Could Shout at the Devil make it, maybe?
Let's hope not.

With so few to go, and so many shoo-ins, I suppose I am hoping for some challopy stuff like Motley Crue or, I dunno, Accept or something. Or Anvil. But at least 50 slots are all but obvious, right?
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 12:04 (fifteen years ago)
I dunno. It's hard to tell. I think many of what I would have considered "obvious" top 100 albums have already been named.
― more lunacy and witchcraft! (kkvgz), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 12:06 (fifteen years ago)
oh, but there are some obvious-obvious ones that haven't appeared (Sabbath, Zeppelin, AC/DC, Metallica, Slayer, Saint Vitus ...)
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 12:09 (fifteen years ago)
True, there'll probably be 5 or so Sabbath albums, 4 or 5 Metallicas, an AC/DC or two, 1 Slayer for sure - maybe more. Was In Utero nominated - I agree that Blach is the most fitting Nirvana record for a metal poll, but I doubt it got enough votes to make it in. Badmotorfinger will show up. Maybe some of Death's proggier stuff (we've already seen Scream Bloody Gore and I think that more people on ILM go for the 1990s albums). Rust in Peace will be up there.
― more lunacy and witchcraft! (kkvgz), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 12:17 (fifteen years ago)
Oh Angel Dust will be in this for sure.
― more lunacy and witchcraft! (kkvgz), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 12:18 (fifteen years ago)
Baroness' Blue Album might post. Deicide - Legion. More Obituary?
― more lunacy and witchcraft! (kkvgz), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 12:25 (fifteen years ago)
I'm hoping Meshuggah, Morbid Angel and Cynic will show up.

yeah, ive never even heard a full soundgarden lp but from the singles ive heard i cant imagine any of their stuff is better than the songs on nevermind
― markers, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 13:33 (fifteen years ago)
I hate nirvana. like serious hatred. i find nothing redeeming about them, call it a blind spot or something-i dont know or care. I will never willingly listen to a song of theirs for the rest of my life.
― Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 13:33 (fifteen years ago)
and they dont belong on this thread.
i love nirvana and soundgarden and alice in chains and pearl jam and mudhoney and melvins and screaming trees get it up ye! ;)
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 13:35 (fifteen years ago)
grunge deserves to be classic just for the whole immmmmm goooiinnn huuunnggrrry thing imo
― markers, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 13:37 (fifteen years ago)
Nirvana I'm pretty ambivalent about (nice tunes, I guess, but more a case of "right place, right time" popularity) but Soundgarden and specifically Chris Cornell are the fucking nadir of hair metal-influenced hard-rock grunge bullshit.
― ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 13:37 (fifteen years ago)

I stop caring somewhere in between Mudhoney and Nirvana...
― ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 13:39 (fifteen years ago)
nonono Pearl Jam ARE awful (although their fans maintain their later albums are their best music, y'know, the albums you or I have never heard) but Soundgarden are really INTERESTING and cool and heavy!

I like some of Pearl Jam a lot, but it looks like they ain't troubling these countdowns. Also there were definitely more than seven grunge bands - I recall Stone Temple Pilots as an especially foul example
― Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 13:52 (fifteen years ago)
ugh stp
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)
you know, everyone picks STP as THE grunge band to hate but they were actually kind of great; I don't know that they had a bad single
― people are for loving (HI DERE), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)
i like all the big Seattle grunge bands to some extent, but Soundgarden is the only one I voted for here, because they pretty much are for all intents and purposes metal, more than any of the others except maybe AIC
― dark twisted fanta girl (some dude), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 13:54 (fifteen years ago)
I'd agree with that, too
― people are for loving (HI DERE), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 13:55 (fifteen years ago)
STP were only vaguely grunge for one album. They were lumped in for marketing convenience -- early 90s west coast hard rock = grunge.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 13:55 (fifteen years ago)
you mean the fact they sounded like an amalgam of PJ and AIC was just marketing convenience?
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 13:57 (fifteen years ago)
"Evenflow" is a great song btw, fuiud
― people are for loving (HI DERE), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 13:59 (fifteen years ago)
PJ is only vaguely grunge as well. Both they and STP are pretty much Zeppelin, though PJ veers Hendrix. Classic rock-o-rama all the same.
Never liked Soundgarden, but "Jesus Christ Pose" is one of my fave songs. Def. more metal than those other bands.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 14:02 (fifteen years ago)
the 1st soundgarden album is grrrrrrrrrreat and i warmed to loud love(half of it is brilliant) the weakest one is down on the upside, and its still a decent album.

Will there be an appearance of Naked City and/or Painkiller? Or have those bands been forgotten?
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 14:10 (fifteen years ago)
glad we have grunge because i dont know what ninth grade wouldve been like without puddle of mudd
― markers, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 14:11 (fifteen years ago)
I don't remember if any of Zorn's jazzgrind was nominated. Comes from a different tradition even if the results were comparable so I'm not sure they fit the continuum this poll was aiming for.
