"C is for 'cookie', it's good enough for me"

dave q, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha it's like our own little version of "The Ring".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that really Roger Ebert?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry to beat the dead-horse executive branch isue, but I have to repeat, as far the

Bush was democratically elected, Florida chads or no Florida chads

thing goes:

1) As pointed out upthread, it's a republican democracy--so not exactly, even in a routine year.
2) "Democratically elected" = won popular vote = Gore.
3) The judicial branch selected our 43rd president.

Which is all also kinda interesting if you buy into the (perhaps wishful) framing of the pres. as the champion of the people against little-r republican tyranny; according to this school he really is supposed to be more specifically responsive to, concerned with their welfare.

But I'm at a complete loss as to how to rebut the fiendish "chads or no chads" argument.

PS How come nobody mentioned Britney's gum? Her own dumb fault but the endless close-up was pretty cheap.

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree with ronan.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Strange world.

Rather than stop at just the Bert & Ernie pic, I plundered forth into the master "don't blow" website (which has a lot of strange links on it... like the one advertising Japanese Girlfart Videos), and found this, which ties directly into the main topic.

Sure backed into that one, huh?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I cant find anything on google. Could someone kindly link me please? Dunno what i'm looking for.

Rhonda, Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

You've got to do the search at the image search engine. And I do mean you've got to.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yknow this thread would be the perfect introduction to ilx: alex going off on something, marcello being the contrarian, mark diverting it into a debate about the civil war and the nature of democracy, ally being ally, dan being dan, some guy being annoying, bush, britney, ernie and bert, roger ebert, someone saying "oh god why did i look at that," and finally me making some dumb meta-comment about it. we should put it in the FAQ, it's got everything!

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It hasn't got Geir.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

But, I mean, yeah... aside from that.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

It needs Gareth going off drunkenly on the lack of love around here, and then maybe someone posting "twwwwoooo weeeeeeeks" and then Miccio referencing Good CHarlotte, then it'd have everything ever.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

you forgot my snappy one liner :(

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry :(

And also Blount saying jess is otm :(

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread seems to be, oddly enough, Ned free. Certainly not normal.

And I've just posted in it, which makes it highly atypical as well.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been reading it but wasn't much compelled to post.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay folks, we can FAQ this one up! Admins, lock it up for posterity!

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

jess is OTM.

James Blount (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

what did he say? i can't be assed scrolling up

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Frankly, I like this quote from this article far better:

"Like, 'Early Morning' is basically talking about just going out and feeling bad the next day, and 'Touch of My Hand' is about, you know, touch of my hand," she continued

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

ned, you mysogynist!

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh good grief, I refuse to get drawn in (even as a joke! ;-)). The quote says nothing about tone but I have faith she was saying it with a laugh or roll of the eyes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps her eyes were rolling back into her head.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! Colin wins the whole thread.

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

misogynyst?

mysogynist?

misogynist?

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Option # 3, I think.

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"woman-hata" is easier to spell.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 07:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you know there was no word equivalent to misogyny to denote hatred of men? Oh hand on, there is. Misandry.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

hand on WHAT?!

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, she doesn't mention Bush at all--it's completely a blind statement of "respect" for authority. "He is the leader ergo we should listen".

..That or, she's not sure who the president is.

"Bert Ernie" - I had the "safe" filter turned on and still got an eyefull .. I hope there isn't a worse picture in the hard-core database.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Having looked at the full picture, it isn't as bad as I thought it was but it was still sufficiently bad that I wouldn't look at it at work. All I can say is Bert & Ernie know how to PARTY; Ben Affleck could learn a thing or two.

Can we change the meaning of "misogynist" to mean "one who makes women out of a Japanese soup"?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I have been thinking that EVERY TIME I READ THE WORD!!!!!!!!! "Hehe he said 'miso'."

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm confused... What's wrong with Britney? She's soooo HOT!
YEA! Britney! YEA! I GOT MAIL! I GOT MAIL! VOTE FOR BUSH! YEA! WAR! YEA!

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: "woman-hata" vs "woman-hat"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Was amateurist trying to summon a misogynist?

David. (Cozen), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I just think it's funny that CNN analysts are asking pop stars their opinions on policy.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

She's on the cover of Rolling Stone again.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Despite his conspicuous prior absence, Ned actually confirmed Justyn's point by posting immediately (lemme check the timestamps .. ok, 2 minutes) after Matt mentioned him.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Why are mark s and Marcello arguing that a republican form of government is justification for an unengaged and uninformed electorate?

Why are Bert and Ernie doing that? Dear lord!

J (Jay), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

you wouldn't

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

and on an unrelated note, i'd like to inform the board that Allen Toussaint gave a lecture to my class yesterday, and when i raised my hand to ask him a question, he called on me and mistook me for a woman (only for a brief moment, he immediately corrected himself and said "sorry young gentleman"). damn, that made my day.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Dear lord, this thread! (temples throb)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

("calum in a wire hat" haha)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

you all said Good Charlotte were asshats. TURNS OUT THEY'RE JIMMY HATS!

(for Ally!)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Are Good Charlotte the Jocelyn Elderses of rock?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Is anyone else watching Britney on Dateline NBC?

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Friday, 16 June 2006 03:33 (nineteen years ago)

should i be

anthony easton (anthony), Friday, 16 June 2006 03:39 (nineteen years ago)

She's gonna cry about paparazzi in the next segment.

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Friday, 16 June 2006 03:40 (nineteen years ago)

"Mommy mistakes"

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Friday, 16 June 2006 03:41 (nineteen years ago)

Eh, this was pretty boring.
They showed that video of her almost dropping her baby with a drink in her other hand. She slipped on some "cobblestones". Showed the other "controversial" pics of her driving with her baby on her lap, which she explained as "country" and besides she was in a hurry (to get away from paparazzi), and the one with the car seat facing the wrong way. She broke down when Matt Lauer asked "What do you think it will take for the paparazzi to leave you alone? Is that your greatest wish?"

She said she's not going to record any more music for another year or two.
