First couple years in college I sort of lost track of metal cuz the 1988 albums by Iron Maiden and Metallica disappointed me. In 1990 I sat in on a friend's metal radio show and this Slayer album reawakened my inner metalhead. I went back to South Of Heaven and couldn't believe I slept on it. Top ten stuff for me.

Release in January, 1968, I might consider Vincebus Eruptum the first heavy rock album. Vanilla Fudge came out the previous year, but it's not nearly as heavy and wasn't included in the nomination list. Nor were Cream or Hendrix.

if your votes are all coming in now then I suppose you might be disappointed later, lol. So I guess noone wants their votes to place just yet!
btw who does everyone think will be in the top 10?
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 6 August 2010 23:05 (fifteen years ago)
probably a Maiden album (maybe Powerslave?), Reign in Blood I'd guess, Appetite for Destruction, um, a Mastodon album?
― Mordy, Friday, 6 August 2010 23:07 (fifteen years ago)
Meh I know certain things I voted for will likely place very high.
In the top ten?
Probably:Zeppelin IVParanoidsomething by Maiden and Priest...I'm not sure.

Worship were great, but "mad" max committed suicide after the first album, so anything after just isn't the same.

Well I think they're all great but more or less interchangeable.
― Without warning, a wizard walks by. (Viceroy), Friday, 6 August 2010 23:43 (fifteen years ago)
Venom - awesome, I prefer this one to Black Metal. For a band that were largely considered a complete joke at the time (by themselves too really) they sure as hell have been influential, I wonder what they think of the genres they spawned?
― A prog venn diagram for you to think about (Matt #2), Friday, 6 August 2010 23:43 (fifteen years ago)
this has Bloodlust and 1000 Days in Sodom on it but Black Metal has Black Metal and Countess Bathory AND Buried Alive.

Eddie works well actually. Whatever happened to Vic Rattlesnake?
its more sludge/doom but man they're great. One of my fave Grief albums didn't even get nominated :(
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 7 August 2010 00:02 (fifteen years ago)
yeah its very sludgy I think they were on like a thrash/punk label for most of their releases.
― Half crazed with glory, half crazed in the heat! (Viceroy), Saturday, 7 August 2010 00:03 (fifteen years ago)
I didn't even vote for Grief, they didn't survive the cull in my 250 album shortlist! So really pleased this placed.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 7 August 2010 00:04 (fifteen years ago)
Vic Rattlesnakehead is still around, although he's not very menacing anymore.
