I have been listening to the new album by Astriaal. 35 minutes' worth of competent but sterile melodic black metal is not the comeback I expected. Not exactly a bad record, just a disappointing follow-up to a great debut and a rare miss from Obsidian.

This new Blind Guardian album is so darn good. You listen to power metal album after bland power metal album (Rhapsody of Fire being the latest, bleh), and these guys always come along and outclass them all.

yea it's awesome. I also rebought Tales from the Twilight World which I'd sold during a brief period where I was dangerously broke....and THAT album is fucking amazing too. I've missed it.

It's been a fairly slow month for stuff I like (yay Iron Maiden, but no thanks on Blind Guardian and The Sword), but that just means more time to bask in Celestiial's awesome Where Life Springs Eternal. "Ambient Metal" used to be my joke genre, but here it is.

Oh, and due to jabs from JJ and Pfunk I'm listening to this new Sahg album, III. Never heard of them before now, but I'm like this pretty well. It's kind a like taking Deep Purple's most metal moments and pushing them a little way further towards Candlemass.

The Celestiial is a stunner. His first album from a few years back was also a corker; Scott turned me onto it at the time and I seem to remember a Decibel review as well.

I've been trying to get "Damnbient" across as a genre and this sure qualifies.

OK, Sahg I is crushingly awesome, too. And two hours ago I was saying I hadn't discovered anything new and great for a while.

I saw some of the Sahg set at Roadburn but I didn't really know what I was watching.

I'm starting my morning with Sahg II now, and am still basically agape. How had I not even heard of this band? Because the name sounds like spinach, so my ears filtered it into Food before it reached my brain? Man.

Still puzzled, as I read various reviews around the net, by their being labeled "Stoner/Doom". Is this an age thing? Do people who grew up with later, faster metal as their formative introduction think slower metal must be a result of drugs?

well a lot of people since the early 90s reckon its only metal if its fast. Met plenty of people like that.

At this point, "stoner rock" has as much to do with drugs as "indie rock" has to do with being independent. It's just a description for the genre/sound.

The 3yo demographic's succinct assessment of Angra's Aqua: "Good." Still making up my own mind. I liked Angra a lot a long time ago, but skipped the 2 or 3 albums before this. Not sure my power-metal affections run as deep, at the moment, as they once did. Although that reminds me that I liked the new Gamma Ray album and haven't played it again recently…

at one point I had Angra's first two albums on a special 2 for 1 package. I sold it. I'm really upset that I did...."Carry On" is a great tune.

Glad to see some Sahg appreciation. I'm really enjoying III right now. You could say their trajectory is similar to Grand Magus. I need to go back to the latest GM to see if I need to buy the CD at Allthatisheavy when the Sahg comes out.

I much prefer older GM, so I think Sahg are probably better than current GM.

Liking new Drudkh

I like the latest Grand Magus more than the Sahg. Not hearing what others are in III - seems dull and generic. The Sword's latest is much more interesting to these ears.

That Lustre album did nothing for me, sadly. Today's other deletions were Netherbird, Dråpsnaat and Drudkh. But I'm liking this BXI (Boris + Ian Astbury) EP a lot.

Been rocking the upcoming Dusted Angel (ex-B'Last) album today. Wow, what a great band!

man, this christian mistress album rules. great riffs, excellent solos, nice live band sound, and I LOVE the vocals.

Yeah, I didn't like it much on first listen, but it really hooked me the second time I played it. The vocalist reminds me of the singer from Znöwhite. (That's a good thing.)

That Znowhite comparison is a really good one. The one comparison I kept thinknig of was Kim McAuliffe from Girlschool. And yeah, this album has steadily turned into one of my 2010 faves. I gave it a very positive 7 in this month's Decibel, but should have given it an 8.

October Decibel just arrived!! :-D

I hear the cover story is really superduper awesome.
