Holy Bible's the only Manics I have much time for.

just I feel like some really good records have come pretty low (Dissection, Lysol, Cryptopsy, Gorguts, Swans), so it makes me wonder what is to come. Hopefully more black metal. And Melvins. And Godflesh.

At the end of this though, I feel like I am going to have a lot of great new stuff to check, particularly at this end of the poll.

sunn O))) i don't think are metal, and although their music "sounds" heavy, the lack of riffage makes me think it shouldn't even be on this list. it isn't metal or hard rock it's just noise.

I think it's fair to say the list is nothing like what people expected (which means some have lots to complain about) but it's a good list.

They are definitely not Noise (with a big N) though, whatever else they may or may not be.

'just noise' is the lazy criticism blockheaded laymen aim at metal, so to use it about ANYTHING other than Noise is kinda unforgivable for a metal fan

The Holy Bible is a magnificent album, but I didn't feel quite right voting for it - it's heavy as all hell, but not at all a 'metal' thing. Gold Against The Soul I've become very fond of in that regard, but I don't expect it'll place.

Anyway, The Holy Bible is dense and uncomfortable and claustrophobic, befitting the £50-a-day studio they banged it out in, and at least half the tracks are really powerful musically. The lyrics are demented and horrible, as opposed to the demented and fun things they used to come up with, but for all that there's a poised beauty about the whole thing.

and looking up the track listing I only remember 4 songs from it, although I probably haven't heard it for 20+ years so that's not too bad.

btw do most death metallers still hate black metal or has that all changed now?

I'm intrigued by BM, but mostly it lacks enough groove for my tastes and I'm not really into lo-fi production. The stuff I like the most would probably be regarded as sell-out by purists.
