Jane's Addiction were seen as funk metal.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 01:01 (fifteen years ago)

Anyone else got any thoughts on todays albums?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 01:03 (fifteen years ago)

And tomorrow we will break into the top 100.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

I was sort of figuring that if not one, not two, but three Manic Street Preachers albums made it, then how much of a stretch is it for, say, the Red Hot Chili Peppers to make it?

Love seeing stuff like Yob and Earth up against Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

I'm glad someone likes it!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 01:32 (fifteen years ago)

Last weekend I listened to Manilla Road - Open The Gates and Goatsnake - Flower Of Disease for the first time. Both are more fun than bouncy tiggers, and will seek out more. I'm reminded that I need to hear more YOB, but at that moment it's feeling like more an obligation than compulsion. I slogged through the first three Manic Street Preachers albums, and while one in four tunes are decent, it still felt mostly like a chore and left me unmoved. I'll shelve for another try later. I'll also wait 'til I'm in the mood for YOB.

Monster Magnet were a little hokey, but also pretty awesome for their first few albums. I listened to them a ton back in the day, and were definitely a gateway to Hawkind. Seemingly unrelated, but I also listened to a lot of Mule in the 90s, and feel like they've been unfairly forgotten. Their live shows were such a satisfying balance of a thick groove and a bludgeoning, like a southern rockin (via Michigan) version of Jesus Lizard.

Animal Collective, etc. Joyless, musician-y deliberate seriousness at the expense of any color.

Not to get all indie defensive, but if anything, Animal Collective are one of the lone "indie" bands with a high profile to be bringing a sense of joy, color, etc. and unserious, playful, creative fun to the Pfork set.

Umm one of them was mine. TOO LOW.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 06:42 (fifteen years ago)

I finally got a chance to look this over. Bizarre results.

Major albums placing far lower than a lot of stuff that has no business on a list like this.

In what universe is Screaming for Vengeance not a top 100 metal album?

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 10:42 (fifteen years ago)

in a universe where Nirvana is a guaranteed top ten entry maybe?

ILM prides itself on bizarre results where lists look different to the same old lists everywhere else has.

some excellent albums to come

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 11:50 (fifteen years ago)

the next couple are a lot of fun too

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 11:50 (fifteen years ago)

heh, if these results had been the predictable same as everywhere else kind, there would be loads of moaning too. You cant win!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 11:58 (fifteen years ago)

so what do you all prefer, predictable same old metal/heavy rock lists or surprising ones?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 12:01 (fifteen years ago)

Loaded question! I like surprises, as long as I won't be surprised by, like, Kix or Celine Dion or something in the top 10. But I haven't seen Xhuxk around.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 12:18 (fifteen years ago)

lol, chuck didn't vote.

Okay, I've never heard this band before, but I'm listening to a youtube right now and it's pretty nice: gallopping classic metal with intelligible vocals. What the fuck at that album cover though? Is this some furry shit or what?

more lunacy and witchcraft! (kkvgz), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 12:32 (fifteen years ago)

Obvs with a name like the Lord Weird Slough Feg, it's gonna be kinda weird, I guess.

I love that album cover. Great album but not one of my votes. All my votes seem to be in the bottom half of this poll, heh.

Kix was in my top 10 but i've given up hope of seeing them in the poll, if they were gonna show up they would've by now

the tlwsf cover reminds me of Dalgoda so that's cool.

Quo riff just isn't a suitable vehicle for interplanetary exploration (Ioannis), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 13:27 (fifteen years ago)

unless you love more than 300 metal albums i don't see any point in stating that the results aren't exciting you all the time

dark twisted fanta girl (some dude), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 13:35 (fifteen years ago)

well the point is that people know your vital opinion that a specific album is boring to you, and then they can coo at your cool demeanor and you can go braid each other's hair

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 13:37 (fifteen years ago)

Just catching up with the list now. Nice to see Superunknown placing, I love it but I didn't vote for it. This thing was an either/or proposition for me so I went with metal over heavy rock - Superunknown isn't metal, but Badmotorfinger is, so that got my vote.

Other things I should have nominated/voted for but missed in my haste to cast a ballot: Deicide 'Legion'; Earth 2; Melvins 'Houdini'. I'm sure there's more.
