From Enslavement is unbelievably low, however, see my assertion on the other thread that basically me and the good Colonel like grindcore and nobody else.

I guess the options for the guitar player joke are well covered in that thread!

Boston is not a bad album, but I'd have vetoed it had I noticed it in the nom thread. I mean, what next, Kansas? Styx? REO Speedwagon?

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 6 August 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

When I "graduated" from middle school, in 1981 in Texas, my parents asked me if there was something special I wanted as a congratulatory present. There was: the then-imminent third Boston album.

They did, indeed, buy it for me. In Boston, in the fall of my sophomore year of college, when it finally came out...

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 6 August 2010 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

I think Boston just about count as heavy rock, as does early REO Speedwagon in fact. Why? RIFFS.

Swans may well be actually the heaviest band on this list.

WTF Children of God down here. So much for me thinking my albums looked like they would do well.

xp to Aldo I like a bit of grindcore too, and voted for Scum in this poll.

yeah, i like grind (death and black) metal, too. i just like late-'60s - mid-'80s metal more.

PS like that Ufomammut record, their new one's dead good too.

Neil S, Friday, 6 August 2010 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

I would say anybody looking into grindcore needs the first two Carcass albums, In Battle There Is No Law by Bolt Thrower, the Earache sampler Grindcrusher, at least one Pig Destroyer (Prowler In The Yard certainly) the latest Cattle Decapitator record and selective picking in the Anal Cunt catalogue. Also consider Heresy, Doom and Amebix for Crust goodness, although some of this might get too far into D-beat for you. SOB from Japan provide a really good link back into hardcore. Grindcore Madness At The BBC is essential.

First couple years in college I sort of lost track of metal cuz the 1988 albums by Iron Maiden and Metallica disappointed me. In 1990 I sat in on a friend's metal radio show and this Slayer album reawakened my inner metalhead. I went back to South Of Heaven and couldn't believe I slept on it. Top ten stuff for me.

Release in January, 1968, I might consider Vincebus Eruptum the first heavy rock album. Vanilla Fudge came out the previous year, but it's not nearly as heavy and wasn't included in the nomination list. Nor were Cream or Hendrix.

btw who does everyone think will be in the top 10?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 6 August 2010 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

probably a Maiden album (maybe Powerslave?), Reign in Blood I'd guess, Appetite for Destruction, um, a Mastodon album?

Mordy, Friday, 6 August 2010 23:07 (fifteen years ago)

Meh I know certain things I voted for will likely place very high.

In the top ten?

Probably:
Zeppelin IV
Paranoid
something by Maiden and Priest...
I'm not sure.
