teflon don > trilla > deeper than rap

neither of the first two felt like an EVENT like 'teflon don' did tho

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

cuz HE'S BIG MEECH

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 16:11 (fifteen years ago)

And he gave Arcade Fire thumbs up yesterday, which was a bigger surprise.

I love this album but not on Ian's terms.

not really, he likes a lot of bedwetter rock, i only read his rap reviews most of the time.

The chickbad from the ludicrous 'ludacris' song (some dude), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

so is this guy like the dave edmunds of rap douchebaggery or something? that review seems to suggest we should be glad he's grown into the '90s or something

da croupier, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

"last of a dying breed" just like the blasters!

da croupier, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 19:05 (fifteen years ago)

no i think that would be jeff weiss

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

but ian's pretty close

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

"people would rather miss out on new rap royalty than admit this is about as good as mainstream macho rap gets these days"

da croupier, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

The beats on this are so diirrrrrrrty <3 x 1000000

I think one thing ppl are missing in the race to be "OMG HES MC HAMMER MEECH LOL FUCKK HAHAH" is that a lot of his flows actually kind of sound like "Lets Get It Started"/"Ring Em" hammer circa 1988

deeper than rap is way better than the other two! and was way more of an EVENT too, when that first joint dropped where hes all 'whistling at wendy williams' or whatever thats when everyone was all "whoa...dude can rap." This record doesnt feel like much of an EVENT at all in comparison

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

Pfork did a 180 this morning, after giving low marks to the first two Ross albums and not even bothering with the third:

yeah i didnt wanna bat for it what with viewing from a distance but that's how the event status seemed to me too

agree about deeper than rap anyways

r|t|c, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 00:26 (fifteen years ago)

although its not like dtr is a great record ether so whatevs

r|t|c, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 00:28 (fifteen years ago)

so what is it then?

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

average - all of ross' albums are shades of average

r|t|c, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 00:30 (fifteen years ago)

its an inconsistent one for sure. but ... 'yacht club'

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 00:31 (fifteen years ago)

I like Deeper Than Rap better than Teflon Don. I feel like the new one is too ambitious. Peter Principle in action, kinda; on DTR he got as good as he's ever gonna be and had exactly the kind of lush yacht-rap beats he needs. Only "Super High" really maintains that level of lushness.

Thanks, I know, it's called paraphrasing. You sound like the guy from PitchforkReviewsReviews.

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 06:17 (fifteen years ago)

Oh for fuck's sake let's not get into this again, I KNOW THE REVIEWS ARE WRITTEN BY DIFF AUTHORS

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 06:46 (fifteen years ago)

i heard what i presume to be teflon don booming from someone's car today and it sounded awesome which reminds me i need to hear teflon don

ballerrr (The Reverend), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 07:31 (fifteen years ago)

if anything, 'deeper than rap' felt like an event record mostly because of his beef with 50

i think the hype surrounding 'teflon don' was borne solely out of the realization that the dude could actually rap

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 08:19 (fifteen years ago)

did anyone actually care about his beef w/ fiddy?

ballerrr (The Reverend), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 08:32 (fifteen years ago)

rap fans always care about beefs, no matter how inconsequential, cynical or half-hearted

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 08:36 (fifteen years ago)

*smh at rap fans*

ballerrr (The Reverend), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 08:56 (fifteen years ago)

i heard ________________ booming from someone's car today and it sounded awesome

This actually happens? I hear these people too but no matter what's playing, they generally sound like fucking idiots doing it.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 11:58 (fifteen years ago)

just sayin, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 12:03 (fifteen years ago)

Man I wish just once I heard someone blasting the ICP blowjob sketch that summer every car seemed to be playing the Marshall Mathers LP in my hometown.

also missing in discussion is the return of the legit street banger as a semi-crossover hit. when was the last time street track that was rap's song of the summer

all the fluffy prod. and the "out of step with current moment" Robb Report mythologizing ignores the fact that BMF was CRAB MEATS this summer

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 14:40 (fifteen years ago)

THAT REVIEW DOESN'T EVEN MENTION "B.M.F."

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

yeah that is true -- the whole talking about point about ross's extravagant beats is really more pertinent to the last album

teflon don is better in part because there are joints like "mc hammer" an "bmf" and the opener to balance everything out

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

Beamer, Benz or Bently?

I think I'm Princess Peach... King Koopa (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

i wouldn't necessarily call "BMF" at street hit in the sense that it's a rick ross song... there was always some level of built in advantages -- it's certainly not on the same wavelength in that regard as "o let's do it" or "wasted" or any dance snap thing

really i think it served more of a purpose of reminding ross's people that no one really wants to hear him doing shit like "super high" or "magnificent" -- people still want "hustlin" type joints from him (exception being the one w/ nelly that was a hit)

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

It was "Super High" that sold this for me though.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

some1 pls post funny Rick Ross corections officer pic

San Te, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

san te, check the other rick ross thread, there's tons of them

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:05 (fifteen years ago)

"super high" is really limp to me, the remix is amazing tho
