So not just the wrong thread but the wrong board entirely here... but I felt I should say 'Valhalla Rising' is the most metal film I've ever seen! Like Hawk The Slayer for grownups, if that doesn't make it sound too rubbish. Don't want to spoilerize it but if Wardruna were a film, I reckon this would be it. Really ace ambient, drone, Krautmetal/Current 93 meets Coil meets Hair and Skin Trading Co. soundtrack by two guys called Peter Peter & Peter Kyad. There's a little bit about them on the internet but if anyone could tell me if any of their other stuff is worth buying I'd appreciate it.

Oh I want to see that so bad. The international trailer looks fantastic. The US trailer is lackluster in comparison.

It looks amazing. Kind of like Von Trier, post Dogme 95 but without any of the gross over stylization/perfume ad bits that marred Antichrist but with all of its deranged violence left intact. But in other ways a bit like Greenway... every set up is framed like a painting. And in some ways like a Takeshi Kitano flick... lots of broody, contemplative scenes, that stretch on and on, occasionally punctuated with extremely unpleasant and implacable violence.

But with Vikings. And drone metal.

Duran (Doran), Thursday, 12 August 2010 21:49 (fifteen years ago)

Oooh, that does look good.

Synopsis:

For years, One-Eye, a mute warrior of supernatural strength, has been held prisoner - forced to fight for his life and the amusement of his pagan slavers. Aided by a boy, he finds his moment, furiously kills his captors and together they escape, beginning an odyssey through an unknown land. After falling in with a band of Vikings, One-Eye and his young companion find they must confront terrible fate in the quest for their freedom.

So the new Kylesa seems to be channeling early-90s indie rock in a big way. You know, back when the big riffs were still cool, like Sugar and Drive Like Jehu. Good stuff.

Don't take this the wrong way cos I do like those bands to an extent, but that sounds really wrong for Kylesa. I missed them with Converge the other week for some reason.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 12 August 2010 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

Some people aren't going to like the album, that's for sure. The sludge has been thinned out a fair bit, with more emphasis on psych influences.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:11 (fifteen years ago)

seems to me like kylesa have increasingly been steering in that direction for a few albums now. last album definitely had its share of 90s indie.

original bgm, Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:26 (fifteen years ago)

I'm interested to hear the new Kylesa. Not so interested in seeing Valhalla Rising, which bums me out. I love the subject matter, but hate Refn's other movies. I thought the first Pusher was boring, turned off Bronson and the second Pusher movie halfway through, and never even bothered with #3.

"Thergothon has me wondering what other funeral doom I might enjoy."

Do you have Asunder's last album on Profound Lore?

― Nate Carson, Wednesday, August 11, 2010 6:01 AM

No, I hadn't heard that one but I gave it a listen.
It seems difficult to capture the strangeness and mystery
conveyed by bands like Thergothon and Unholy, but Asunder does
not a bad job of it. I enjoyed Works Will Come Undone for the most part... Thanks!

seren, Friday, 13 August 2010 01:19 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe I need to give the new Ihsahn another chance.
I found his voice hard to listen to and some of his song structures
a little showy and lacking a good flow. The saxophone is cool though!

seren, Friday, 13 August 2010 01:23 (fifteen years ago)

Over at Hellbound I posted an interview with my favourite new Canadian metal band, a wickedly good female guitar/drums duo called Mares of Thrace, whose debut album is a cool blend of Neurosis and the Jesus Lizard: http://www.hellbound.ca/2010/08/introducing-mares-of-thrace/

They're a ferocious live act, and the drummer is one of the better female metal drummers I've seen. Well worth checking out!

― A. Begrand, Wednesday, August 11, 2010 4:05 AM

Man, this band is super badass! I like them better than Jesus Lizard!
For me, they bring to mind a little some of the better resurgences of No Wave.

seren, Friday, 13 August 2010 01:42 (fifteen years ago)

Glad you like!

A. Begrand, Friday, 13 August 2010 02:42 (fifteen years ago)

Unperson: I've not seen those films but I'm gathering it was more of a personal film for the director and perhaps one he took slightly more seriously. Especially if all the distraught comments on IMDB from angry action movie fans are anything to go by.

Locked in, rapping with my corpsepaint and a mullet,
Let's see how my sword stands up to your bullets
Like Hecate, I'm enthroned, and if you disrespect
You'll be lying in a Graveland like Oystein Aarseth

I grab the mic, and I drop Norwegian coldness
Truly underground, don't need no radio hits
Bringing obscure sounds to your town, you better harken
I bring pride pure white like my homie Rob Darken

I do not like Christians, Samoth-I-Am
Burning down churches and I don't give a goddamn
Now I'd advise you not to fuck with this
Or I'll disfigure your face, and leave you looking like Mortiis

Marduk duck goose, I choose you to be my victim
I rip you up and stab you in the back like Bard Eithun
I rock cold like a Blizzard, with the mark of a Beast
Ripping up posers right and left I bring 'em down to their knees

And like the Nightspirit, thus I have spake
Don't try to disrespect, cuz that's a big mistake
Like a Beherit EP, sorry to end so soon
But this is me signing off, Under a Funeral Moon

I saw Slayer last night. Ive seen them about 5 times since 1988 and this may be the best show Ive seen. Two words that may be proof that there is a god: Dave Lombardo. I cant even describe how good he is.

