I like Deeper Than Rap better than Teflon Don. I feel like the new one is too ambitious. Peter Principle in action, kinda; on DTR he got as good as he's ever gonna be and had exactly the kind of lush yacht-rap beats he needs. Only "Super High" really maintains that level of lushness.

i heard what i presume to be teflon don booming from someone's car today and it sounded awesome which reminds me i need to hear teflon don
― ballerrr (The Reverend), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 07:31 (thirteen years ago) link
if anything, 'deeper than rap' felt like an event record mostly because of his beef with 50
i think the hype surrounding 'teflon don' was borne solely out of the realization that the dude could actually rap

did anyone actually care about his beef w/ fiddy?
― ballerrr (The Reverend), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 08:32 (thirteen years ago) link
rap fans always care about beefs, no matter how inconsequential, cynical or half-hearted

This actually happens? I hear these people too but no matter what's playing, they generally sound like fucking idiots doing it.

also missing in discussion is the return of the legit street banger as a semi-crossover hit. when was the last time street track that was rap's song of the summer
all the fluffy prod. and the "out of step with current moment" Robb Report mythologizing ignores the fact that BMF was CRAB MEATS this summer
― surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 14:40 (thirteen years ago) link
THAT REVIEW DOESN'T EVEN MENTION "B.M.F."
― surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 14:53 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah that is true -- the whole talking about point about ross's extravagant beats is really more pertinent to the last album
teflon don is better in part because there are joints like "mc hammer" an "bmf" and the opener to balance everything out
― righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:40 (thirteen years ago) link
Beamer, Benz or Bently?
― I think I'm Princess Peach... King Koopa (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:44 (thirteen years ago) link
i wouldn't necessarily call "BMF" at street hit in the sense that it's a rick ross song... there was always some level of built in advantages -- it's certainly not on the same wavelength in that regard as "o let's do it" or "wasted" or any dance snap thing
really i think it served more of a purpose of reminding ross's people that no one really wants to hear him doing shit like "super high" or "magnificent" -- people still want "hustlin" type joints from him (exception being the one w/ nelly that was a hit)
― righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:44 (thirteen years ago) link
It was "Super High" that sold this for me though.

yeah Ross is weird, came into the game with a dark anthemic banger, even his T-Pain joint wasn't very R&B, but then suddenly he decides every song needs some soft hands soul singer on the hook.
― The chickbad from the ludicrous 'ludacris' song (some dude), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:22 (thirteen years ago) link
Not to take anything away from him, because he's put out some very good albums, but how much of Rick Ross' appeal is that he's filling the void left behind by Biggie? It's a comparison Ross seems to court more aggressively than ever on Teflon Don, which is peppered with Biggie references.
― Evan R, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:36 (thirteen years ago) link
not that weird a progression really
xpost

like zero percent?

He fills the Biggie void cuz he's fat, black, and a hedonist?
― Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:38 (thirteen years ago) link
I hear only the most superficial of similarities.
― Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:39 (thirteen years ago) link
pretty sure voids get filled quicker than a decade
― da croupier, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:39 (thirteen years ago) link
People desperately needing to fill the Biggie void definitely accounts for the wild commercial success of Shyne and Guerilla Black

― righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:49 (thirteen years ago) link
sonically speaking i can see how the "maybach music" type beats harken back to that super expensive, glitzy 'life after death', but in any other sense, no
― righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:52 (thirteen years ago) link
It's not just a physical comparison; though. His halting, booming flow seems to get more Biggie-esque with each album, and he (and his guests) make several explicit references to Biggie on Teflon Don. It seems to be a comparison that he actively courts.
― Evan R, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 20:22 (thirteen years ago) link
well of course HE does, but that doesn't make it right
he's also an ex-corrections officer turned major label rapper who is actively courting a comparison to one of the most notorious cocaine dealers in recent history, so you know...
― righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 20:24 (thirteen years ago) link
