i had to google the lyrics for that JA song, been a while since i heard that album. Some good stuff on it but yeah, that song.

I think darkthrone have denied being racists/nazis too fwiw

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:43 (thirteen years ago) link

I love that this poll is so fucked that we have to determine which bands are racists and which aren't.

fwiw this is why I don't really pay attention to metal, even though apparently half of my musical predilections fall into that category

I did not pay a cent for my copy of Transylvanian Hunger and I have no idea what they're saying.

really not that many 'good' metal bands are racist - the ones that are receive lots of attention

I have one friend who has a pretty good black metal collection of a few hundred albums, and he doesn't like any by Darkthrone as far as I know. I've heard some bits, nothing compelling enough to convince me to check them out more thoroughly. He also doesn't like Ulver, but I do like their recent one enough to be curious about their earlier ones.

I've read plenty of Enslaved interviews. They're intelligent, enlightened guys who are not remotely racist.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 13 August 2010 15:45 (thirteen years ago) link

no other genre screams "white music for white people" as much as metal, particularly when talking about the extreme subgenres (I still maintain that all of the original metal albums are hard rock as I don't really see any direct link between the Black Sabbath I know and the Iron Maiden I know)

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:46 (thirteen years ago) link

any genre of music has racist or sexist or homophobic or plain old bigots. metal is no worse than others.

Am feeling pretty bad now - got my wires completely crossed about Enslaved to the extent to which they seem like the sort of band I'd really dig - really, really hating on whomever suggested they might be racist.

googling "racist hip-hop" is simultaneously totally expected and really, really confusing

ciderpress, Friday, 13 August 2010 15:52 (thirteen years ago) link

btw Dan, I know you mentioned in the past, one of the reasons you hated metal was because of the people at your school who liked it (and why you were wary of jj at first), but were they into thrash stuff like slayer/anthrax/metallica/megadeth, hair/glam metal or iron maiden/priest stuff?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:53 (thirteen years ago) link

yes

I remember the day I came to the realization that people my own age listened to country music. Up until then, I thought it was just my grandmother's music. When someone mentioned buying the new Randy Travis album, I thought they were completely kidding. And I was going to school in Alabama!

would strongly recommend AAL to Dan, actually - really melodically intricate and arresting, the only thing he might baulk at is the lack of vocals

Aldo what do you think of the poll?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 16:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Did you vote in that poll? Either way, what would you vote for?

I didn't vote in the "first metal album" poll because no one has ever actually explained to my satisfaction what metal is, so I couldn't decide what the first metal album was.

what hair metal was jj into before he got into heavier stuff?

lol afaik he was always into heavier stuff; we bonded over Anthrax shortly after we first met

The bands represented here that I voted for from the 70s/80s are bands that made it into my house via my older brothers and father (Aerosmith, Rush, Led Zepplin) or bands that my close friends turned me on to (Iron Maiden, Anthrax). Most of the kids in my school, due to the time period and to where we were, had WEIRD ideas about race and most of them spanned the gamut of albums represented on this poll (possibly not the most extreme end of things but that is likely because they didn't know it existed). Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest (btw never had a problem with JP, just didn't care one way or the other), Bon Jovi, Poison, Winger, Skid Row, Ratt, Twisted Sister, Scorpions, Cinderella, Dokken, Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Aerosmith, Rush, Megadeth, AC/DC... all of these bands were very, very popular with a lot of kids.

would strongly recommend AAL to Dan, actually - really melodically intricate and arresting, the only thing he might baulk at is the lack of vocals

yeah, the dude who spent the years from 1994 through 2000 listening primarily to techno/rave/acid/dnb is REALLY gonna have a problem with instrumental music
