(I still maintain that all of the original metal albums are hard rock as I don't really see any direct link between the Black Sabbath I know and the Iron Maiden I know).
Did you vote in that poll? Either way, what would you vote for?

I remember the day I came to the realization that people my own age listened to country music. Up until then, I thought it was just my grandmother's music. When someone mentioned buying the new Randy Travis album, I thought they were completely kidding. And I was going to school in Alabama!

would strongly recommend AAL to Dan, actually - really melodically intricate and arresting, the only thing he might baulk at is the lack of vocals

Aldo what do you think of the poll?
I didn't vote in the "first metal album" poll because no one has ever actually explained to my satisfaction what metal is, so I couldn't decide what the first metal album was.
lol afaik he was always into heavier stuff; we bonded over Anthrax shortly after we first met
The bands represented here that I voted for from the 70s/80s are bands that made it into my house via my older brothers and father (Aerosmith, Rush, Led Zepplin) or bands that my close friends turned me on to (Iron Maiden, Anthrax). Most of the kids in my school, due to the time period and to where we were, had WEIRD ideas about race and most of them spanned the gamut of albums represented on this poll (possibly not the most extreme end of things but that is likely because they didn't know it existed). Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest (btw never had a problem with JP, just didn't care one way or the other), Bon Jovi, Poison, Winger, Skid Row, Ratt, Twisted Sister, Scorpions, Cinderella, Dokken, Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Aerosmith, Rush, Megadeth, AC/DC... all of these bands were very, very popular with a lot of kids.
yeah, the dude who spent the years from 1994 through 2000 listening primarily to techno/rave/acid/dnb is REALLY gonna have a problem with instrumental music

I'm really surprisd, to be honest. My tracks listing had far more extreme records placing than the albums one (which I thought was pretty canonical), yet the album listing has been really, really varied.
Not that surprised at the amount of Boris placing (I'm not going to say Hipster Metal but you could see a lot of people you might not expect to vote in this poll doing so, and for Boris), but amazed by the amount of doom and BM doing exceptionally well. Would never have guessed at multiple YOB placings to be honest and thought I was probably the only one who voted for more than one Corrupted. And Grief! How did so many of their records place?
Maybe the strangest thing though is that the BM placings are actually intelligent i.e. it doesn't appear to be random ilxors skewing the votes, they seem to be in roughly the order (wrt which albums are better than others by the same band) as is generally thought. I don't think I voted for much BM if any, mainly because I don't think of it as truly great, just something I'm listening to and loving at the time, but stoked at how much is making it.

Why does serious metal hate the finer points of graphic design, btw? The logos and album art are the stuff of 14 year-old boys doodling on canvas binders with blue ink pens in history class.
