this is weird but when doing the above ranking i had a hard time remembering what "ringtone rap" even was, as a distinct thing from snap music. like everything i'd think of would be snap stuff like yung joc, dem franchize boys, etc. is ringtone even a distinct period or set of hits in retrospect?
― richie goingham (some dude), Sunday, 22 August 2010 22:28 (thirteen years ago) link
there's some overlap, def, but i think of stuff like "crank dat", "party like a rockstar", "pop lock and drop it", "this is why i'm hot", etc
― d4n, d4n, d4n (yaosah, yaosah, yaosah) (The Reverend), Sunday, 22 August 2010 23:12 (thirteen years ago) link
young rap/one-hit-wonders with hook-driven songs that sold a lot of ringtones 2006-2007
"laffy taffy" "chain hang low" "walk it out" "this is why i'm hot" "crank that" "party like a rockstar" "ay bay bay"
xpost
― k'naamean (zvookster), Sunday, 22 August 2010 23:16 (thirteen years ago) link
oh yes, "ay bay bay" was the one i couldn't quite think of
― d4n, d4n, d4n (yaosah, yaosah, yaosah) (The Reverend), Sunday, 22 August 2010 23:22 (thirteen years ago) link
ok yeah Mims and Shop Boyz are probably ringtone posterboys. but yeah with a lot of those songs there's some overlap with snap or some other micro-genre/scene. soulja boy's kinda the beginning of something else (youtube rap?).
― richie goingham (some dude), Monday, 23 August 2010 00:29 (thirteen years ago) link
i'm not sure is soulja is the start of something else as much as the one who actually sold a million ringtones
as opposed to being derided as ringtone rap, which is what the others were
― J0rdan S., Monday, 23 August 2010 00:46 (thirteen years ago) link
there def is a youtube element to soulja tho -- obv the crank dat instruction video was a big thing, then there was his youtube channel which was pretty active for a time a little while ago, where he would do these 6 min freestyles when certain videos got a certain amount of views

i think Chamillionaire was the first rapper to sell a million ringtones (not counting old stuff like "Baby Got Back," anyway), but yeah "Ridin'" isn't really considered ringtone rap like "Crank Dat" is
― BACKSTABBERS: THEY SMILE @ U FACE (some dude), Monday, 23 August 2010 18:33 (thirteen years ago) link
when ppl say 'ringtone rap' tho theyre talking about the production, like there was this thing going around about how ay bay bay was 'made' for ringtones bcuz of the tinniness of the production

ok so i'm listening to this earl mixtape. i know you all thought that video i posted before was tame shit but the kid (who is what 16?) is rapping about raping women in like every song wtf. it's really good other than the lyrical content. i guess it's just some teenage shocking for the sake of it bullshit.

travis porter are so fun. "proud to be a problem" has been a kind of slow burner for me. "secondary girl", "lemme take you out", "sunshine on me" + "sumn i wont do" are all absolutely stupid fruity and crazy
― i feed these skreets (tpp), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 17:08 (thirteen years ago) link
not sure if anyone feels like talking about this, but noz has made this point a few times recently, and i think it's kind of interesting
Lately I’ve been thinking about how a lot of recent hip hop - street hip hop, which is to say real hip hop, that which hasn’t yet been polished by Jimmy Iovine - is entering a sort of punk period where technical competence is pushed completely to the background as a stylistic choice in favor of raw aggression and emotion. And then old people are like BUT THEY’RE ONLY PLAYING THREE CHORDS and young people are like duh.
