well i totally wear hating Ross as a badge of honor, i'm ok with hate. i just think it's funny how some southern rappers can get past the usual stigmas with the right co-signs/label/beats and other guys stay on the shit list no matter how much better they are.

i'm wary of rap concerts for that reason. sometimes it comes across as karaoke.

The ATCQ reunion show I saw in 2006 was free of that, as they were all inspired. I'd prefer to see any rap concert in clubs too -- doesn't translate to arenas and stuff well at all

now that I said "karaoke" I half expect DJ Khaled to appear in this thread and start hollering

weird, i still associate wayne with the "hated on as a bad of honor" crowd. it took a loooong time for people to give up the "lil wayne killed hip-hop" posturing, and some still haven't

I still love Wayne for his cumulative output

back to the trap house is mostly way good -- probably being underrated here -- its def not as much fun wordplay-wise as his more recent stuff but its around that time (& the preceeding 'no pad no pencil' & chicken talk mixtapes) where he really solidified as an all-around character. compared to the mixtapes, prob not as good, but the mixdown is really high quality & there are tons of classics -- & imo 'i might be' is better than the jackie chain song

i mean, listen to 'i move chickens' & 'pillz' ('i might be' is an inferior version - the game, really??) & 'bird flu' & '16 fever' & 'i know why' -- all basically classics

imo 'no pad no pencil' 'chicken talk' & back to the traphouse are of a piece

the so icey boy mixtapes (vols 1 & 2) & the zone 6 to duval mixtape that came out right around then are also A+

The hooks and beats on the best bits of Back to the Traphouse ("I Move Chickens", "Bird Flu", "I Might Be", "I Know Why", "Ballers") are so great that I really don't miss the wordplay.

& there is still wordplay there, a lot of it really funny. its just not as dense or ... systematic, as his later stuff
