also this album sounds perfect -- sunday morning!!

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:16 (fifteen years ago)

this album is nice to listen to (yeah jordan sunday morning seems like the perfect time) but it just feels so damn inconsequential to me; every song feels like an interlude. they're nice interludes, but i think i was wanting something more in the pt. 1 vein

k3vin k., Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:20 (fifteen years ago)

i think if you make something as epic as pt. 1, the best direction is to go in the one she went in

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:22 (fifteen years ago)

A very good album, and you named the two best songs (I'd include "Umm Hmm," which became essential summer listening)

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:28 (fifteen years ago)

it's really a beautiful thing

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

Yes. Really have started coming around on how this piece complements the first one.

Plus, I've been listening to it at least once a week, now, for what ... six months?

I do realize I've probably given "Gone Baby" a pass because I've waited years for someone to realize how Wings' "Arrow Through Me" was ripe for sampling.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

The groove is soooo deep.

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:34 (fifteen years ago)

According to iTunes:

Most played: "Love"
Least played: "Incense"

I just tried something: dropping "Gone Baby" after Van Helden's "U Don't Know Me."

i do love this album but i'm not sure it's top ten material for me

this isn't STRAWBERRY 0_o it's RAWBERRY (forksclovetofu), Monday, 23 August 2010 05:27 (fifteen years ago)

naw, it ain't

d4n, d4n, d4n (yaosah, yaosah, yaosah) (The Reverend), Monday, 23 August 2010 05:58 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, not top 10 of all time, no. The first one was; not this one.

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Monday, 23 August 2010 06:01 (fifteen years ago)

er, i meant top ten of the year.

this isn't STRAWBERRY 0_o it's RAWBERRY (forksclovetofu), Monday, 23 August 2010 06:39 (fifteen years ago)

album works best if you treat it as mostly throwaway leftover/fun/not totally finished sessions from the last album. ie inconsequential as someone said upthread. this is prob the most unessential album shes released.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 23 August 2010 10:29 (fifteen years ago)

i've come back to it a lot this year. "out my mind, just in time" is one of the best things she's ever done.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 23 August 2010 10:39 (fifteen years ago)

yeah thats a great one, but about 75%-85% of it just doesnt reward all the times ive returned to it. theres not enough there. even out my mind, just in time sounds kind of like a half hearted return to green eyes territory. i mean, its still good, but not as good as GE. its the type of album thats too easy for her.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 23 August 2010 10:42 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think i'd use the word half-hearted to describe any of this album, the hooks may meander or drift at times but there's a lot of feeling in it.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 23 August 2010 10:45 (fifteen years ago)

i think its being given more credit than is perhaps deserved because of who made it. or maybe i should replace half hearted with 'knackered'. she just sounds like her mind is somewhere else. which isnt in itself a particularly bad quality to have as a vocalist. cos yeah, there is feeling in it but theres not much craft. its just an album of sketches. reminds me a lot of princes from the vault album that he gave in to close his warners deal.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 23 August 2010 10:49 (fifteen years ago)

this is prob the most unessential album shes released.

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Monday, 23 August 2010 12:04 (fifteen years ago)

i wonder if it's just one of those records that's slightly confused by the expectations. i remember seeing in the mood for love having only seen chungking express, and i was just disappointed that it wasn't more offbeat fun, you know? there's so much preaching and communion in part one that part two must seem slight on account of its deficiency of these things. but it's a different record. it's full of jams, not songs. i like bopping around with fall in love on my headphones as much as i liked listening to me on the last one, but they're different kinds of albums. i could only see the songs as slight if you think they're attempting to be part-one-esque narrative songs rather than the slinky jams it seems she was shooting for.

schlump, Monday, 23 August 2010 12:31 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, the precedent for this one isn't, as advertised, Mama's Gun but instead Worldwide Underground.

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Monday, 23 August 2010 12:35 (fifteen years ago)

Sonically this sounds closest to Mama's Gun, but I just don't think the songwriting and singing are as sharp on this one.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 23 August 2010 12:36 (fifteen years ago)

xpost - thanks for setting me straight deej.

otm.

