I saw High on Fire circa that album, I think, at some lame show in Chicago called the Festival of the Extreme that featured Motorhead, Mortis (I think?) and was supposed to be hosted by Dana Plato, but she killed herself a few days before. There were something like 11 people standing there watching HIgh on Fire, half with fingers in ears but all smiling like children.

Nice list so far. Some albums from these results that are new to me and my first impressions:

Lord Weird Slough Feg - Twilight of the Idols
This is okay. I don't really like the vocals or the bagpipes. Reminds me of Iron Maiden I guess, but I don't think I needed another Iron Maiden (I do like Iron Maiden). I like it enough to give it a few more chances to overwhelm me though.

Trouble - Manic Frustration
I don't really like this. Sounds like corny late 80's metal with bad vocals and too much of that high-pitched wailing that I can pretty much only tolerate from Rob Halford.

Drudkh - Blood in Our Wells
I really like this. Not sure that I like it as metal qua metal. I'm not sure if I would put this on if I was in the mood to listen to metal, but it's really good (and clearly metal) and would definitely fulfill some other type of music listening mood for me.

Enslaved - Below the Lights
I liked this, but it's too symphonic for my tastes. I like my metal pummeling, like Seasons in the Abyss or Leviathan, not so epic and grandiose.

High on Fire - Surrounded by Thieves
This is pretty good on initial listen, but I need a few more listens to digest it, I guess. Pretty good though. Pretty thunderous.

Venom - Actually listened to At War With Satan, and not the album that ranked in this list, but I thought it was really great. Loved everything about it. Looking forward to giving it another listen, and also checking out Black Metal and Welcome to Hell.

the second song I played made me just want to listen to Labradford rather than wait for something to happen

(the songs were "Breathing From the Shallows" and "The Great Cessation Pt 1")

(I only listened to about 3 min of both on Youtube)

Here's what I wrote about The Great Cessation at the end of 2009, when I chose it as my favorite record of that year (pardon the flowery cheese - it comes naturally):

Yob was one of the first bands I discovered when I got back into metal. Their combination of epic build and sustained release is like a snapping wire in a vacuum, the tension building until it breaks and then carries that momentum indefinitely. Listening to this changes my state of mind. It isn’t a meditative cleansing like Grandeur Of Hair, but a kind of heightened awareness; a releasing of constraints that keep things distant. I swear I have a better understanding of the world and its possibilities afterward. Also, it does a damn good job of freeing me of whatever hangups I was fretting about before putting it on, thus living up to it’s title. All this justification of purpose should not downplay just how amazing this album sounds. Scheidt’s vocals have never been better, from his clean soaring lines to his growls of multitrack menace; the band has never sounded as together, the moments of space amidst the tumult natural and effective. This is doom with feeling, as odd as that sounds.
