Expected Monoliths & Dimensions to be way higher. Not looking forward to the all Sabbath/Maiden top 20 tbh.
― ears are wounds, Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:34 (fifteen years ago)
not unhappy but M&D is a great album that I'd imagine a few metal folk are reticent to even hear let alone praise because O'Malley/Anderson have SULLIED THE METAL with AVANT SHIT

Are you going all the way to the top 20 tonight?
― Ismael Klata, Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:38 (fifteen years ago)
would strongly, strongly doubt that, in my non-kvlt naivety

Ha just because I am disappointed that the record is so low, doesn't mean I therefore think it should be a lock for no 1. Geez.

I'm taking it up to #151 tonight btw
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)
Holy Bible's the only Manics I have much time for.
― rhythm fixated member (chap), Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)
just I feel like some really good records have come pretty low (Dissection, Lysol, Cryptopsy, Gorguts, Swans), so it makes me wonder what is to come. Hopefully more black metal. And Melvins. And Godflesh.
At the end of this though, I feel like I am going to have a lot of great new stuff to check, particularly at this end of the poll.
― ears are wounds, Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:48 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, pretty stoked on the list so far
― underwater, please (bear, bear, bear), Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:50 (fifteen years ago)
death & thrash have outperformed BM so far, but kvltists dont vote on ilm.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:51 (fifteen years ago)
sunn O))) i don't think are metal, and although their music "sounds" heavy, the lack of riffage makes me think it shouldn't even be on this list. it isn't metal or hard rock it's just noise.
― GREAT GUY: (marc iv), Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:51 (fifteen years ago)
I think it's fair to say the list is nothing like what people expected (which means some have lots to complain about) but it's a good list.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:52 (fifteen years ago)
the lack of riffage
guh?
it's just noise.
guhhhhhhh

OTM, next time I have a couple of free hours I'm going to methodically check out lots of this stuff.
― rhythm fixated member (chap), Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:52 (fifteen years ago)
I beg to differ re: Sunn0))), but it isn't really a fun argument tbh.
― ears are wounds, Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:54 (fifteen years ago)
I beg to differ with *marc IV* that should have said
Monoliths & Dimensions won the ILM 2009 Metal Poll btw
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:55 (fifteen years ago)
I really can't get my head round noise rock.
― rhythm fixated member (chap), Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:55 (fifteen years ago)
that's because people without weird preconceived ideas about what metal is or should be voted in that one xp

HOW HE DOTH TROLL
― visit europe more (acoleuthic), Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:56 (fifteen years ago)
but seriously, 'just noise'?! fucking hell
They are definitely not Noise (with a big N) though, whatever else they may or may not be.
― ears are wounds, Sunday, 8 August 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)
'just noise' is the lazy criticism blockheaded laymen aim at metal, so to use it about ANYTHING other than Noise is kinda unforgivable for a metal fan
― visit europe more (acoleuthic), Sunday, 8 August 2010 22:02 (fifteen years ago)
LJ I think the track poll and the beginning of this one have proved there is on ILM standard wrt "weird preconceived ideas about what metal is or should be"

The Holy Bible is a magnificent album, but I didn't feel quite right voting for it - it's heavy as all hell, but not at all a 'metal' thing. Gold Against The Soul I've become very fond of in that regard, but I don't expect it'll place.
Anyway, The Holy Bible is dense and uncomfortable and claustrophobic, befitting the £50-a-day studio they banged it out in, and at least half the tracks are really powerful musically. The lyrics are demented and horrible, as opposed to the demented and fun things they used to come up with, but for all that there's a poised beauty about the whole thing.

and looking up the track listing I only remember 4 songs from it, although I probably haven't heard it for 20+ years so that's not too bad.
― A prog venn diagram for you to think about (Matt #2), Sunday, 8 August 2010 22:15 (fifteen years ago)
btw do most death metallers still hate black metal or has that all changed now?
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 8 August 2010 22:17 (fifteen years ago)
Does one album really need 2 songs about swordfighting?
(Powerslave that is)

I'm intrigued by BM, but mostly it lacks enough groove for my tastes and I'm not really into lo-fi production. The stuff I like the most would probably be regarded as sell-out by purists.
