday, 27 August 2010 19:25 (fifteen years ago)
That Znowhite comparison is a really good one. The one comparison I kept thinknig of was Kim McAuliffe from Girlschool. And yeah, this album has steadily turned into one of my 2010 faves. I gave it a very positive 7 in this month's Decibel, but should have given it an 8.
― A. Begrand, Friday, 27 August 2010 19:40 (fifteen years ago)
October Decibel just arrived!! :-D

lol'd at this -- what a packed schedule!

Kim McAuliffe from Girlschool
I really have to listen to girlschool one day. just watched, lol, zombie nightmare, and while it was too horrible to even work as a mst3k episode, the soundtrack ruled and the girlschool tracks sounded awesome.
― original bgm, Friday, 27 August 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)
listening to the christian mistress again. love the last track.
― original bgm, Friday, 27 August 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)
If you think Zombie Nightmare was a disaster, you need to check out Rock 'n Roll Nightmare -- the last 10 minutes literally exploded my mind.
I'm excited to check out your cover story, Adrien. Readers who aren't colorblind may also catch a giant three-quarter page pink column in the reviews section written by a certain other contributor to this thread...
― sounds like Dream Theater (J3ff T.), Friday, 27 August 2010 20:13 (fifteen years ago)
just looked up rock n roll nightmare on wikipedia. lol at the entire "plot" section:
It is about a rock band who end up in the middle of a confrontation between Heaven and Hell.[2]
thrones any good live? records never did much for me.
― original bgm, Friday, 27 August 2010 20:15 (fifteen years ago)
"That Lustre album did nothing for me, sadly."
do you enjoy ambient music or minimalism? cuz that might make a difference. it is more those than it is metal, probably. and, yet, it is metal.
― scott seward, Friday, 27 August 2010 20:17 (fifteen years ago)
You don't want spoilers. You want to watch the entire mediocre slasher movie just for those last 10 minutes. It is transcendent.
― sounds like Dream Theater (J3ff T.), Friday, 27 August 2010 20:17 (fifteen years ago)
haha jeez, thanks a lot j3ff! this forced me to queue it on netflix:
Also includes a documentary featurette about Thor titled "Revelations of a Rock 'n' Roll Warrior."
― original bgm, Friday, 27 August 2010 20:18 (fifteen years ago)
if it does not live up to the hype, you'll be hearing from me.
you and thor
do you enjoy ambient music or minimalism? cuz that might make a difference. it is more those than it is metal, probably. and, yet, it is metal.this sounds good to me. will check it out. i think i looked for it on grooveshark and didn't find the album you posted.

"listening to the christian mistress again. love the last track."
That's my favorite track too.
@ Alan - Thrones is way better live than on record IMO. Especially his latest set which is pretty eclectic--covering Melvins-ish rock, Sunn0)))-like drones, and high concept/brute force vocoder-metal.
― Nate Carson, Friday, 27 August 2010 20:41 (fifteen years ago)
cool! I definitely want to hit up this tour.

Is it me, or has it been a really slow year for the girly metal?
― A. Begrand, Friday, 27 August 2010 21:28 (fifteen years ago)
The year started out pretty fallow, but it's picked up a lot recently -- besides the stuff in my column, there's new music from Tristania, and the new Tarja solo album is actually quite excellent -- far better than the last Nightwish.
― sounds like Dream Theater (J3ff T.), Friday, 27 August 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)
Infernaeon are a just-okay death metal band. But their new album includes a cover of "Creeping Death" with vocals by Oderus Urungus, and that's an idea so brilliant it's just put them into Album of the Year contention.
― Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Friday, 27 August 2010 22:07 (fifteen years ago)
It's a fun cover, I'll give it that.
― A. Begrand, Friday, 27 August 2010 22:23 (fifteen years ago)
Oh, I like plenty of ambient music and minimalism. Lustre is a kind of thing I like, which was why I was sad about not liking it!
Excited to hear those Tristania and Tarja albums.
"Teeth and Claws", the first track on that BXI EP, is sounding like another shoo-in for my 2010 song list.
