I'm not gonna bother searching for posts on other threads where you disparage the Flaming Lips, undie rap, emo, or noise bands - suffice to say I know you've done it and I just don't care that much to spend the effort to go point by point in order to somehow categorically and empirically prove that you're basically just a reactionary provocateur.

But I wouldn't mind a little more of your ludicrous "Chambers Brothers are dub metal" spiel. That shit was funny.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Really?

Then post here and explain what's so "ridiculous" about it, moron:

RFI : Dub metal

chuck, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, do you EVER argue with people's actual *idea*s -- as, in what they actually SAY -- instead of your bizarre paranoid perceptions of their intentions behind those ideas, shakey? maybe you do; i dunno, usually i find your posts on this board completely ignorable, so it's possible, i guess. but if not, you might try it some time.

chuck, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the drumming on the one Dave Matthews album I have.

BTW, in the UK 'undie' is another word for 'pants'.

mei (mei), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think they can be dismissed as homogenous (at least not like DMB fans and their "they're the greatest musicians in the world!
Shakey, I was thinking along the lines of your "drinking the cool-aid" comment -- I wasn't referring to the specific props given to DMB from his cult (about his musicianship, range of styles, etc.)
With B&S and Coldplay, their fans (who represent a wide-reaching demographic) rattle on about how their songs have changed their lives, how deeply they're touched by their albums, and how they haven't felt that way about any band since the Smiths.
On the other hand, the non-kool aid drinkers don't "get" those bands AT ALL, to the point of not being able to stand any of their music.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

oh chuck, I just enjoy needling you. If you had any ideas to speak of instead of an endless litany of bands and a lot of ass-covering platitudes maybe I would bother but it just isn't worth it. For example, you "argue" that the genres you listed emphasize "virtuosity and spontaneity and transcendence and complexity and authenticity", while being acting like you're unaware that such vague categories could be found in just about ANY genre. Anyway, keep those insults coming. Comedy GOLD.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

rabid fans who can't imagine why anybody wouldn't like them

Chuck, isn't that precisely what you are in relation to Big & Rich and countless other pop country rubbish acts?

Thor (Thor), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"Shakey, I was thinking along the lines of your "drinking the cool-aid" comment -- I wasn't referring to the specific props given to DMB from his cult (about his musicianship, range of styles, etc.)

Ah, point taken. I'm surprised people would react that way to Coldplay - I don't know anyone who gives a shit about them in the states and they seem so deliberately pedestrian. Although when I travel their presence on the airwaves does seem ubiquitous... maybe they strike a nerve us yanks just don't have.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I have lots of friends who don't like Big & Rich, Thor, and I do think they're missing something, though that's fine with me; but sure, if you like something a LOT, no matter WHAT it is, it can be hard to imagine why somebody else wouldn't. (I can sure imagine why somebody would hate Toby Keith of Montgomery Gentry, though, despite the fact that I like them.) So I wasn't excluding myself at all. In fact, my point is that Dave Matthews fans who defend what they love aren't unique at all. Fans of ALL bands act like that sometimes.

>... emphasize "virtuosity and spontaneity and transcendence and complexity and authenticity", while being acting like you're unaware that such vague categories could be found in just about ANY genre

chuck, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Those traits are emphasized in some genres (including some that i like, and some that I don't) more than in other genres, Shakey.

chuck, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. I'm amazed, although not entirely surprised, that this exists.

Jeezzzzus! Won't this thread ever fuckin' expire?

Bottom line: DMB sucks, and therefore you must suck for liking them.

Case closed. Next?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I kiss you

The Cure appears to be another "drink the Kool-Aid" band only I really, really like their Ecto-Cooler flavor.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

So wait...since YOU don't like them, they automatically suck? Which means I suck as well? Yes, that makes perfect sense. Thank you for clearing that up.

Allison (Allison), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the logic is as follows:

DMB sucks -> Alex (et al) doesn't like them.
DMB sucks -> You suck for liking them.

.. just as clarification ...

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"Earnest Rock, as performed by groups like Hootie and the Blowfish and Counting Crows, thrives as a reaction to the overblown tendencies of the musical extremes elsewhere in the marketplace. While this brand of music might be more “meaningful” than, say, Destiny’s Child, it’s also achingly dull in comparison to the catharsis and passion fueling a Nirvana or a PJ Harvey (or a Le Tigre or a Yo La Tengo).."

I love how the sarcasm of this one doesn't really hit til the ironic punchline about all those exciting PJ Harvey and Le Tigre and (this is the obvious clue) Yo La Tengo records. Like, if only all those clueless Counting Crows fans heard those, they'd never turn back!

olga, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

catharses can be slow, guys. seriously.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, but they DON'T suck. You just think they do.

Allison (Allison), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The other funny (and clearly intentional) thing is that Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Le Tigre, and Yo La Tengo present themselves as just as "earnest," if not more so, as Hootie and the Crows! (Not to mention the stupid dismissal-of-random-r&b-act-as-meaningless crap.)

olga, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Allison! You're back!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

oddly, nick catucci compares dmb to destiny's child here:

http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0112/catucci.php

chuck, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmmm.....DMB versus Destiny's Child.

There's a special ring in Hell that awaits me where these are the only two musical options.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

at least Destiny's Child doesn't try to pass themselves off as being "meaningful" or "deep"....

¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿ (ex , Wednesday, 30 June 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

well, they do have that one song that says "all you women, independent, throw your handcuffs at me" or however it goes.

chuck, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

throw your handcuffs at me

hahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

But they aren't good, Allison. You just think so.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 1 July 2004 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I am completely digging this "drink the Kool-Aid" metaphor because it completely explains my musical tastes! In general, if I buy into a band/artist, I *completely* buy into them and am hard-pressed to find something by them that I dislike. Conversely, if an artist makes a bad impression on me, it's very, very, VERY improbable that I will ever warm to them.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

They are good, they have talent. They just don't fit your tastes.

Allison (Allison), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Allison: I like Phish so much more than DMB.

¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿ (ex , Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The guy working the heavy construction equipment down the street seems to have a lot of talent but he creates noise which is really annoying.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Good Lord, in two weeks time we'll probably all have forgotten why DMB are so bad and hated! Perhaps a quickly-assembled print version of this thread should be made available.

Can this be the cover?

Sure, Nick & Buzz prolly won't mind. For awhile.

briania (briania), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds like a personal problem, Jon.

Allison (Allison), Thursday, 1 July 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd forgotten how goddamn awesome Alex in NYC was on this thread. I just laughed for a half hour.
