i'm kind of surprised at how many people hate live music! i'm not huge on it but it's pretty integral to my life as a music fan.

i would not go to this or any atp festival, though the bloc festival in the same venue as the uk atps was fab this year.

check the vaguely condescending review of Lilith Fair in recent NY Times for uhm perspective on folk festivals

whiney's actually right to max out on this as much as he can imo - I can guarantee that within the next five or six years he will notice that standing for six or seven bands in a row is at the very least a little less do-able than it used to be. but even in a comfortable seat, I just don't want to see a program longer than two hours; after that I'm not listening so much as hearing. quality of experience > quantity of experience for me. anybody who is legitimately able to do both, more power. I'm one of those guys who thinks albums are also way too long now & thought the age of the four-song EP was a time of true glory

just skimming this thread & there's some rad points about live music being an unenjoyable experience, but, this festival is $$$$$$. i went to the last two and they were super enjoyable and crammed with life-affirming musical moments and all but, really, 'why aren't you going' can not be asked aggressively when everything adds up to like $500.

yeah live music can be unenjoyable but you soon learn to sidestep the discomfort in most places. avoid the worst venues, stand in the less crowded places and forgo the best sightlines...whichever.

festivals which involve camping are actual hell and i don't know why anyone would put themselves through that, but then i think that about any camping anywhere. you need comfortable recovery space to enjoy festivals.

I've already been to a couple of ATPs and have seen a sizable majority of the bands playing this one. I really want to see the Scientists, but would rather see them play a full set somewhere on a dedicated bill.

I am going, but I've had a hard time persuading people I know to go this year. The poor state of the economy is definitely a factor - ATP is expensive, and I know plenty of people who've lost work or are facing a less than certain future career-wise at present. Laying down $500 or so for a music festival isn't the wisest move in those circumstances.

Also, as mentioned on the other thread, I think there is some disappointment that Jarmusch hasn't really pulled anything surprising/spectacular out of the bag. Considering who he's worked with in the music world in the past, I think folks were hoping for a bit more from him. Still, there is some time left...

i'm going to the gybe ATP in December and a little worried about how well i'll hold up - i stopped going to gigs mostly because I had this little Whiney-esque voice inside telling me that OBVIOUSLY i had to be LOVING this because it was AMAZING and this was what LOVING MUSIC was about, and it was so exhausting to be constantly feeling like i was meant to be having an intense spiritual experience and losing myself in the music etc etc etc, when actually i what i was mostly feeling was bored/foot-achey. I have been to ATPs before and had an awesome time, but it was q a bit more about the people I was with than the music in and of itself.

i mean, i am excited about seeing some bands i have not seen for 5-10 years! and some other ones i have only heard of! and hanging out w/ friends! but there's also the v distinct possibility that i'll just get grumpy and bored from all the standing still, wearing earplugs, and not having transcendental experiences.

i really want to go to the GYBE one in December but everyone in this thread is kind of making me feel like a loser

dunno, i would probably consider going to something like this is I lived in the area. I don't really go to festivals, but the indoor/smaller aspect of this makes it pretty appealing. and whatevs, the bill is amazing. I can see getting burned out on loud/live music, but I can also see it being fun. how much do tickets cost anyway? $$$ would probably be the thing keeping me from going.

dude maybe you are into telling people what they do or don't have to do if they actually love music but imo if you would enjoy a festival & seein bands all day & all night you should 100% go! and have fun! it is awesome that your partner is into doin that too - I'm just sayin that the ability to tolerate whose unstinting days musical stimulation is not a yardstick for measuring how much a person loves music: not that a person for whom that sounds awesome loves music any less than the person who thinks "I like mine in smaller doses"

Whiney I think you're the last over-25 standing who actually wants to see that many bands in a day no matter what bands they are

attending the Matt Groening UK ATP this year (that's a good excuse for not going to this one, yeah?) was my realisation that I am no longer as spry as I was in my teen years. Worth the back and shoulder pain, but still, OUCH.

^^^^ sorely overlooked deeply truthful post. this is a shitty feeling and although not necessarily a byproduct of going to festivals, is def linked to the process of listening to music/being stimulated too often/for too long. like sometimes when i get a day off from work or school i'm all "i'm gonna hang out and listen to records ALL DAY" but eventually you're just really sick of everything.

i'm young and would probably go to 5 shows a week if i could but i have never really seen a festival lineup and deeply moved enough to do it. this year's dna fest is maybe the closest so far, but then again like ugh a whole day of noisy garage bands? warped tour when i was like 13 ~ 14 was definitely some of the most fun shit of all time though. whiney i am infinitely jealous of you if you have as much fun at atp 2010 as i did as a kid at warped tour but it's probably impossible and would be possibly really embarassing