(I'm in the "I'd rather have come coffee" camp) (stevie), Monday, 23 August 2010 16:31 (fifteen years ago)

Worldwide Underground isn't bad just irrelevant, and this one isn't irrelevant at all.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 23 August 2010 16:33 (fifteen years ago)

This is a B+ record.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 23 August 2010 16:33 (fifteen years ago)

worldwide underground isn't 'irrelevant', though i don't really understand how you measure relevancy or indeed what use it is

(I'm in the "I'd rather have come coffee" camp) (stevie), Monday, 23 August 2010 16:35 (fifteen years ago)

Wait, who was calling WU bad? Certainly no one whose opinions on Badu I give a shit about.

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Monday, 23 August 2010 16:35 (fifteen years ago)

Of course, Badu : Me :: Wagner : Nietzsche

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Monday, 23 August 2010 16:36 (fifteen years ago)

It floats out of time and bears no relation to the records bookending it (which might be an attraction too). Also, it's the only album whose songs I don't care for at all, so even on its own terms it doesn't grab me.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 23 August 2010 16:36 (fifteen years ago)

worldwide underground has danger!!!!!! and i want you!!!!!!!!

horseshoe, Monday, 23 August 2010 16:37 (fifteen years ago)

Plus "Back in the Day" is maybe her most inviting, most comfortable jam ever.

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Monday, 23 August 2010 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

totally

worldwide underground has danger!!!!!! and i want you!!!!!!!!

^^^ + !!!!!!!

schlump, Monday, 23 August 2010 16:43 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, "Danger" is fine.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 23 August 2010 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

i want you is masterful

(I'm in the "I'd rather have come coffee" camp) (stevie), Monday, 23 August 2010 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

so when you say it is 'irrelevant' what you mean is 'i don't like it'?

(I'm in the "I'd rather have come coffee" camp) (stevie), Monday, 23 August 2010 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

there is feeling in it but theres not much craft.

Not at all. Obv the songwriting isn't as sharp as Mama's Gun or 4th World War, but it's more a record about sounds than anything and a lot of the sonic advancements carry over to 4WW.

d4n, d4n, d4n (yaosah, yaosah, yaosah) (The Reverend), Monday, 23 August 2010 17:05 (fifteen years ago)

OK, you guys won me over. I'll spin it again when I get home. It's really been years.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 23 August 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

is 'hollywood' on the us version or was it a euro bonus track? because that is a jam too.

(I'm in the "I'd rather have come coffee" camp) (stevie), Monday, 23 August 2010 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, don't get me wrong, it IS her weakest album of the '00s ones. But so what, et al?

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Monday, 23 August 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, the precedent for this one isn't, as advertised, Mama's Gun but instead Worldwide Underground.

this is otm, i totally hear it as WU pt 2 (and i love WU unconditionally).

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Monday, 23 August 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

i think it's easy to think of worldwide underground as, maybe not "irrelevant", but certainly a "mere" curio in the badu canon, not because of its quality but because of its relatively low-key release and reception, particularly her insistence that it wasn't an album, but an ep. an ep with 11 tracks that was album length. ok then erykah.

i fux with WU unconditionally, fwiw, and agree that no album with "danger" and "i want you" on it can ever be irrelevant. to an extent the same.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 23 August 2010 17:50 (fifteen years ago)

When all's said and done, the only Badu album I don't really spin much these days is the first one.

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Monday, 23 August 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

and even if a lot of return of the ankh consists of straight-up lifted samples and meandering jams, the same is true with it containing "window seat", "gone baby, don't be long" and "out my mind, just in time" - it's a beautifully paced and sequenced work that's absolutely gorgeous sounding, and almost all of it moves me on some level...and it feels like the right album for her to have made at this point in her career. so while it's not "OMG ALBUM OF DECADE" like 4th world war, it's still exactly what i wanted and almost totally satisfying - i wouldn't play god with it, in other words, apart from making her release the 320 of "jump up in the air (stay there)" in some form.
