"no-one will never know what #56 was"

Come on Herm. If Negasonic Teenage Warhead charts, I bet the anti-Monster Magnet talk will cease.

Victim of Changes is a good Sabbathian tune. Halford really hit the helium for this one.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

Henry ate #56

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

OMG OMG this is an xpost I am so excited OMG OMG. Anyway, scheduled update on youtubes:

Boston – More Than a Feeling: Aaaargh no. Please, no. The handclaps, they taunt me. I preferred it when I used to imagine the title being sung to the tune of ‘More Than a Woman’. I’m not sure I’m going to be able to stick this one out. Well, after the insipidness of this, at least we get...

Iron Maiden – Number of the Beast: Hahahaha! I don’t really like this, but at least it is fun, and a million times better than Boston. This is what I always think of when ‘metal’ is mentioned, by the way. Great video, too.

Jane’s Addiction – Mountain Song: Is it okay to just say ‘yawn’ and move on? Bland.

Witchfinder General – Burning a Sinner: I liked the last one by these guys, so I have some hope for this. And yeah, it’s pretty good. Feels like it drags a bit more, maybe? Or possibly I just need another coffee. And a bit more soloing in the middle, too. I like the chorus, though, we need more incantatory witchiness here. Also, are all of their songs thematically linked to their name? Are they a proper concept band?

Dio – Holy Diver: This is taking its time to get going. An even longer intro than Danzig’s one. And oh god, I hate it from the first ‘mmmmm-hmmmm’. Oh no, hang on, I actually know this one. And yeah, I don’t like it. But the video is pretty funny, and makes the song infinitely more bearable.

Melvins – Boris: Boredom hits me twenty seconds in, and there’s another eight minutes to go. FFS, why do all my friends like these guys? I AM SO BORED. It’s not like they’re doing anything clever or interesting with the form here, this is just unadulterated tedium. ARRRRGH. I actually can't finish this one. Can I go and listen to ‘Number of the Beast’ again, please?

I dunno if he likes black metal, henry do you like black metal?

― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, August 4, 2010 3:59 PM (2 minutes ago)

Yes but only the trv kvlt stuff, not this poser stuff that gets actually released and distributed.

Henry Kvlt Pvp, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

EVERYBODY WHO VOTED FOR CALEDONIA, I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU. You have all made my day. Thank you, guys.

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

was my #5

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

Because this made the list, I hope emil.y promises to hang around and post on the albums thread.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

If its black metal, fuck it, dont bother posting it.

Not familiar with that Caledonia song, its pretty good.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:14 (fifteen years ago)

it was a joke bill. Caledonia has proto-black metal vox

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

I'll be on the albums thread, sure, but probably won't be posting as much, as it's tougher to respond to whole albums that you haven't heard before than single songs.

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:17 (fifteen years ago)

you can live blog the album covers then!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:18 (fifteen years ago)

did you expect Caledonia to place?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:19 (fifteen years ago)

whoa that cromagnon song is A+++++, how have i not heard that before

CHEESECAKE VOTING FRUIT HATING SCUM (jjjusten), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:19 (fifteen years ago)

I certainly wasn't expecting it to get higher than about 70, so that came as a total surprise. Although squealing like a schoolgirl with delight is probably not a very metal response to it placing, is it?

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

is the whole cromagnon album that insane and awesome?

CHEESECAKE VOTING FRUIT HATING SCUM (jjjusten), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

The rest of the album is possibly more insane, but it turns into less of a song-based album and more of a torture chamber sound effects album. Which I think is awesome, but your mileage might vary.

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, pretty much exactly like an *actual* sound effects album, not using that figuratively or anything. It's very strange.

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

I think you might like it, though.

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

yeah nurse with wound is still my top last.fm artist i think so i should probably go obtain this right about now

CHEESECAKE VOTING FRUIT HATING SCUM (jjjusten), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:29 (fifteen years ago)

its nothing like caledonia. highly experimental.

Quo riff just isn't a suitable vehicle for interplanetary exploration (Ioannis), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

Was there ever any doubt Led Zep wouldn't make it ffs? a metal poll without sabbath/zep is like a poll without beatles/stones, aint gonna happen.

I voted for dazed & confused btw.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

kkvgz, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:05 (fifteen years ago)

Someone should call the ASPCA because this band looks like they are being badly underfed by their owners

Henry Kvlt Pvp, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

Henry did you enjoy your steak at the vets yesterday?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

The only thing that is worse than flase metal is FALSE STEAK.

Henry Kvlt Pvp, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

Back to the grindstone:

Burzum – Det Som En Gang Var: Well, I don’t want to like this, but I’m gonna give it a fair go and try to disconnect it from its creator. The intro is kind of pleasant, sort of neo-classical new agey? Goes on a bit, though. When the song finally kicks in, it’s nothing spectacular, fairly average. Ends up sounding a bit like a soundtrack for some horror film, perhaps? Not bad, but I can’t quite work out why people go nuts for this. (Also, hopefully not incurring the wrath of any deranged fans, it sounds a bit wimpy, don’t you think?)

Public Enemy – She Watch Channel Zero: And yeah, this couldn’t have come at a better time. Absolutely awesome. I ended up not really knocking this down my ballot much, as I think it is a justifiable track for inclusion in this poll. Again, it’s more rocking than the bloody Manics song that got on.

Venom – Black Metal: I think if someone put this on at a party, I would find it hideously annoying, but I have become so inured by listening to this list that I currently think it’s alright. But I dunno, I guess it has something to do with how you’re supposed to respond to this stuff – do metal fans take it seriously, or is it okay to like it because you’re amused by it? Also, I note that Herr Neuname called them ‘lo-fi’ metal – this is probably part of the reason why I don’t mind it. If it was slicker I think it’d piss me off more.

Slayer – Raining Blood: I still hate Slayer. Also, they ruin Guitar Hero for me. Next.

Iron Maiden – Iron Maiden: This one doesn’t do anything for me. Lack of video means there’s nothing to even laugh at.

Kyuss – Supa Scoopa & Mighty Scoop: Oh god, CRINGE-MAKING intro. The main body of the song is a bit better but it’s still kind of embarrassing. Again, I know loads of people who love this – why? It’s really unimaginative. At least it’s not as boring as that Melvins track, but it replaces that with sounding like the inspiration for some of the worst grunge-associated rock pants. I do quite like the long drawn-out way it ends, though.

Mastodon – March of the Fire Ants: Serious metal is serious? Uh, not my thing.

52 Entombed · Left Hand Path (1990) (359 points · 9 voters)

I sang a bunch of death metal last week, but only because I was throwing up a sock that I decided to eat.

Henry Kvlt Pvp, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

Three of my votes in a row there, and all 10+ minutes

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

Dude! What! YES!

kkvgz, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

Death metal has been notably light in this poll, but here's to another of my top 5 placing.
