The Sword album keeps growing on me the more I hear it. I was hoping for an improvement over their last two, but wasn't expecting something as good as Warp Riders.

As for the new Torche, it's a solid CD, but the last two tracks ("Face the Wall", "Out Again") are particularly great.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

thanks EZ, think I'll head out to Newbury in a bit. definitely looking forward to the Torche record to drop. that song Stosuy posted is fantastic

Still perplexed at the negative decibel review.

And I heard a fair amount of Slough Feg in the new material -- I think The Sword were paying attention when the aforementioned band opened for them.

everyone should listen to Slough Feg then.

Stargazer, Great Work of Ages (Profound Lore): Stargazer are progressive/arty black metal from, I think, Australia.

hey markers tell your puppetmaster about that, sounds like he would love it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 18:26 (fifteen years ago)

As long as it falls somewhere close to the "arty Wilco" center of the universe, I think acoleuthic (*cough* MARKERS...) will be able to enjoy it.

hmm is the theory that LJ has created a sockpuppet to act out his subconscious desire to shed his gender guilt?

no new stuff to report, have spent the last 4 days listening to Cancer Death Shall Rise over and over and wondering why I haven't spent more of my life up until now doing so.

gg eileen (jjjusten), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 20:19 (fifteen years ago)

there was a thread where lj hated 80s metal as it was sexist?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 20:24 (fifteen years ago)

or was it markers? sometimes I can't tell the difference..

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

It's funny how whenever acoleuthic is at a London FAP, markers isn't there... v. suspicious, methinks.

it explains how "both" of you forgot to vote in the metal poll.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

I thought acoluethic/markers voted and that's why the likes of Ulver, Boris and Gorilla Time Museum placed so well.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

no there wasn't a thread of LJ calling 80's metal sexist, it was me saying that if markers really was LJ, that's what he'd be saying in this thread.

the day the Marc Lois took over (San Te), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

but ya know post a few sexist lyrics maybe he'll show up within moments

the day the Marc Lois took over (San Te), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

lj did show disgust at the idea of a hair metal poll

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

but so did a lot of people..

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

Here's the new "high concept sfx" video from the Sword.

It's not convincing me.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 21:54 (fifteen years ago)

I have been listening to the new album by Astriaal. 35 minutes' worth of competent but sterile melodic black metal is not the comeback I expected. Not exactly a bad record, just a disappointing follow-up to a great debut and a rare miss from Obsidian.

This new Blind Guardian album is so darn good. You listen to power metal album after bland power metal album (Rhapsody of Fire being the latest, bleh), and these guys always come along and outclass them all.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 22:47 (fifteen years ago)

yea it's awesome. I also rebought Tales from the Twilight World which I'd sold during a brief period where I was dangerously broke....and THAT album is fucking amazing too. I've missed it.

ý never promýsed you a Weingarten (San Te), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 22:48 (fifteen years ago)

It's been a fairly slow month for stuff I like (yay Iron Maiden, but no thanks on Blind Guardian and The Sword), but that just means more time to bask in Celestiial's awesome Where Life Springs Eternal. "Ambient Metal" used to be my joke genre, but here it is.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 00:26 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, and due to jabs from JJ and Pfunk I'm listening to this new Sahg album, III. Never heard of them before now, but I'm like this pretty well. It's kind a like taking Deep Purple's most metal moments and pushing them a little way further towards Candlemass.

[gets distracted by something]

Yeah, a few more songs of this have gone by now. It's good. I'm off to find their first two albums now.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 01:49 (fifteen years ago)

Er, Jeff, not John. But hell, everybody should dig this.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 01:52 (fifteen years ago)

I'm guessing their earlier stuff is more trad doom than this stoner biker metal album.
Following Grand Magus trajectory perhaps?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 01:52 (fifteen years ago)

It's impossible to not like Sahg. I have high expectations with III...maybe I'll give it a listen tonight.

I wouldn't even call Sahg's stuff doom, it's straight-up heavy metal.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:14 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm with you, this is what I grew up thinking of as just Heavy Metal.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:17 (fifteen years ago)

Celestiial's awesome Where Life Springs Eternal. "Ambient Metal" used to be my joke genre, but here it is

The Celestiial is a stunner. His first album from a few years back was also a corker; Scott turned me onto it at the time and I seem to remember a Decibel review as well.

I've been trying to get "Damnbient" across as a genre and this sure qualifies.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:21 (fifteen years ago)

OK, Sahg I is crushingly awesome, too. And two hours ago I was saying I hadn't discovered anything new and great for a while.