Melodic Man - I Need Geir (DJ Mencap), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:10 (fifteen years ago)

Listening to Kylesa's new one now. They've finally become great on this album; it's like a cross between Baroness and recent/current Melvins. The double drumming thing really, really works, and they've got these psychedelic/90s indie rock guitar melodies that are just fucking awesome. Highly, highly recommended.

plate of dinosaurs (San Te), Friday, 13 August 2010 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

I'm agreeing with Phil, the Kylesa's really good. Not as heavy (when they were sludgy they were a less interesting band), but they've really ogt the melodies down now.

A. Begrand, Friday, 13 August 2010 18:58 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't listened to a new Iron Maiden album in 15 years, and haven't liked one in 20, but pfunk prodded me into playing The Final Frontier one, and I like it! Solid, shamelessly unexaggerated and nearly nuanced! Kinda reminds me, in hard-rock feel, of that last Uriah Heep album from a couple years ago. The tonal skew between the music and the cover art has gotten pretty wide, though, and this sounds about as far from a Frontier or a Finality as anything; quite the opposite, it sounds like they're settling into a groove they might be able to sustain indefinitely.

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 13 August 2010 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

The Maiden album is holding up beautifully. I'm enjoying it quite a bit more than A Matter of Life and Death (which I really dug)...it's amazing how strong this band still is. And yeah, I love those 70s riffs by Smith on the first third of the album.

A. Begrand, Friday, 13 August 2010 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

Like many others, I make fun of Janick Gers for his onstage cavorting, but he's a pretty great interview subject. I talked to him last week, and the results are up now at MSN.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Monday, 16 August 2010 02:28 (fifteen years ago)

Nice interview, I really enjoyed that.

AMG's review of the album is really wishy-washy.

A. Begrand, Monday, 16 August 2010 02:58 (fifteen years ago)

Got a link? I didn't even see it on the site.

Never mind; found it. Yeah, I think it's much better than Rividividavia does, obviously.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 16 August 2010 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

anybody looking forward to the new Blind Guardian? the first song I heard from it sounded like it harkened back to their earlier days. which is good cuz the last two albums were abysmal.

plate of dinosaurs (San Te), Monday, 16 August 2010 16:33 (fifteen years ago)

Listening to "The Will to Survive," the previously unreleased song on the 3CD Cowboys From Hell deluxe reissue. I know why it didn't make the album; it's a good song, but it's a real mishmash: the main riff sounds like Van Halen circa 1981, Anselmo's in full Halford/Tate power metal mode, and the backing vocals (and the bridge, and the guitar solo) are howlingly '80s.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Monday, 16 August 2010 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

I wouldn't mind hearing that. one thing I hate about Phil Anselmo is how he let his voice go cuz he thought singing in falsetto is so "gay", I liked his multifaceted voice, I mean he still screamed on the debut!

plate of dinosaurs (San Te), Monday, 16 August 2010 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

It should be noted that, while the new Blind Guardian is quite good, the first single is somewhat misleading. It's a pretty varied album, and while there are a couple of old-school tracks, they also have medieval ballads and orchestra pieces. But then again, I really liked the last album, and the songs that were buried under the production in At Night at the Opera were actually pretty great (check out the stripped down versions on the Live record).

Kylesa - Spiral Shadow, Oct 26. Can't wait! I wonder if it will feature more Baizley artwork? One of the indie guitar influences they namechecked in the Decibel interview was Built To Spill, but I think more for the recording and mixing of the guitars rather than style. They also talked about Flower Travelin' Band, which they've been touting since last year (http://www.crushermagazine.com/features2_09/featkylesa.htm). I like that they mentioned Atomic Rooster too!

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 16 August 2010 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

thanks for the warning Jeff. like, the last studio album was ok for more immediate songs and such, I'd almost say it was like their Black album, but it felt so sterile to me. Night at the Opera was to me the equivalent of being forced to eat a one-ton cake when all you want is a cupcake.

Like there were great melodies/harmonies and such but it was so overblown. The 15 minute lead single from that though was one of my favorites, though it worked on occasion. I did like the live album though admittedly don't remember how those songs sounded on it.

I hope not, his stuff has been done to death. It doesn't even suit the Kvelertak album.

A. Begrand, Monday, 16 August 2010 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

I love his art. It's sometimes even better than the content of the albums.

Queensryche's Empire album has always stuck in my craw, it has some good songs and some atrocious ones, a fascinating record but also a bloated one, and the new 20th anniversary edition only hammers home just how much better a band they were before they got all MOR on us. The bonus live disc is loaded with tepid performances of Empire, songs that rely too heavily on backing vocal/synth tracks, but when they do stuff like "Roads to Madness" and "Take Hold of the Flame", it's like night and day, they absolutely kill on those songs. It's a fleeting reminder that once upon a time, before they started imitating Pink Floyd ballads, they were one of the most exciting American heavy metal bands of the 80s.

Blind Guardian is pimping j0hn's Jakarta post on their new album on facebook, lol I love it...

"yes
the singer still sounds like he's afraid of a monster
and yes

his subject matter still comes
from science fiction and fantasy books
and there's a dragon on the album cover

and then what's more get this
this dragon, flanked by two dudes with axes,
is emerging from a fucking pyramid"
