haha too easy
― iatee, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:04 (fifteen years ago)
not on the evidence of some of the "classic albums" being performed, all you need is something 100 ppl will stan for
I got that

I would maybe pay to see Oneida do all of Steel Rod EP live, but I doubt that'll ever happen.
― xhuxk, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:05 (fifteen years ago)
oh man, reminds me of when I went to see maiden a few years ago, fucking dickinson is back, it's gonna be awesome, getting ready for a night of aces high and powerslave and killers, and then they come out and say "as a special treat...we are going to be performing the entirety of our new album, dance of death!!"
oh my god that fucking sucked
― dyao, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:05 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, I'm totally against the play-the-album thing and have been since the get-go. I've only been to two shows where a band played a whole album, and in one case I didn't know it because it was tech-death band The Faceless playing their new album Planetary Duality front to back and I wasn't familiar enough with the record yet to know it. The other one was Mastodon doing Crack the Skye.
― Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)
Pretty sure I did see Steel Rod live a couple of times, but a lot of the Oneida shows blur together. Saw them a lot in the 2000-2003 era somehow.
― grandavis, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:07 (fifteen years ago)
yeah man i mean in any world where isis (who i like okay, don't get me wrong) are "performing their classic 'oceanic' in full" we've scaled back the requirements considerably.

life.
― strongohulkingtonsghost, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:09 (fifteen years ago)
cuz when you're over thirty you realize other shit is just as important, like air conditioning, hanging out with your partner, and reading.
― Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:09 (fifteen years ago)
just curious!
― markers, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:09 (fifteen years ago)
ESPECIALLY air conditioning
The only bands on the ATP bill that I actively like are Sonic Youth, Tortoise, the Books, Papa M, and Dungen. I've seen the first two at least a half-dozen times each, so they're not necessarily draws for me. I'd like to see the other three, but I'm not sure going to a big festival just for those bands would be worthwhile.
Btw, I've gone to Pitchfork Fest every year since it began, and I think I enjoy myself a little less each time.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)
I still keep threatening to campaign for a re-do of aero & strongo's MDF 2007 beerdurance test but that may have been a last hurrah as far as those things go for me

I'm going to atp WITH my partner. i don't know why it has to be mutually exclusive, Soto

??? is that a name of a band or does it mean you can actually play poker with Albini? If so, that sounds so awesome, I bet he plays like a bad mfker and he's only into it to screw some cash from hipsters
He finished 14th in this year's World Series of Poker.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:14 (fifteen years ago)
haha i am even less likely to do mdf now because i have no apartment to go back to when it starts feeling like an abbatoir at full production inside sonar.
though apparently they are doing more sets outside now. even if i'm not quite sure eyehategod can be appreciated in daylight.
― strongohulkingtonsghost, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:14 (fifteen years ago)
EHG outside is like staging bilbo and gollum's riddle game at the Santa Anita pavilion

is she going to hang out till the end, without air conditioning?
(never dated anyone who likes music, books, etc as much as I do, btw)
― Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)
ATP is very air-conditioned in every room
― markers welby, S.B. (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:21 (fifteen years ago)
I suppose this point needs further clarification, but everything at ATP is indoors and air conditioned.
― MFB, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:21 (fifteen years ago)
given the level of music nerdage here, the atp lineup is prolly as exciting as the newport folk festival lineup. can you believe it?? edward sharpe! calexico! john prine! all in one place at one time!
― (e_3) (Edward III), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

i'm kind of surprised at how many people hate live music! i'm not huge on it but it's pretty integral to my life as a music fan.
i would not go to this or any atp festival, though the bloc festival in the same venue as the uk atps was fab this year.

check the vaguely condescending review of Lilith Fair in recent NY Times for uhm perspective on folk festivals
― sexual intercourse began in 1963 (m coleman), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:25 (fifteen years ago)
whiney's actually right to max out on this as much as he can imo - I can guarantee that within the next five or six years he will notice that standing for six or seven bands in a row is at the very least a little less do-able than it used to be. but even in a comfortable seat, I just don't want to see a program longer than two hours; after that I'm not listening so much as hearing. quality of experience > quantity of experience for me. anybody who is legitimately able to do both, more power. I'm one of those guys who thinks albums are also way too long now & thought the age of the four-song EP was a time of true glory
― gross rainbow of haerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:28 (fifteen years ago)
seriously I think widespread use of LSD in the late 60s was how this whole concert-as-endurance-test festival meme got started
― sexual intercourse began in 1963 (m coleman), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

― markers, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:31 (fifteen years ago)
just skimming this thread & there's some rad points about live music being an unenjoyable experience, but, this festival is $$$$$$. i went to the last two and they were super enjoyable and crammed with life-affirming musical moments and all but, really, 'why aren't you going' can not be asked aggressively when everything adds up to like $500.

imagining air conditioning opening for john prine
― (e_3) (Edward III), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:31 (fifteen years ago)
jaymc, that was just one of the 57+ tournaments in the WSOP. The Main Event, #57, is the big one that gets shown on ESPN. Still, any WSOP cash is a good showing.
― My totem animal is a hamburger. (WmC), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:33 (fifteen years ago)
maybe next year atp can get air conditioning to perform john prine's s/t debut in its entirety
― (e_3) (Edward III), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:34 (fifteen years ago)
yeah live music can be unenjoyable but you soon learn to sidestep the discomfort in most places. avoid the worst venues, stand in the less crowded places and forgo the best sightlines...whichever.
festivals which involve camping are actual hell and i don't know why anyone would put themselves through that, but then i think that about any camping anywhere. you need comfortable recovery space to enjoy festivals.

I've already been to a couple of ATPs and have seen a sizable majority of the bands playing this one. I really want to see the Scientists, but would rather see them play a full set somewhere on a dedicated bill.
― Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:45 (fifteen years ago)
I am going, but I've had a hard time persuading people I know to go this year. The poor state of the economy is definitely a factor - ATP is expensive, and I know plenty of people who've lost work or are facing a less than certain future career-wise at present. Laying down $500 or so for a music festival isn't the wisest move in those circumstances.
Also, as mentioned on the other thread, I think there is some disappointment that Jarmusch hasn't really pulled anything surprising/spectacular out of the bag. Considering who he's worked with in the music world in the past, I think folks were hoping for a bit more from him. Still, there is some time left...
― Position Position, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 18:19 (fifteen years ago)
i'm going to the gybe ATP in December and a little worried about how well i'll hold up - i stopped going to gigs mostly because I had this little Whiney-esque voice inside telling me that OBVIOUSLY i had to be LOVING this because it was AMAZING and this was what LOVING MUSIC was about, and it was so exhausting to be constantly feeling like i was meant to be having an intense spiritual experience and losing myself in the music etc etc etc, when actually i what i was mostly feeling was bored/foot-achey. I have been to ATPs before and had an awesome time, but it was q a bit more about the people I was with than the music in and of itself.
i mean, i am excited about seeing some bands i have not seen for 5-10 years! and some other ones i have only heard of! and hanging out w/ friends! but there's also the v distinct possibility that i'll just get grumpy and bored from all the standing still, wearing earplugs, and not having transcendental experiences.
