i have a love-hate feeling about elton john's catalog. half-love (someone saved my life tonight; levon), half-hate (island girl; the bitch is back; almost anything post 1979).

as far as 'unlikely places for a clusterfuck' goes, this is pretty good.

I like most of the bands in question! Ghost were decent enough but kinda boring live though, besides the guitar heroics of Kurihara.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Monday, 16 August 2010 01:33 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, 'Madman' is a cool LP too, has that guy B.J. Cole on slide guitar

Stormy Davis, Monday, 16 August 2010 01:34 (fifteen years ago)

B.J. Cole was *everywhere* in the 70s...

Stormy Davis, Monday, 16 August 2010 01:34 (fifteen years ago)

i knew we could all come together

I think this is otm:

boris are hit or miss but when they hit they hit hard

thing is, they're so hit or miss that I've stopped paying attention unless kurihara is in the mix.

original bgm, Monday, 16 August 2010 01:46 (fifteen years ago)

Ghost: love 'em, enjoy a good number of the albums. Saw them live a year or two ago in front of maybe 100 people and they killed it. Great psychedelic set that meandered and then refocused. My girlfriend loved them too.

Boris: awesome band, great live show. The albums can be hit-or-miss, but they have at least 9-10 albums that HIT and hit hard.

Melvins: legendary, and incredible. Can't beat their live show either. I've seen them blow numerous headliners off the stage as they knocked out the opening slot.

Fushitsusha: still exploring their catalog (CDs are hard to find/expensive!) but I've liked what I've heard, though not quite as much as...

Keiji Haino: ...whose solo efforts are generally quite awesome, and preferable to Fushitsusha.

Elton John: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

I like Ghost, I like Boris, but man, Rainbow bores me. Is Cloud Chamber much different?

Ghost were decent enough but kinda boring live though

sorry! maybe they had a bad day, but it seemed kinda routine.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Monday, 16 August 2010 11:10 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty crazy how Boris changed from "good" to "one of the lamest bands ever" in the space of two hours last night - they must be feeling pretty devastated right now :(

Melodic Man - I Need Geir (DJ Mencap), Monday, 16 August 2010 11:24 (fifteen years ago)

I like Ghost, Fushitsusha and Keiji Haino, but not Boris, Melvins or Elton John. Can someone give me a 30-page character assessment now?

emil.y, Monday, 16 August 2010 12:46 (fifteen years ago)

never heard any 'stoner garage' that sounds remotely like fushitsusha but sure wld like to!

Ward Fowler, Monday, 16 August 2010 12:59 (fifteen years ago)

Does any girlfriend not?

for the record my wife has no time for Elton John, except for that duet with Kiki Dee, which she really enjoys for some inexplicable reason

three months pass...

In light of this alleged Swedish Ghost now getting attention for their new album can we celebrate the real one, please. (Also, anyone catch Batoh's solo tour?)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 24 November 2010 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

one year passes...

Only just seen that Batoh is doing a few solo dates in Europe this month:

6/14/12 Barcelona
6/15/12 Hasselt
6/17/12 Geneva
6/18/12 Brighton
6/19/12 London

Pretty excited about seeing him, never managed to catch him or Ghost before (could be wrong but I think that Ghost only ever played at most just a couple of shows in the UK)

saw ghost in glasgow a few years ago, spectacularly stupid review here:

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 08:34 (fourteen years ago)

Oh ffs, where do you even start with that one?

You can do it Sun Myung Moon (NickB), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 08:39 (fourteen years ago)

well yes, that is stupid.

i saw them at atp around then too, besides that i don't recall them visiting here since i've known them. i think kurihara did a tour with damon & naomi? but yes. rare visitors. i don't know about on the rest of the dates, but the london one will see batoh do 'brain pulse music', which presumably means a performance on his new brain wave-controlled instrument: http://www.dragcity.com/products/brain-pulse-music-machine

Merdeyeux, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 11:56 (fourteen years ago)

well the moment i say that ghost are rare visitors i have last.fm recommend me this:

Monday 11 June 2012
Metal Hammer Golden Gods
Anthrax, Sabaton, Biohazard, Ghost, Watain
The indigO2
London,
United Kingdom

hmm...

Merdeyeux, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 12:08 (fourteen years ago)

Yeha, fucking Swedish metal Ghost keeps confusing me. Stop touring, Swedish Ghost! You should have googled, you doofuses.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 12:12 (fourteen years ago)

Every once in a while I will see news about Ghost pop up online and I get excited until I read and find out it is Swedish Ghost that is being discussed.

BEGONE.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 12:54 (fourteen years ago)

Sadly the Batoh gig last night fell a bit flat. Very low attendance (about 15 people including the support acts) and quite a short set (felt like it was only about 20 mins long!) and Batoh seemed to be having a few technical issues with the circuits that his brain pulse machine was plugged into. That said, I was quite surprised by the music the device generated. Hadn't heard the record and was expecting soothing drones or something (I read somewhere that it was being looked at for use in medical treatment), but what we actually got was like a flip-flop sequence of quiet momemnts punctuated by loud shrieks and blocks of quite agressive tones that sounded a lot like early electronic music. Not a big surprise I guess considering that the brain pulse machine was being fed into a couple of oscillators and some sort of feedback loop. Good while it lasted, but I left feeling a litle glum :(

Awww, shit. I really wanted to go but only found out about it at the weekend, and already had tickets for the Damo show tonight...

OT but I forgot almost the best bit of the whole evening: I saw A HEDGEHOG walking down the pavement in Beaconsfield Villas on my way home! Alive and snuffling about and everything - amazing!

Reading a few tweets and it looks like he also only played for twenty minutes or so in London last night. What's up with that? Should have brought a guitar on tour with him as well.

Just realized I had already post "<3" here in July. What else can I say about Ghost? Best band.

I'm about to order the new Live in Providence 2006 archival release. It has their Terrastock 6 show -- the first time I ever visited the States! Memories! And what an amazing set they played!
