Those traits are emphasized in some genres (including some that i like, and some that I don't) more than in other genres, Shakey.

Wow. I'm amazed, although not entirely surprised, that this exists.

Jeezzzzus! Won't this thread ever fuckin' expire?

Bottom line: DMB sucks, and therefore you must suck for liking them.

Case closed. Next?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I kiss you

The Cure appears to be another "drink the Kool-Aid" band only I really, really like their Ecto-Cooler flavor.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

So wait...since YOU don't like them, they automatically suck? Which means I suck as well? Yes, that makes perfect sense. Thank you for clearing that up.

Allison (Allison), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the logic is as follows:

DMB sucks -> Alex (et al) doesn't like them.
DMB sucks -> You suck for liking them.

.. just as clarification ...

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"Earnest Rock, as performed by groups like Hootie and the Blowfish and Counting Crows, thrives as a reaction to the overblown tendencies of the musical extremes elsewhere in the marketplace. While this brand of music might be more “meaningful” than, say, Destiny’s Child, it’s also achingly dull in comparison to the catharsis and passion fueling a Nirvana or a PJ Harvey (or a Le Tigre or a Yo La Tengo).."

I love how the sarcasm of this one doesn't really hit til the ironic punchline about all those exciting PJ Harvey and Le Tigre and (this is the obvious clue) Yo La Tengo records. Like, if only all those clueless Counting Crows fans heard those, they'd never turn back!

olga, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

catharses can be slow, guys. seriously.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, but they DON'T suck. You just think they do.

Allison (Allison), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The other funny (and clearly intentional) thing is that Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Le Tigre, and Yo La Tengo present themselves as just as "earnest," if not more so, as Hootie and the Crows! (Not to mention the stupid dismissal-of-random-r&b-act-as-meaningless crap.)

olga, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Allison! You're back!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

oddly, nick catucci compares dmb to destiny's child here:

http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0112/catucci.php

chuck, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmmm.....DMB versus Destiny's Child.

There's a special ring in Hell that awaits me where these are the only two musical options.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

at least Destiny's Child doesn't try to pass themselves off as being "meaningful" or "deep"....

¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿ (ex , Wednesday, 30 June 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

well, they do have that one song that says "all you women, independent, throw your handcuffs at me" or however it goes.

chuck, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

throw your handcuffs at me

hahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

But they aren't good, Allison. You just think so.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 1 July 2004 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I am completely digging this "drink the Kool-Aid" metaphor because it completely explains my musical tastes! In general, if I buy into a band/artist, I *completely* buy into them and am hard-pressed to find something by them that I dislike. Conversely, if an artist makes a bad impression on me, it's very, very, VERY improbable that I will ever warm to them.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

They are good, they have talent. They just don't fit your tastes.

Allison (Allison), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Allison: I like Phish so much more than DMB.

¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿ (ex , Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The guy working the heavy construction equipment down the street seems to have a lot of talent but he creates noise which is really annoying.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Good Lord, in two weeks time we'll probably all have forgotten why DMB are so bad and hated! Perhaps a quickly-assembled print version of this thread should be made available.

Can this be the cover?

Sure, Nick & Buzz prolly won't mind. For awhile.

briania (briania), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds like a personal problem, Jon.

Allison (Allison), Thursday, 1 July 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd forgotten how goddamn awesome Alex in NYC was on this thread. I just laughed for a half hour.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Friday, 22 October 2004 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, I've totally changed my mind about this music. Oh wait, no I haven't.

J (Jay), Friday, 22 October 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it because "the [Dave Matthews] band tour bus apparently dumped up to 800 pounds of liquid human waste into the Chicago River this summer"?

http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,15208,00.html?tnews

Nemo (JND), Monday, 25 October 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

that is an amazing story. if they would just get fined for the air pollution, too.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 25 October 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"According to state Attorney General Lisa Madigan, the waste rained down on a passing tour boat, with many of the 100 passengers struck with falling feces in the mouth and eyes."

Nemo (JND), Monday, 25 October 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I just hope DMB doesn't attempt to "leak" their latest releases like this again.

Nemo (JND), Monday, 25 October 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I kinda like some of their stuff.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 25 October 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost)
We had a couple of threads on this too:
If I don't see how this is much different from listening to him...
What would have been a better title for my thread about Dave Matthews' bus allegedly dumping its "brownish-yellow", "foul-smelling muck" into the Chicago River and onto a boat full of tourists?
Scroll down on the second thread to read about the CLASSIC follow-up re:DMB offering to provide DNA evidence that it wasn't their shit.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 25 October 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i was out at lunch today and "crash" came on just as i was making my way out the door. "Mostly what I remember is people gagging"

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 25 October 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

that thread will never hang...

this thread will become the milestone by which all threads will be measured.

all shall pass thru the DMB thread, or they shall perish.

eedd, Tuesday, 26 October 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Damn, why do I always get the news so late? I really wanted to started a thread called "Dave Matthews shits in your general direction".
